Hi everyone, I'm a long term member and have spent many, many hours reading the forums on this site. In particular the 'Behind the Red Door' forum has given me many hours of laughter and disbelief during lunch breaks. After working in a school for almost years I moved recently and so haven't been on here as much. In my spare time I've been working on a new web site and wondered if you guys could just take a look and possibly sign up and post a message. The site is in its early stages still but I was hoping a sharp boost in membership might put the site on the map for the business community. Anyway, I appreciate that you're busy but if you could spare five minutes I would be grateful. The site is: Categories - The Small Business Forums Many thanks

Hi Ed, Yes, we've updated the schema. It's taking ages! I don't mind waiting if it is going to do it but at this stage I am doubtful.

Hi everyone, Just a quick update. Our site has now been running since May and we've had lots of interest. If anyone else might find signing up useful, please head over to Categories - The Small Business Forums Many thanks

Hi everyone, We have an old SBS2000 server running which I need to replace. I am setting up a Server 2008 box and have joined it to the existing domain. I am now trying to make the 2008 box a domain controller. I have run dcpromo but the process is taking ages. It is copying across the schema data but every five minutes or so, the process finishes the bit it was doing and asks for the admin password again. I type it in and it goes through copying something else. This keeps repeating and I have been sat here for an hour today typing in the password when requested and most of yesterday. Is this right? Regards

Hello everyone, I have recently launched a new Business Forum web site with a Business Directory. The Business Directory is to allow small and local businesses to get a little free advertising and used to draw members in initially. I'm just posting to ask if there is anyone on here interested in becoming a forum admin on the site. Obviously someone with business experience is crucial and ideally a history of moderating similar sites in the past. In addition, we are looking for people to recommend our site to small businesses. To help get us going, we only launched a week ago, we are offering free advertising for two weeks. As soon as we reach 150 members, we are going to be offering one of those members two week's free advertising on our site. If you know of anyone that this might benefit, please pass it on. Many thanks Categories - The Small Business Forums

Can't you just set the user's e-mail address as the one you want to forward all the mail to? I haven't tried it but that may solve your problem.

Hi everyone, I was just wondering, here in Kent our LA provides basic web hosting free to all of the schools. Is this the same across the country? Regards

Assessment - Visual Reports, Graphs, Targeting of Specifc Groups
dsm replied to dsm's topic in MIS Systems
Thanks everyone, keep them coming. Resin1: We already produce traffic light spreadsheets in SIMS but we want to do that and more :0) -
Hi everyone, We are a SIMS school and I believe we have used SIMS AM to its full functionality. We are looking to provide staff with graphs, traffic light indicators etc. by exporting the SIMS data to a third-party application/web site so that we can do this. Some leaflets I have on my desk include Welcome, GO 4 Schools - real-time assessment, attendance and behaviour data online, makes it easy for the SLT, middle leaders, classroom teachers, students and parents to access clear, appropriate, meaningful views of that information - online, 24/7 : GO 4 Sc and stars4schools.com - this is the sort of thing we are looking at. Does anyone have any recommendations on a product that would do this? Possibly one of the above or another is you know of it and know it to be good. Many thanks

Summer 20xx?

Hi SYNACK, Thank you. I've seen these and I think they would be ideal to plug a computer into so that pheripherals would automatically have their power cut - monitors, speakers etc. However, I'd like a centrally managed control system for other devices. Something that I can program to power off printers at 4p.m. for example but then still have the central control for when parents' evenings come along, that sort of thing. Regards
-
Ok, forgot the projector bit. Can we focus on the question?
-
A projector was just an example, I would like to use the product for many applications. It would be ideal to have a central control to power off projectors, copiers, printers and many other devices. It would save an awful lot of money and make for an easily manageable system. I would like to fully cut the power to these devices.

Hi everyone, I am trying to find equipment that will allow me to centrally control power sockets. What I would like to do is have a piece of software that allows me to turn power off at certain electric sockets. I have found this solution so far: BBS Online - Overview This appears to be basically what I want. Hopefully it also allows me to set up schedules, e.g. 'power down all projectors at 5.30p.m.' Does anyone know of any other solutions? I have thought about individually managed timers but these will be a nightmare to re-configure once deployed. Regards

Hi everyone, I've just noticed this page Student PCs on Canterbury campus - Information ServicesComputing & IT Services - University of Kent and I would like to see if something similar is possible where I work. Anyone have any idea how I might be able to re-create this? Regards

Frog Live allows you to open a document saved on the VLE, edit it and save it straight back to the VLE. This prevents the problem that you find with most other VLEs where you have to download a document, edit it, save it locally, delete the copy on the VLE and then upload the new copy. Single Sign On to the VLE works with an Active Directory domain. In the 'Server Settings' just type in your domain name and an IP address of one of your domain controllers. This will allow staff/students to log in to the VLE with their normal username and password. Regards

Thanks everyone. We did take a look at WPKG before but were unsuccessful. We just couldn't get it to work. I didn't find their documentation overly helpful. What did you think? Regards

Hi, We have been using Group Policy to deploy software here recently with some smaller packages. What I would like to do now is get a piece of management software that will install software on to client machines but do it in the background whilst the computer is being used. The problem with GP is that it installs the software before a user can log on to the computer therefore making software installations to staff laptops difficult. Does anyone have any recommendations for software that does this? Preferably free! Many thanks

Hello, We would like to set up a system to easily manage software distribution. We have distributed some software via Group Policy however the problem I have with this is that it installs the software before log in. What I would like to do is get a piece of software that distributes the software 'silently' i.e. in the background. Does anyone know of any software that can do this for free or cheaply? Many thanks

I agree... I saw the post linked to a Daily Mail article so immediately dismissed it as tosh!

Hi, Had Frog for a few years now and there's never been a problem with speed - that's one of the best bits because it's hosted on site. Have you got your DNS set up properly? Regards

Hi everyone, We have a Parent Portal on our VLE. We're actually using the Frog VLE but my question concerns all VLEs really. If you have opened up your VLE for parents, can you tell me what pages you have available to them? So far we have: - Main Page - Attendance - Parent Voice (forums) - School Calendar - Governors (list of school governors) - Your Details (displays parent's address, telephone number etc.) - Update Details - Contact School - Parent Portal (explains what it is and why we're doing it) Coming shortly we will also be adding an assessment page but I'd welcome ideas from others about what extra pages we can add. Many thanks
