I have just been asked if i can clean all 180 laptop keyboards and 150 pc keyboards and mice at the end of the day to disinfect them, every day. So as not to spread any possibility of swine flu.............. that is 5.5 hours if it took 1 min per keyboard, oh and i have to do my job as well........... I thought she was joking.............. but she is not!!! Any one know of a spray so i can get the teachers to do it or a company that would do it for us. Or even an idea of how to get out of it .............

The influenza virus can only survive for about 3-4 hours outside of the human body, so there won't be any virus left on the keyboards after being left overnight anyway. More effective would be cleaning the keyboards and mice between different groups of students using them. What I would do is bulk buy in some disinfectant wipes, and the students could be responsible for wiping their own keyboard and mouse when they have finished using the laptop - I can't see any other workable solution and it is what I will propose here should it be deamed necessary in the coming weeks. Or even an idea of how to get out of it ............. Be quicker to get the students and staff to clean their hands with Alcohol Hand Gel like they have in hospitals. Taking the urine if you ask me. Seriously, do a clean tonight, and then make sure there are gel dispensers outside all the ICT Rooms / Laptop trolley. Job done.

Then ask for flu jabs, hep jabs, training, hasmat report on the cleaning materials in relation to being used on electrical equipment, Gloves, overalls, masks ect. if that does not work, I'm sure cleaning those keyboards would likely result in premature failure of said keyboards from liberal application of cleaning fluid
Mako Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 In addition to the above posts, say that such a task should fall to the cleaners - if they really want everything to be cleaned. They'll have all the disinfectant and cleaning products in their cupboards, and should be trained to do it. We don't have any such cleaning materials in our department, save for your standard screen-wipes to remove fingerprints/dust, and we certainly don't go around cleaning keyboards and monitors. Infact our cleaners actually do that. That would make the most sense to me.

glensc Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 Well obviously you can't do it yourself and still keep them up and running, however my manager informs me there are companies that will do this for you, for a fee of course. Perhaps a quote form a 3rd party company will help her realise just how much extra work she's asking you to undertake..

grumpy_git Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 Sounds like one of those reactionary things to make it look like We're Doing Something - however pointless it may be. Surely there's far greater risk from things like door handles, switches, tables etc than a keyboard? Here we are responsible for cleaning screens and keyboards etc, they're probably some of the cleanest things in the school given the calibre of our cleaning staff!
