Who uses what proxy server inside their network?

Is there anywhere where I can find a list of the most used proxy servers within schools or can people reply back with their chosen supplier and main strength main weekness?

Our LEA Websense servers have Squid proxy on them - no complaints to say about them.

Web filtering is provided by the ISD here, and they're using McAfee Smart Filter I think. From the inside I have a Squid proxy that authenticates against the Active Directory for student traffic logging. The internal Squid proxy uses the external ISD proxy as a cache peer. After some kinks were worked out it works remarkably well.

Main proxy is provided by YHGfL which I think uses squid (don't quote me). For student traffic monitoring and blocking the ocasional website we use Smoothwall Express in house.

internally we have isa2006 for pupils & squid proxy on debian netinstall for staff

 

the isa has a bespoke room access management system tacked on the side, the staff don't need restrictions or authentication so theirs is a minimal install and config. our proxies forward to the LEA proxies that use netsweeper.

We are using the Palo Alto PA-500. absolutely brilliant firewall as it is application aware. Great as you do not have to worry about opening ports or lots of rules. Just allow the program access and that is it.

Squid/Dansguardian/Samba on Gentoo linux here. NTLM authentication means that everything is logged. I've had various companies ring me up trying to flog us stuff in the past, but usually quote stupid money to do pretty much the same thing we do now, with only a nicer interface.

ISA 2006 (and BT webfilter for web filtering).

 

I would say flexibility is an advantage with ISA 2006 as you seem to be able to do anything and there are wizards for MS servers (like OWA),

 

Disadvantages? Overally complex may. 2nd hand; consultants have mentioned glitches that they have not been able to resolve (solution re-install!).

 

But I've not had the chance to try any others, so I can't speak with any authority.

If people are like us, they have a local ISA/TMG box which forwards to an upstream cache such as those provided by SWGfL. The reason being, ISA/TMG is very cheap for schools (we're talking £40 a year sorta money), and they don't need anything else as it is just a local cache/firewall and not the filtering device. Also, it is very simple to install for basic use.

Squid 3.0 here running on CentOS 5, it connects to the embc who run squid and netsweeper.

ISA, works well and fairly cheap, used to use squid.
