Funny you should say that. I'd just thought to myself "He probably doesn't give a flying f what the Beeb do; think about the world wide advertising income". So, "screw everyone" is the order of the day.

I think what he is losing out from revenue from advertisers, he is making up from companies willing to make it PPV.

 

Italy and Canada have the short end of the stick as it will literally PPV (something like £5 per race - which includes practice, qualifying and race). Atleast if you get Sky Sports over here you get a decent package that shows a fair bit of sport (Racing, Golf, Rugby, Football, Ice Hockey, Fighting)

If you cast your mind back a few years when Sky had a total monopoly of Premiership football they hived off twenty or so matches a year to a "Premium" package which was an extra £50 or so a year, or something like £5.95 a match if you didn't want the whole bang shoot. It wasn't until Setanta, and latterly ESPN entered the bidding that this package disappeared in order that Sky could remain competitive. They [sky] have almost always taken the long term view with their investments, and whilst you may pick up practice, qualifying (surely they've already qualified as they are there?) and the race today, the day after tomorrow may may be another story. I don't really know that much of Mr. Ecclestone to pass comment on the gentleman.

If they wanted to sponsor F1, they'd have already done so, at a premium.

So like Santander want their name on the front and back wings of a Ferrari. That's worth something like £40m -£50m to the team per year. (How much they actually pay I have no idea).

It goes PPV. Santander pull out because they're not going to make that large an investment on something that won't be seen by anywhere near as many people.

Do you think anyone else would make the same sort of commitment to an F1 team for very limited showing?

I'd guess you could probably look at halfing the figure of that worth to 20mil. Do that across the board for your sponsors and that's a LOT of money lost for the team. I know they want to cut costs in F1 but that's frankly silly.

I notice how the Beeb skated over this area when they did the F1 in the new stuff today they said its been in the news lots and went over to the VT of what has occurred this week and never mentioned it again. It would have been interesting to hear some views on this from people in the paddock. If the deal had been done for the British F1 that would have been very interesting views I bet!

Practically every F1 team in some shape or form (be it from free phone contracts to the drivers to full blown sponsorships on the cars)

The drivers are getting annoyed at it also as it means less money for their teams, which means less money on developments and wages, which means less enthusiasm for the sport.

Bloody BBC - pathetic. RTL feed looks like the best bet for me next year for a free feed. Just been looking and dual LNB dishes are quite common now.

If you get the right equipment you can have English commentaries on RTL as they have a service like the red button which allows English (for the English speaking troops based over there), German and Lower German (as used in south Germany, Austria and Switzerland)

Well if that's the case then even better - I was going to install my own dish etc and then use the 5 live commentary but if there is English already available I'll go for that. Not sure what else is avilable on the astra 13e satellite but this is the way to go and stick it to the Murdoch's.....

I have a Humax HD1000, it is expensive though. It is easy to use and has a favourites thing like my sky HD box. If you plan on using "Premiere" make sure your box has the "für Premiere geeignet" logo on it and will accept the new version of the cards (they can be a pain to get a hold of though). Sadly according to Oma the "red button" type feature doesnt work for her when she goes camping in Austria, and we couldnt get it working here, Michael spent ages trying to get it to work so its doubtful it will work, but the daft thing is as soon as you are in German borders it works, must be something to do with broadcasting or something. If you want to have English voiceovers then the best you can do I suppose is tune the radio and mute the TV, but it wont be the same.

Did anyone else notice what Mark Webber said on the grid? I can't remember what it was exactly but he made a comment that I took to be related to the Sky and F1 deal.

There were quite a few sly comments over the weekend, including Martin Brundle making some comment about some drivers being behind them in the queue at the job centre at the end of the year!

Sky have been after F1 for many years, now....

 

Look at their foray into the A1GP circuit? That has pretty much been a failure, as there was so little interest. The idea of countries battling it out SHOULD have caught on....but it is just a sideshow now.

 

Apparently, Sky HAVE announced that there will be NO adverts during race time, but can you really see them sticking to that?

 

I will ONLY watch the highlights on the Beeb, as I will never go back to being a SKY customer. Watching the destruction of football, via huge sums of money, has put me off Sky, and even though my beloved QPR are back in the Prem, I will still stay away from them. I can find live feeds for games, and I will do the same for F1.

 

As for Mr Ecclestone......Don't get me started! As a shareholder in the aforementioned love of my life, I have enough reason to hate him, without his merciless chasing of the cash in F1!!!
