john Posted December 17, 2009 Posted December 17, 2009 Snowed here rather well just in time for me to go home, my normal 8 minute journey took 1hr 38 minutes!!! I joked when I came home that I bet the trains are not running (I live next to a train station) and I was told no the 6pm came through as normal!!! I could have left my car at work and walked to the next village and got the train (or driven to that as it only took me 6 minutes to drive from work to the train station in the next village) and paid £5 for the train home, and been home in about 1hr less!!! Blasted snow!!!

If your head hasn't given you the day off in the London area, check before you travel as normal using Home | Transport for London and National Rail Enquiries - Official source for UK train times and timetables and it seems the trains aren't too badly affected today. Still worth a check though, it is early days. And if you are taking the car out, expect heavy snow later on in areas around London so consider how you may get it back on your driveway.

Radar is a remote sensing tool used by weather forecasters to analyse the extent and intensity of precipitation. Radar detects objects by transmitting radio waves which are reflected back to the starting point by any object they encounter. Distance can be calculated using the speed of the radio waves and the amount of time that each pulse takes to reach the object and return back to the starting point. Rain, snow and hail all stop the radio waves. The more pulses that are reflected back, the greater the intensity of the precipitation. I'd say it's over 6 inches deep and the roads are awful, it's blizzards here. The headteacher hasn't come in, the network manager hasn't come in. No kids are in... bacon butties in the canteen soon and the office is mine... all mine... *cackle*

We get just as annoyed when the whole news is London-centric. There is a lot more to South of Watford gap than just Londone y'know

Only teasing :-) Although I've spent nearly 25 years in London I'm well aware that the best bits of the country are way north of here so I'll be spending Christmas and New Year in Lancaster, Northumberland and Liverpool. PS - are you sure that there's anything south of London??? :-)
