What I did today..

Just finished wiring the patch panel with Cat6 in his new office.. just need to get a few more Data Ports for the existing trunking and wire that up.. Then get the caretaker to fit the new benching, install my whiteboard and give the whole thing a lick of paint...

 

Downside is that the office is located between 2 classrooms - that I need to walk through to get in and out.. Oh and one of the classrooms is the D&T Workshop -

I stripped down and repaired the remote controller for the hall projector screen after it had been trodden on once too often.

cleaned the office (a little) i discovered a floor after moving the broken laptops and empty toners.

 

i even got the vac out the sound of screws beeing sucked up was worrying but you aint done a good job unless you have a few screws left over.

I setup a McAfee ePO server then set a startup script to remove nasty sophos then a GPO to install my nice new pretty McAfee Agent to install VSE 8.7i!

I setup tmg URL filtering for our guest wiresless network for the sixth formers and next a captive portal for them

I discovered my desk - after working my way steadily through several mounds of paperwork:( Still it's all nice and neat now, filed away so I'll never be able to find anything again!

I set up a new vitual host using ubuntu and KVM and also an apache webserver on another box and moved a vm from a vmware server to the new kvm server

I started to learn inkscape so i can do vector graphics as well as bitmaps, and swore lots at the HP autoloader for not talking to backupexec.

I made a start compiling the new IT stockbook in an Excel spreadsheet - from scratch - because they've gone and lost the original stockbooks......it's going to take days and I'm not a happy bunny......

i helped prove the fact that the radius server & ruckus system in the school have no deny options on the teachers wireless and just give out certificates so anyone with an account could get unfiltered access

Hmmm what did I do?

 

1. Started an exam for WJEC Applied AICT5 this morning. Made sure everyone could log in correctly and all their files were in the right place.

 

2. Started work on rebuilding our Dell PowerEdge 2950 server. Installed a new hard drive into a new virtual array with help from FN-GM on here and the advice he gave. Updated the PERC software and downloaded the PERC Bios update to find out the floppy drive was broke in the server.

 

3. Chased the techie for the USB drive - he's lost it.

 

4. Been monitored teaching by my line manager. A good esafety lesson for Year 10 pupils. Happy with that.

 

5. Dismantled my old desk - metal thing with leccy points. Moved a new desk into my room.

 

6. Finished the 2950 by setting up WDS and migrating the old images over. Installed WAIK and MDT2010.

 

7. Came home to have stirfry

 

8. Sitting here looking at Year 12 coursework whilst the missus watches TV downstairs.

Wrote a backup script for the Assistant Principal to back his laptop hard drive up to our NAS (as he wants to keep things on his hard drive!), Moodle server admin. Spent the afternoon doing a mixture of FMS related things (because our Bursar has passed away and was helping the finance assistant with something) and started working on a script to email me when someone leaves their computer on all night!

 

Oh and general helpdesk!

well this evening i went in to college to do some cisco and sql stuff only to have synetrix drop out 10 minits in.

Business teacher said to me "you know those hessian boards at the back of the row of computers in the computer room, can you move them"

 

I'm thinking on my a*se here sipping a cup of coffee, these boards are heavy

 

I reply: Well they are there for health and safety purposes so the kids don't trip on the wires or remove network leads and so on..

 

Teacher: "We are having a parents evening and we need some display boards moved 3 flights of stairs and it's not my job to move them"

 

Now I'm getting mad

 

Me: Well it's not my job either, I'm here to look after the network and computers, have you asked the caretakers ?

 

Later I see my techie moving the boards, I gave him a verbal about what a soft sh*te he was.

Started the day working at home, just finishing a document I started yesterday for one half of our patch, headed into the office and ended up going to the other side to collect 6 servers and also removed a blade to be brought to this side.

 

Unloaded servers, headed down to the data centre to install the removed blade and get talked through how to setup the iDrac on it, headed to a school where we use their conference suite and reconfigured a laptop that one of the trainers had so they could connect to our network, been on going for months that. Stopped by another site on the way back to the office to get dinner from the cafe.

 

Then proceeded for the next 3.5 hours trying to get a server installing Windows sever so that I can eventually ghost on and load to the other 5 or 6 we have here read to be distribution points for SCCM 2007.

 

Left office came home had tea and chilled, dialled back into work onto said server and did the Windows update etc as the internet is quicker at night, spent some 5 hours this evening back and forth on that, nipped into town to see a mate that I had not seen for a week or so and give her some bits, came back home and chilled again and just finished off the server, browsing web found some interesting bits so been reading them and now I am on here getting sorted for bed.

 

Also did do quite a bit of filing at home and shredding.

 

Been a good day, could get into the swing of this new role of assisting the implementing of SCCM 2007, more work from home and its quieter here

If you could keep me posted on your Captive portal efforts I'd be grateful - we have one but for some reason it doesn't work properly.

I found a Kyocera fs1020D printer under a pile of junk that was getting recycled. it's now on my desk, working perfectly. Previous Tech must have put it there at least 4 years ago! The 1996 HP Laserjet 6p that was on my desk can now can now be used elsewhere:rolleyes: as I've got the 1020D - the D stands for DUPLEX:D
