CESIL Posted August 1, 2011 Posted August 1, 2011 I wouldn't mind PPV if I could do just that...pay and then watch the race... ...but instead I have to commit to a subscription to a service that I will rarely use and cannot really afford. If I could pay on the day and then watch the race (online would be fine, my computer will attach to the TV) then that would be much better and certainly cheaper than going to the track!

Buy a six pack, and it'll STILL be cheaper than the pub! Plus, you won't have to put up with that F1 bore, who will know all the stats, but have none of the personality!!

mthomas08 Posted August 1, 2011 Posted August 1, 2011 Just been keeping an eye out on PF1, plus they did mention at the weekend that BBC was going to lose F1 for good, at least this way we still get 10 races a year but as long as Brundle/Coultard and Co are still about because I think they have been fantastic. It does really look like it came down to money, BBC lost it to ITV as a result of Money and Bernie is pure business man (Couldnt care less about anything else) and again BBC lose out because of money. The fact you got Jake who is a very hard worker and a very good presenter (Plus his personality shows) and you have Eddie and David - Ex Team Boss and Ex Driver who may not always agree but again their personality shows and of course Brundle and Coultard again Two Ex Drivers who have a lot of experience in F1 and are fantastic together. It shows on screen and to me gives us a much more Fun feel to F1, they clash at times but its so much fun. You got their opinions showing as well, remember last season when Petrov kept Alonso at bay - Alonso reacted with a hand in the air - Brundle said "Get real son". In the end the fans are going to suffer.

Italy and Canada have the short end of the stick as it will literally PPV (something like £5 per race - which includes practice, qualifying and race). Atleast if you get Sky Sports over here you get a decent package that shows a fair bit of sport (Racing, Golf, Rugby, Football, Ice Hockey, Fighting) I'd prefer to pay £5 per race = £95 Basic sky package with sky sports = £36 a month But I don't have a home phone so that'll be another £11 a month Like the football, it just means i'm watching it on the internet. Sky aren't getting any of my money.

This £5 per race is on top of their pre existing sports package with their TV Broadcasters of which they pay a premium...its the equivalent of having to have Sky sports then pay for the sky box office events on top for every race (and you need the sports package to gain access to their PPV stuff)

jinnantonnixx Posted August 2, 2011 Posted August 2, 2011 (edited) I had an old Comag sat receiver (£40 from Lidl) and got RTL, but by mistake. I tuned the dish into the wrong sat, the signal meter only shows the strength, not the satellite ID! Anyway, I was in B&Q the other week and they were flogging complete sat kits (receiver, dish and accessories - standard def only) for £29. The dishes get a bit rusty after a couple of years, but F1 fans could do worse than slip down their local B&Q and see if they have any. I've installed a couple of dishes for friends and family, it's not difficult. 'Satcure' is a good site for advice. Be sure to look up 'skew' - this is important to get a good signal. Interesting bit from Alan Sugar's autobiography - he was buying satellite dishes from the manufacturer for £1 each. Another option: Buy a portable satellite system, this will pack into a suitcase. They're designed for camping. Keep it in the briefcase, and wheel it out when needed. Put this dish in the garden, connect the telly and you're in business. You can get 'F' connector flat sections for running the coax in through a closed window or door. Do a search for 'camping satellite kit' and loads come back for well under £100. I find the whole thing insane to be honest, people are targeting the BBC yet seem to ignore that the BBC have no choice but to cut back since the license fee has been frozen for 6 years and they are also now forced to fund the world service (It was funded by the foreign office in the past). It would be very wrong of the BBC to spend money hand over fist just to appeal to one section of the fee paying public (F1) fans. No other sport has it's full competition aired on FTA UK TV, think of the dungstorm if the BBC decided to try to bid market rates for say, the premiership or even the championship. If the F1 management want more money than the BBC can justify, how is it the BBC's fault?

Not really, it may not appeal to you but you can bet that it does to a certain amount of fee payers. As for the amount of staff, that covers TV, Radio, Web and technical staff covering a range of stages and events. The event will have been rebroadcast around the world and produced revenue that way. They've repeated large chunks of it since the event making for cheap programming. Spent £25m on 'The Voice' to compete with a certain Cowell. Waste of money Again, this smacks of being selfish. As above the voice will appeal to a different section of the fee paying public. Should they suffer just because F1 fans want every single game on FTA? You bring BBC3 and 4 into it, but again those appeal to a different type of viewer and broadcast in the evenings. The BBC want to keep as many people within the "BBC channel family" as possible and if those channels didn't exist they would lose out on that, leading to more people saying "why do we pay the fee?, it doesn't appeal to us" The BBC move would have cost them a fair whack anyway as they need to move out of TV Centre. It's a listed building for starters and they've been on about shifting out for years now as massive studios just aren't needed anymore. People are always banging about the BBC being London centric so this is a damned if they do, damned if they don't kinda thing. And now something that people are ACTUALLY watching they want to pull - yeah, nice one BBC. Morons. Sigh. The F1 management wanted more money, the BBC couldn't justify the cost anymore, even if it did give them X amount of viewers. The market decides the cost, the BBC decided it wasn't worth it anymore. No other competition has every single event on FTA, why should F1 be any different?
