tech_guy Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 I'm looking for something cerebral PC gaming-wise rather than a shot-em up. Any suggestions? Something with good puzzles / problems to solve.
dalsoth Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 Fallout 3 is a good engrossing game. Not just a shooter. Or something completely different, sword of the stars.
mattx Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 I used to play Earth 2150 & The Moon Project quite a lot many years ago - will have to dig out the media for that and re-install it.... Tell you what I'll do - I've got a load of games [ old ones ] that I don't play much these days, I'll PM you a small list.
Dos_Box Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 I've bee playing Racedriver GRID on my lunch hour. You can get it for £4.99 off Amazon. Best racing game I've played for ages. Shame I've just got Modern Warfare 2. There go my afternoons too!
mattx Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 Just gone through a stash in my loft: Sim City 3000 UK Ed Praetorians Black & White Pharaoh Gold Empire Earth Age Of Empires Gold Ed Soldiers - Heroes Of World War 2 Also found my original CDs of Duke Nukem & Quake [ not the large boxes though ] Will dig out some more stuff tomorrow.....
R0M Posted November 16, 2009 Posted November 16, 2009 Braid is one of the best games I've ever played, Its not that long but verry good puzzle solving game. Took me about 4 or 5 day (at about 1&1/2 hours a day) to figure it all out but well worth getting and not to expencive. Also if you have not played Portal yet that is another must! again not long but rock solid puzzle solving.
Chris_Jones Posted November 16, 2009 Posted November 16, 2009 Another vote for Portal here, fantastic game, really forces you to think around problems, rather than other games that have you shoot through them.
Arcath Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 Portal Is brilliant and i do reccommend that, although you can finish the main story in about 1 1/4 hours (if you know where to go) but you wont make it last longer than 2 hours. Braid is a good little game that can be quite hard in places (ive finished it, but now playing it again on my netbook i cant remember how to do bits of it). Racedriver Grid is a great racing game, i got my copy off steam. Fallout 3 is a good story, if you want something not futuristic Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion runs the same engine (made by the same people, came first). I would recommend looking around the indie games on steam, some of those are excellent and dont cost much
dalsoth Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 Theme hospital the 2d old version not the newer 3d rubbish one. Great little game where you design the rooms and machines and solve the patients problems by hiring more doctors and cleaners and nurses etc..
localzuk Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 Loom - fantastic old game. On a more modern end, how about 'Eve online'? Its a spreadsheet in space - can't get much more puzzling that that Eve Online Learning Curve on Flickr - Photo Sharing!

Dom_ Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 I've just started playing dragon age origins for PC, loving it!
Mako Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 I agree with the above post r.e Dragon Age: Origins. I pre-ordered it, very good game. However for the puzzle element... I'm suprised nobody has mentioned the Myst saga. Five immersive puzzle games for you there, with a number of spin-off games to keep you occupied for hours.
tech_guy Posted November 17, 2009 Author Posted November 17, 2009 Just gone through a stash in my loft: Sim City 3000 UK Ed Praetorians Black & White Pharaoh Gold Empire Earth Age Of Empires Gold Ed Soldiers - Heroes Of World War 2 Also found my original CDs of Duke Nukem & Quake [ not the large boxes though ] Will dig out some more stuff tomorrow..... Thanks, Matt, but I've done all those. Loved B&W.
K.C.Leblanc Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 Dungeon Keeper and Dungeon Keeper 2. You know you want to be slapping those Imps.
Mako Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 Dungeon Keeper and Dungeon Keeper 2. You know you want to be slapping those Imps. You just reminded me that I have a half finished DK2 campaign from a few years ago left to finish. Ah, the nostalgia is thick in this thread. It makes me want to go home and flick through the golden oldies.
patty04 Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 Dungeon Keeper and Dungeon Keeper 2. You know you want to be slapping those Imps. Now i wanna play it again.
sparkeh Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 Monkey Island games? Yes yes yes! I have been playing the New MI games and having lots of fun with them.
mrbios Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 Only a couple of hours into it so far but i'd recommend dragon age, relatively new game which only came out a couple of weeks ago, supposedly with over 100 hours gameplay so you get your monies worth! If you enjoy sword and shield/magic adventure story games then this would be perfect Alternatively just get an amiga emulator and a copy of cannon fodder, that always passes the hours for me

alan-d Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 Lesuire Suit Larry - - I had it on floppy disk
Rawns Posted November 19, 2009 Posted November 19, 2009 Portal - A FPS puzzle. I'm sure most of you have heard/played this but it never gets old!
webman Posted November 19, 2009 Posted November 19, 2009 I highly recommend Machinarium. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/0/0f/Machinarium.jpg/260px-Machinarium.jpg The goal of Machinarium is to solve a series of puzzles and brain teasers. The puzzles are linked together by an overworld consisting of a traditional "point and click" adventure story. The overworld's most radical departure is that only objects within the player character's reach can be clicked on. Machinarium is notable in that it contains no dialogue, neither spoken nor written. The game instead uses a system of animated thought bubbles.
