CESIL Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 I found myself sort of watching Holby City this week (my wife is a dedicated viewer) and thought I was watching an advert for @pple! There were iPads popping up all over the place being used to show patients x-ray results etc. which I guess was ok but then... ...a senior doctor announced that as a colleague was away he was looking after his mobile phone...which just happened to be an iPhone. I didn't think iPhone users ever left their phones behind...let alone stop looking at them for more than 5 minutes Oh and then the said doctor was called for advice and answered something like "in a minute, I am just firing small birds at targets"...boy the NHS must be rushed off it's feet! 2
CESIL Posted April 28, 2011 Author Posted April 28, 2011 I just remembered...at one point a doctor loaned a young patient a DSLR to play with and then later we saw her sitting up in bed using one of the iPads to view her photos...no mention of how she got the pictures from the camera to the tablet...unless the NHS also had the extra cable or card reader lying around... ...boy do I feel grumpy today...still at least off work again tomorrow to watch a wedding (involving a wealthy family) paid for by all of us...where's my fecking invite then!
joe90bass Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 ...and breathe... And I think you'd better stop talking to yourself or the men in white coats will be around soon!
FN-GM Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 And I think you'd better stop talking to yourself or the men in white coats will be around soon! Then he will see more iPads and get more annoyed! 1
Jamman960 Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 You missed the scene in the operating theatre where the nurse had to put her phone down before she could assist lol I also thought it was an apple Ad, Apple has always been good at product placement(watch virtually any movie, if they use a computer its more than likely an apple!) but that episode was a tad over the top!, I thought the BBC were supposed to be unbias'd (I don't watch it by choice honestly guv! - my wife(nurse) likes to watch and pick holes/guess diagnosis's at every corner)
Dos_Box Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 (edited) BBC News - Product placement ban on British TV lifted Yup, there is now product placement on UK tv. It's probably taken a couple of months to get contracts signed and scripts re-written to fit them in. Edited April 28, 2011 by Dos_Box
LeMarchand Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 BBC News - Product placement ban on British TV lifted Yup, there is now product placement on UK tv. It's proberbly taken a couple of months to get contracts signed and scripts re-written to fit them in. Surely that's not allowed on the BBC, though?
Jamman960 Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 And it will continue to be banned for BBC shows. They were fairly sly about it and never mentioned apple by name... think I only saw the apple logo once
Dos_Box Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 Are the shows made by an external company and shown on the beeb though? Is that a get-around?
Disease Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 BBC are notallowed to use product placement, From the linked article: It will not be allowed in news, current affairs or children's programmes - or for alcoholic drinks and foods high in salt, sugar and fat. And it will continue to be banned for BBC shows If they are going to use PP then the fee should be scrapped.
LosOjos Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 If they are going to use PP then the fee should be scrapped. I think that's exactly what they should do, or just do what every other channel does and advertise, you have to sit through 10 minutes of BBC advertising anyway so why not throw in a couple of contracted adverts? I hate paying a licence fee, I rarely watch TV and when I do it's even rarer that it's BBC, so why should I be forced to pay for it?
localzuk Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 I think they're trying to mimick the most modern aspects of the NHS aren't they? iPads are supposedly being introduced in some NHS Trusts/hospitals if I remember correctly. There was something on El Reg last year about it.
Jamman960 Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 The iPad use wasn't too bad and half the time was being used constructively - X-Ray's etc but the blatant iPhone use wound me up. One Dr had lent the others SLR camera to a patient(like that'd ever happen) and in a later scene the Dr that had been lent an iPhone was wondering around playing Angry Birds then started moaning about how he couldn't find his camera and needed to take a picture of some rash... the other Dr then points out that the phone could be used as a camera... queue iPhone interface demo on screen It seemed as though the whole thing had been setup to show off the iPhone's features and show that even an older "Technophobe" could use one
rad Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 I think you should moan to Points of view, for every mention of Edugeek I'll throw a £10 er in a bucket!!
GrumbleDook Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 Chatting with a BBC Exec at an Open Source event the other year he was pretty open about how much of a game changing position the use of external production companies had put the BBC in. The company might make a show / series for the US and include a heap of product placement, and then the editors have to cut things out for it to be shown on UK TV. Product Placement in the UK will make it even harder, as the repeats of BBC shows on Dave, etc will be fine to use PP, but you can't have it in the original. The ban means that the Beeb will lose a valuable revenue stream which could help lower the TV licence.
Gibbo Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 The only ITV programme I watch is Corrie and I've noticed branded products (rather than the fake "Betterbuy" brand) making more of an appearance in the past couple of months.
LosOjos Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 for every mention of Edugeek I'll throw a £10 er in a bucket!! ...which you'll then promptly take to your local?
john Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 Have you all been reading my Facebook? I put just last night how much I enjoyed seeing Elliot the technophobe, disorganised, chaotic but really lovable man playing Angrybirds on a phone as its so-un Elliot, but you have to know Holby City to realise how funny that was. The BBC were getting bad last year in the F1, Jake loves his iPad, they had them before the major launch and didn't have them in cases and you could tell he was being told keep his hand in the right place to cover the logo but he failed many times. As has been said, mobile technology is coming more mainsteam in the NHS anyway, fine Holby City and Casualty are rather trendy exceptions with lots of gadgets but they are taking over the world i'm afraid.
MK-2 Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 at least its real gadgets being shown and not the hi tech crappery CSI NY tries to show off 1
CAM Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 If a licence strips adverts out of the Footy or F1 (Ironically sports shows plenty of sponsorships on the telly...) then I am happy to see it stay. Nothing annoys me more then 10 minutes of adverts in the middle of a show. It can and has made me get up and walk off instead of watching it. TBH you need to watch the speedway grand prix if you want to see shameless product placement. Everything from cans of drink to hat logos and blatant "This is the sponsor on my arm, I'll rest my Gate position card on it when showing the camera." Worst was one guy called Greg Hancock who throws phrases like "That was a monster crash!" into every interview. Guess who he is sponsored by, want to strangle half the riders every time they do it.
MK-2 Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 Worst was one guy called Greg Hancock who throws phrases like "That was a monster crash!" into every interview. Guess who he is sponsored by Monster Munch?
jumpinjamez Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 I do not understand how the unbiased BBC pushes Facebook and Twitter pages on pretty much every show, nice adverts for other services.
LeMarchand Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 The company might make a show / series for the US and include a heap of product placement, and then the editors have to cut things out for it to be shown on UK TV. Was wondering about this. Surely they have to allow some through, though? Some shows - I'm looking at you, "Chuck" - even revolve plots around the product placement. I do not understand how the unbiased BBC pushes Facebook and Twitter pages on pretty much every show, nice adverts for other services. Having no account (or much interest) in either, I'm not sure why EVERYONE is always pushing the two of them.
SYNACK Posted April 28, 2011 Posted April 28, 2011 Product placement can totally ruin a story, I have completely stopped buying and reading Clive Cussler books thanks to one that was so filled with Apple product placement I had to pick up an Apple catalogue for a comparitive break. It was aweful and stupid. Its ashame that the BBC have taken the worst from the Americans and allowed it to be implemented.
