jamesfed Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 First day back and- Servers are down due to power faliure - APC couldn't keep 2 servers alive to get over the 5min power cut. Internet connection not quite working correctly (keeps dropping out). Found 2 mince pies in office (still tasted ok). E-mail down for first half hour (County got it working again). So any tales from anyone else?
AndySimmo Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 So far so good here, just had to boot up a virtual server and had one problem with a PC in one of the rooms going to be used for presentation. and... it's a P.D. Day!! apart from someone breaking down infront of me in his car. all is good! Update: We're ghosting the I.T. Rooms & several have failed. Yay!
fafster Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 I'm suffering from a stinking cold which wasn't actually that bad until I got in. The obvious conclusion is that work makes me ill.
siuko Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 I am now just starting to use my work pc becuase.... We had a nice leak and it was right above my pc so it has been drying all morning Seems to be working though! Which is good
ssiruuk2 Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 Everythings fine network wise but was asked by SLT.. that they desperately need some help to go and grit / salt the playground and pathways.. so coat on and shovel to the ready
lionsl2005 Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 Sophos stopped updating. have to restart the server. a teachers pc need imaging nothing much. evening TA's MLE training.
laserblazer Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 First question I was asked "Have you locked youtube?" Seems a Y& science module is on Forensic Science and the course work has links to a youtube video. When I tried the link on a filtered computer I got an LEA filter message. When I tried it on my unfiltered computer I got a youtube message saying the vido had been removed because of copyright violations!
dezt Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 Server room was red hot this morning as aircon was pumping hot air in instead of cool air, result was servers shut down because they were too hot, what a great start to 2010
localzuk Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 Got a backup log message saying 'no scratch media' followed by a backup completion message. And 2 boxes of chocolates on my desk So not too bad really!
LosOjos Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 Decided to have a look where we stand with the forthcoming school census... 117 errors, mostly missing data. God I love census...
EduTech Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 All Good Everything working as we left it nice cold cold cold server room!!! staying out of there today so i dont turn into a block of ice! It's a training day so pretty quiet, think i am going to have a play around with Backup Exec to backup SharePoint Should keep me and the NM quiet for a few hours lol. James.
solitaire89 Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 Surprisingly, pretty much all is quiet on the western front! Touch wood, obviously! Only thing I do have is an single client installation of e-aqa science that seems to have gone belly up... re-install hasn't fixed it, so I'm about to start the research. Someone put the kettle on, and locate the hidden chocolate biscuits
TechMonkey Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 Many forgotten passwords, one forgotten username, 2 dead machines & a turned off photocopier no one could remember how to turn on. Not bad I guess.
localzuk Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 All Good Everything working as we left it nice cold cold cold server room!!! staying out of there today so i dont turn into a block of ice! The temperature outside here is so cold, our server room is warmer!
EduTech Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 The temperature outside here is so cold, our server room is warmer! Hmm, True! i didn't think of that it would probably be the same here!!
Dom_ Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 Around 50 forgotten passwords, 5 PC's in one lab where the kids had poked the floppy drive cover out and unseated the ram(left if thankfully!), one of the switches has died, couple of printers going mental and a teacher whose laptop keyboard has started doing random letters whenever he types "Something may or may not have been spilt on it". Nice.
webman Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 The batteries in our server room air con remote control have died.
broc Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 We got off to a good start; arrived at 8am to be told school closed due to snow & ice + heating failure + frozen pipes + generator failure taking out temporary classrooms ..... oh and the servers were down due to extended power cut in the village over the New Year. I am back home, having restored all servers to a working state; 8x WAPs still down due to generator problem. Waiting for email/phone call from HT to update website & say when school is due back.... and more snow is forecast

solitaire89 Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 Is that the Rural Science online assessment software? If so, you may be pleased to know they are not using it this year Sadly not, it's the Nelson Thornes e-science resources thingit (not e-aqa, as I'd put before - blonde moment, sorry!). We're well and truely using it. Well, not the owner of this laptop, obviously Give me strength someone, please!
jamesfed Posted January 4, 2010 Author Posted January 4, 2010 Sadly not, it's the Nelson Thornes e-science resources thingit (not e-aqa, as I'd put before - blonde moment, sorry!). That software is ages old but it’s simply fantastic (at least that’s what the Science dept is saying).
Batman Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 I had a great start to the day. Due to brother in law's transport issues I had to bring my son into work with me. He was picked up soon after I got here so it was ok. Besides, bringing a baby into a girls school isn't such a bad thing; they all like babies so he got to meet some new people I have played my first two pranks of the year so things are underway properly. I rigged up some bangers from some left over christmas crackers on the server room door and my colleagues top draw.
solitaire89 Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 That software is ages old but it’s simply fantastic (at least that’s what the Science dept is saying). I have to say that the teaching resources side of it seem good, but the technician's support docs are fairly pants (I should know....). I just love the way that it doesn't tell you what concentration of chemical you should be using in half the pracs... Just to make my life even easier!
LosOjos Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 Not long now until day #1 is over. I'm giving it 3-1 odds that most of us are going to get another long weekend off thanks to the weather this week
