Just wondering what kit you guys have been issued with as a techy at school/work.

When I arrived there was a new Dell Latitude D510 with 60GB HDD + 512MB RAM.

Im now wanting a new laptop and give my perfectly fine laptop to a teacher. I figure that rather then getting a new laptop for a teacher that hardly ever hits 30% CPU usage with office and IE I figure the money would be better spent on a faster 1 for myself.

I run VM's all the while, testing - burning - encyripting etc so I'd like a Dell Precision™ M65 but its tallying up at £1200! - We may get it for £900ish as we get alot of good deals via them.

So what do you guys use and mainly for what?

I got rid of my laptop & replaced it with a 3ghz P4 HT DELL Precision tower system with 1gb memory, mirrored HDD and a 19" TFT screen 2 years ago. I have a UMPC to take with me (new toy!) if I go walk-about.

Jesus!!!1 A techys tool is a laptop + various other things..

I'd put in for a laptop and say its a vital tool. When networkin, perfect for plugging in n testing the point etc etc.

Well keep posting..

3yo Inspiron 8600 here. Runs Vista with Aero fine on an extrenal monitor at 1024x768 but stuggles at the laptops 1920x1200.

Fab laptop still well spec'ed now - Centrino 1.7GHz / 1GB RAM / 80Gb HDD / DVDRW / bluetooth plus the lush high res screen

I've got an Acer Aspire 1362LMi

Looked like a good deal 2 years ago, but it won't take vista so I can't look at it yet.

Sempron 2800+

2Gb Ram

15.0" TFT LCD

Nvidia Geforce FX Go 5200 - reason vista won't give me pretty graphics

60 Gb Hdd

DVD + - RW

802.11 b/g wireless

does everything else I need it to do but i'm hoping to get a new one that'll take vista, something like a sony vaio.

Most the time, I just shell into it from my aging T23.

My current laptop is a HP nc8000 (Pentium-M with 512MB RAM and ATI graphics). I must admit that it is a bit of a brick an is only really a stop gap until I get something slimmer.

The machine was purchased second hand from 1st Tech for a couple of hundred quid and is perfectly adequate for most things... although more RAM would allow for VMs, etc.

I currently run Debian on the laptop.

Dual core Sony Vaio SZ2 here... but I had to buy it myself. Replaces my desktop for most things too.

Vista Capable the sticker says and the specs suggest... Haven't tried yet and can't run the vista tool.

I have a 300MHz P2 Dell with 64mb of RAM running a very cut down version of XP. Runs faster than my 1GHz Mini-ITX based laptop and its brilliant for programming switches as the COM port just works, unlike a lot of newer ones which either dont have them or refuse for work correctly.

None - non-teaching staff arent allowed to be issued that kind of thing here.

Only when we had a managment change were we allowed to upgrade our desktops (2 for 5 people at one point) from AMD K6's

Don't have a work one as I hate using laptops for long periods - its my big hands and those small keyboards.

I do own a laptop, but it only goes on my travels.

I dont have my own, but use one of the pool ones when needed or my own personal one. I have a HP ZD7000, very nice laptop, wifi, 80gb hard drive, 2gb ram, runs Vista without aero as it doesnt like my FX5200 VGA card in it, trial install of vista found it and it worked, final install of real vista and it doesnt! Grrrr, never mind
