A new social group for those of us who develop a nervous tik every time we are asked to install English(UK) and feel angry when the only option is English(US)

 

It is also for those of us who spend so much time spotting the spelling, punctuation and grammar errors we forget to read the posts! :rolleyes:

 

Never mind the joys of a beautifully used, well placed semi-colon!

As much as I believe in Mr Fry's point of view that language should be allowed to grow and evolve... the sheer scale of laziness that is forcing this change is my pet irk.

 

The written language is based in the idea that it helps us develop speech patterns, with some punctuation to denote pauses and others to denote emphasis. Without a good understanding of this then we lose so much.

I think you should have your own sub-forum so everyone else can ignore it ;b

 

When I first got on the net almost 20 years ago, the still significantly academic consensus said grammar/spelling pedantry in forums i.e. largely conversational places, was bad netiquette.

Perhaps, until we get to the point at which it is very difficult to understand what others are trying to convey, given their lack of said grammar and spelling! :)

While I'll agree up to a point I will repeat what I've said several times over. It's the content and meaning of what is being said that is important - not the method in which it is being said. While spelling and grammar is important it is secondary to the message.

 

I know I can't spell for toffee and I'm sure I've used more than the odd punctuation mark in the wrong place. But really, I don't care! So long as you understand the meaning of what I type I can't see as being of that great an importance.

 

Sorry. (actually, I'm not that sorry - just trying to be polite ;))

I will repeat what I said: spelling and grammar enable the message to be put across effectively. The odd typo or misplaced semi-colon doesn't matter too much, of course, but when the errors escalate, the original message is lost.

There are a large number of words in the English language whose meaning changes profoundly with the change of just one letter (e.g. Affect and Effect) so it is quite important to ensure (insure?!) that you use the correct one. Otherwise you will be misunderstood.

@tmcd35, I agree that meaning is everything. However, good grammar ensures that what is written is less likely to be misunderstood.

 

Unfortunately, poor grammar is irritating to those of us who can spell and punctuate, in the same way that an untidy room is to those who cannot stand mess. We cannot help it! :rolleyes:

 

Having said that, I'm as guilty as the next in not reading through my typing before posting. So I regularly end up editing after posting. It has taken real self-control not to correct my mis-typing of 'tic' in my opening post on this thread! :p

 

Having a social group for us to moan in, might stop us taking threads off-topic as we let off steam! :D ( I only said might!)

Another thing to remember is that for people who English is not their first language, reading poor grammar and spelling will be a lot more confusing than it is to us.

 

They won't know the nuances of our language to the extent that we do.

On any forum where you're asking for help, people tend to regard native English speakers who use txt/leet speak or just can't construct a sentence as idiots.

 

So if you're inarticulate or come across as a twit, you're likely to be ignored (or possibly flamed, depending on the forum).

These very forums spell check your every post in US English, am I the only one who thinks that US English is just lazy English?! Sure, some of the spellings make more sense on the face of it, but grammatically they're breaking the rules! Color?! What the hell is color? Oh, you mean colour, well then why didn't you say so?!
