HELP!!- Find me a Keyspan adaptor!

My new laptops (courtesy of John Graham) dont have a serial port and my old whiteboards need one!

This has happened before, and in the past, I have used Keyspan adaptors but I cannot get hold of them for love nor money. The school has no credit card and I am not too keen to buy them myself.

I have tried other serial/usb adaptors, in fact I bought one but it doesnt work.

Can anyone help?

An old or spare desktop that has a serial port thats dedicated for the room to work with the board ?

That's because Keyspan are now owned by Tripp Lite who don't make the adapters any more, though you can get the drivers from their website if you need them - as I did the other day.

There are plenty of other types of USB-->serial adapters on the market however.

I use Wasp USB-Serial adapters for my adaption needs. Never had a single issue with them. Wasp Serial to USB Converter

However, as far as I know, Tripp Lite (aka Keyspan) still make their own adapters: USA-19HS - High-Speed USB Serial Adapter Keyspan by Tripp Lite

Suppliers should still be able to source them via the usual channels too. (Insight UK is a reseller of theirs, so a call to them should result in a quote I'd imagine).

I know Promethean boards come with two types of adapters...one serial, the other is USB. Try plugging in a USB cable into the board at the back.

Right - thanks for all the replies:

I know there are lots of other adaptors out there, and I can google it myself thank you - but I have tried two other types and neither worked so I am loth to spend the school's money on such things. That's why I asked :) If someone can tell me that X brand works with old Promethean boards then woohoo

The Prometheans do not have a USB connection. I thought they did too - I have looked, and asked Promethean themselves who say no - wish they did...

As for the offers - yes please Bossman, Gibbo and Plexer (I need two at the moment but have other laptops waiting for replacement)

Do you want payment? (oo-er-missus)

Or postage?

I'll pm my address to you all

Thanks a lot

* I tried a port replicator and that didn't work either.

Are there any expansion cards for laptops that give you serial?

I know you used to be able to get PCI versions for desktops but I don't know about laptops, nor do I know their proper name/format for me to properly search for them.

I don't know - I thought an adaptor would be easier- but maybe I can look into it

I know from experience the Promethean boards are very fussy for some reason on USB to serial adaptors, actually various products are, I have a phone system that hates my cheap USB-Serial adaptor but every other one I work on is fine with it. Randomness I tell you :)

Well as a side I need a keyspan adaptor and the promethean serial connection cable not the usb. Promethean reseller wants £56 for the cable.

or a promethean usb lead! Then steal a serial connection from another board.

Can anyone help me???

I have about 4 or 5 promethean serial leads upstairs in my store room, as every new board we've brought recently has come with one, but we don't need them as we use the USB lead for them all - I just like hoarding stuff as it seems such a waste to put a perfecally good lead in the bin.

If you live near kent (I don't know where you are) or remind me to send one by PM'ing me tomorrow with your address, you're are welcome to it for the cost of postage (free if you collect it of course)

Someone's miss or mrs popular ;) lol

A desktop out of the question then I take it :)

Sorry, didn't answer you did I? Yes, it is , for two reaons: the teachers put all their work on their laptops and want to be able to use it straight off their own machines and we don't have any spare machines anyway :)

(oh, and it's 'Ms' actually!)

hills components do a similar one to the keyspan

Yes, I noticed that but I really need confirmation from someone that it will DEFINITELY work with the promethean, as I said I have tried two others (one was a targus, can't remember the other) and they should have worked, but didn't

Thanks for the thought though
