VNC and windows 7

Which make/version are you using with windows 7? ultravnc is what we've always used with XP but there seems to be problems with windows 7 (or perhaps it's just me)

 

Pressing ctrl alt del doesn't work

The video very very slow and juddery (constantly have to manually click refresh to see whats going on)

 

Wondered if there was a more out of the box version that you can just install and run with windows 7 without a hitch? I'd prefer not to have to faff with the settings to get it to run smoothly

 

If on the other hand though im best getting ultravnc working, any tips for getting it to run smoothly?

I've been searching high and low for an alternative myself.

 

We currently use RealVNC for our network, but that seems to also have some flakey problems with Windows 7. Would also like to know if anyone has found a suitable VNC for Windows 7 or other monitoring tool.

uvnc works fine. have you got the latest version?

Using UltraVNC here and don't have any issues - I do turn down/off UAC entirely though so that might be a reason why.

I think it depends on how you're running it. If you run it as a service then I thought that it wouldn't work (services are not allowed to interact with the desktop except by popping up a message saying "process X wants your attention" but if you run it as a user then it should be OK (eg you have a shortcut to vnc.exe in the startup group)

ah pants, ive always installed it as a service so that might be why then, with UAC enabled i can get it to work, but it take about 60seconds of sitting and wating before it works (could be that im currently running windows 7 on the slowest PC in school as a test for kids to batter, though usage seems quick enough)

Latest UltraVNC here (installed as service) without issue. UAC on and off.

Are you using the mirror driver? I found UltraVNC to have bad performance on Vista without the driver, haven't tried on 7 since I'm now just using RDP and Remote Assistance instead.

RDP/Remote Assistance would surely be the way to go, especially considering it's built into Windows?

Remote Assisstance lacks the ability to monitor entire classrooms. Most cases of using VNC for us is to make sure nothing unscrupulous is being done on them (Teacher classroom discipline - that's never done).

 

I'd love to find an alternative to VNC as performance is just shocking, but it looks like UltraVNC might be the only option currently.

Try Intelliadmin.com. You can use it as a "regular" vnc client/server for free, but has some enhancements if you purchase the admin kit and run it in their mode. Works great as a vnc client. I was using this with some windows 7 demo machines as a vnc client until the newest version of ultravnc came out...

I'm having difficulty with VNC in XP in two instances first anything to do with Kaspersky it will not allow me to click on any kaspersky windows or the systray icon. Secondly in office 2007 if you click the office button it doesn't show the menu?

just installed the new tightvnc 2.01 beta on a windows 7 machine and i can connect from older version of tightvnc to that machine well

 

i also have been down the ultravnc route as well but its more complex to get working but once it is working its as good as the new tightvnc

The main issue im having with ultra VNC is when i click to blank monitor and inputs it blanks there screen but it also blanks my remote connection with the big VNC eye picture, what settings am i getting wrong for this to be happening because it seems completely random!

Most defintley we currently use ultraVNC for our windows xp and a few 7 clients. It was responsive and worked well with XP but having some issues with 7. Its slow to use and I find it a resource hog and we are having the ctrl+alt+del problem.

 

I am really interested in looking at remote assistance as well. I just tried it from my machine to a colleagues windows 7 machine and had problems connecting.

 

I check the firewall on colleagues machines and it was allowed and i also enabled remote assistance in my computer, remote.

 

Still doesnt work, any suggestions?

 

Command I have run is msra /offera and %windir%\system32\msra.exe /offerra. it says 'your offer to help could not be sent'

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Moving away from VNC now, using impero on about 75% of the school and that is absolutely flawless! still got VNC setup as a backup but it seems to be fine now, i found with the ctrl+alt+del problem it goes away after a few months of use (very strange)

We have deployed our first win 7 machine and we used tightvnc acting as a server using the latest version running through lanview and it works without any problems. Ok, there was a version of tightvnc which didnt work as well but the latest release seems to work.

Overwrite the cad.exe in ultravncs install folder with the one i've attached, you'll still get a delay of 10-20seconds in it responding but with the latest version it's the only way i could get it to work (i can't remember where i got this or why it works over the other one now but suck it and see)

we use TightVNC's beta 2 and it works fine. server works fine with realvnc or most clients also.
