Office 2007 vs Office 2010

We're still using office 2003, however since Sims will soon require 2007 and since we're changing the way we licence Office it's now time for us to take the next step.

 

What are people thoughts? Jump straight to 2010, or go to 2007.

I would definately go straight to 2010. It is much more intuitive to use than 2007 as they have redesigned the 'ribbon'. We have just rolled it out here and everybody loves it.

 

Only problem I'm having at the moment is with Outlook 2010 which is crashing on 2 PC's that just so happen to be the only ones using exchange accounts. I'm not sure why yet just started investigating.

We are skipping straight to 2010 from 2k3 - i don't see the point in going to 2k7 tbh as there is now a newer version

 

same as not going to win 7 and going to vista instead in my eyes.

EDIT: never had a problem with outlook 2010 with exchange - have around 15 people using here - soon to be 1500!

The way I saw it put was Office 2007 v Office 2010 is like Vista v Win 7

i.e. Office 2007 is good but 2010 is the finished article.

Yes definately go straight to 2010- it is much more polished as has been said, and if you go to 2007 you'll be forced to upgrade again in another couple of years.

aye we jumped from 2003 to 2010.

 

I never had a problem with 2007 but 2010 just fixes up a few minor issues that 2007 introduced (the office button is reverted back to 'file' for example)

We're going straight to 2010 for curriculum but on the admin network where SIMS is used we went to 2007. We were advised that 2010 wasn't supported.

Given the choice I would have stayed with 2003 until 2010 was ready. However we are currently on 2007 and it is not universally popular. The absence of the 'File' Menu [replaced by the 'Office Button'] is a major source of complaint for some here. Edited May 6, 2011 by 6Foot2

Tbh I cant believe people would complain it doesnt say "File" instead its an orb, seems like a petty point really.

Agreed. But it is still a major sticking point for some of my users. They just don't like it.

As far as I know, it's now supported in the Spring 2011 release. I'd double check that of course

eh you always have users who hate even a small amount of change. You have to drag them kicking and screaming over as otherwise you'd be still running Windows NT4 with office 97 Within 6 months they won't even care

I would go to the free of charge Openoffice. It looks like word and is compatable with more file types. Fed up of having to upgrade hardware spend more cash and have licence hassles.

 

The introduction of the docx file type with Office 2007 and the change in menu did it for me. It stressed out users. All users want is to type and print and a standard file type that opens on all PC's.

Just out of interest, does the introduction of the new Microsoft licensing model still make MS office too expensive for you?

We moved from Office 97 to Office 2007 and will be moving to Office 2010 this summer.

 

The switch to 2007 was pretty straightforward and we didn't get any complaints staff and students picked it up pretty quickly, I would imagine it will be the same for our users going to 2010. If you are a SIMS user, Office 2010 now works fine (according to CAPITA) so I don't envisage you having any issues.

I haven't fully tested it myself yet. Just insalled it on a test machine yesterday, so will have a play next week - with some big reports and SIMS profiles.

I can't say I have any problems of that nature with Office 2010 and SIMS. I use it a lot and it seems to run fine.

Currently transitioning to 2010 with startup scripts, room by room. Save for a hugely annoying oversight where I didn't check if the En-UK proofing tools would install (so I deployed to 150 PCs without spellcheck!) it's been very easy. Still runs fine on our PCs with 512MB of RAM too.

Very simmilar to our experience, some did not even realise it had changed till they were told.

I've got 2010 on my personal laptop and like that Outlook has got the ribbon like word and excel. Want to move to 2010 in the office.
