tjay Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Hello there, As I sit here in my office looking up things on Edugeek I started thinking about how many female technicians/ network managers there are out there. I sometimes feel that I am the only one. I have been doing the job for five years now and not only do manage the computers but also fix laminators, glasses or anything with a plug. I have only come across two female technicians in the past and started to think why. Any ideas?

So I think the trend of being a techy may well be becoming a lass male-oriented profession. I can't see it becoming 50/50 in the near future though, just because males do seem to show a much stronger interest in the working of the systems rather than just using them. 1
pcstru Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 We have : Network Manager, Information Systems Administrator and one Technician, all female. That's half of the permanent on site team.

kaphc Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Sometimes I feel I don't qualify as a "techie" - I am crap at tech-speak, and in forums I really struggle to explain stuff. But I do think (IMHO) I'm pretty good at human-speak and fooling the management! Am also happy up a ladder changing a projector, under a desk plugging in cables but I do draw the line at being the school unoffical electrician. I'm trying to think of how many women I've worked with in IT, both in education and in the private sector. I've come up with a big fat 0 so far - always been the lone lass in all-male teams. I did come across a female school tech who was my tutor on an OU course though.

I've never come across this attitude in IT, tho' we don't have this sort of back story. Could I be the first to say that some of my best friends are women?

tb2571989 Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 In my time I've worked with one female IT technician (although she was half IT technician and half PE techician), while met a female network manager when I was on a traning course for the VLE. Young (my age, ~21) female technicians are something reminiscent of a mythical creature.

I am one of two female tecies in a team of 16 so not quite alone, the undergraduates studing Computing here is approximately 250 over the three year groups, but of these 250 only 22 are female.
john Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 I should have added the background to that, its just the ICT Managers at secondary level, I am sure we have many more technicians in both secondary and primary as I don't have those figures to hand but you are right and its good to see a redressing of the gender imbalance
