theeggmaster Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 HP TC1100 Tablet PC with 1.5Gb Ram. Bought to see how useful Tablet PC's might be in school, but as they don't make them anymore, I just use it when I'm working in different rooms.

boomam Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 I use my own laptop, as the one they offered me when i started was rubbish. They said 'we usually spend £300 on laptops'. So i didnt think i'd bother. Got a PDA phone off them instead which i stopped using after 3 months. My personal laptop which i never used at home anyway is a Thinkpad Z60M with the memory upgraded to 2Gb. Runs quite well considering its age and its running Vista. . I do want a fancyer laptop off them though, but as with most people here, for one that i could replace my workstation with and be portable, i'd need to be VERY well speced, and that leads to nigh on a grand for one, which i doubt the school would cough up to pay.
witch Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 i don't even have my own dedicated pc i do most my work on the servers them selves though! Me too! I am typing this on the server as there is nowhere else. All IT suites are almost always used to full capacity so I couldn't go anywhere else if I wanted to. A laptop for the tech would be lovely but all I have is a mongrel I made up from dead laptops from both the schools I work in. As they were both written off, it's mine, not the schools.

buzzard Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 Me and the Techs all have a Dell latitude D630 with 4gb of RAM 160Gb HDD, Core 2 Duo 2.2Ghz (T7500). I personally run XP but licenced for Vista Ultimate x64. but until the people I support move over I'll probably stay with XP on this work machine. As we work in 26 different places we have the docking ststion at our base with 2 x 20" Samsung SyncMaster 205bw. We also have HTC TYTN II PDA phones Without this kit it would take us alot longer to respond and resolve any issues in centres. I'm not suprised to see some techs without kit, in the first school I working in as a tech we had FA and had to book computers in order to get anything done...... nice

Basic Dell Vostro 200 workstation, which is perfectly adequate for anything we've used it for so far, and does have a humungous 22-inch screen that takes up most of the width of my office (hey, it's a small office). -- David Hicks

I am winging for an Apple (but want one myself so might just bite the bullet) and I also want to build a mini-pc with an ITX board with touch screen but again...that may be a home project... I'm shocked people are working on their servers! Surely you can cobble some old bits together and build some kind of monster?!?

browolf Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 (edited) We don't get given laptops here. same here. only the NM gets them. on my desk i have a fujitsu scenic x101 P4, added ram to 1GB and a cheap ati card for dual monitor, 160gb HDD & dual layer 16x rewriter. but it still struggles abit if i have to many apps open. I've gone through about 6 laptops in the past year, as each time I aquire one from somewhere, within a fortnight someone else's breaks and needs to be replaced, and guess what? mine is usually the only "spare" one going I've given up on having a laptop now, I'll stick to my desktop and I've always got my own personal eeePC (XP Pro) and HP iPaq to take with me on my travels

Core 2 Duo 2GB RAM 300GB HDD 19" Widescreen I am still sitting here with a 2.4 GHz Intel Something, 256 MB RAM and 2x 40GB Hard drives, and mine does the most work!!

Kitkatninja Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 I just replaced mine and my senior tech's laptop (Toshiba SP A100 - C2D 2GHz, 2gb of Ram, x1600gc) with the Acer 6920g. Nice laptop (we got it cheaper from our suppliers), the only gripe I have with it is the keyboard, it isn't as nice as the Tosh's. Had to wipe the OS to put Vista Enterprise 64-bit edition on so that I can use all 4gb of ram. It runs VM's sweetly... -Ken
dezt Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 Replaced the acer aspire with a HP nx7400 (2GB RAM, 120GB HD, Core2 Duo) about 8 months ago, when we got a new head he said to me get a brilliant laptop for yourself and i'll have your old one. Now my old one is sat on my shelf after it has mysteriously got a big crack down the screen, but the head didn't drop it (or so he told me).......

I have a 17" Dell Precision M90 notebook with Core 2 Duo, Nvidia Quadro graphics, 2gb memory and a 100gb 7200 rpm HDD with a docking station and a 20" external TFT screen. The school got it 'free' from a supplier when we bought 80 DELL laptops from them and I claimed it

I make do with any that I commandeer from around the place but they are usually taken back in short order. Have got a decent spec desktop (unbranded) but it tends to slow with my daily applications, thats and it hates any kind of scanning equipment:p I did have an old lappy from years ago for switches as it was the only one with a serial port. Unfortunatly somewhere along the line of the build project (or this phase of it) it got damaged and so is now spare parts. Ah well, I can dream of a laptop someday:D
