Probably been asked before, but languages do you know and what is your favourite? Not a poll because I want you to tell me (leaving it more open).

Thanks,

OK, english only and not very proud of that. I do know some phrases in french, german, spanish, czech, slovak and polish, but it only ever seems to be 2 beers please.

English, and a few Manx phrases, and a bit of French.

Unless you mean programming languages, then that would be C#, Java and PHP. With a bit of effort, I could add Perl.

And I stop taking an interest in this thread, after a response like that

Well come on, was it really that hard a question - we are on a computing forum after all. Like I really care less whether somebody can speak Greek. :(

English Fluently

German, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian and Afrikaans at a stretch I can hold a decent conversation

French, Spanish, Portuguese I can order food, drink, ask for directions etc.

Korean and Japanese, only what I know from my martial arts! :D

In descending order of competancy where I can manage a conversation

English

French

PL/1 :D

German

And I can get by on holiday in Greek (prefer to see this written - my maths A levels have their uses for decoding it!), Spanish, Portuguese, Italian...

... nearly forgot my few word of Welsh!

I can cope with US English... but don't you just HATE that phrase!

VB/A

PHP

JSP

ASP

a bit of Java

Favourite...PHP

Oh and if a user tries to get technical with me I am fluent in "geek speak" and that usually shuts them up... :)

But I do agree that I was unsure whether the question was about spoken or computer languages...

I think you've missed a point here - we're in the General Chat section of a Computing Forum, where most posts should be assumed to have nothing to do with computing. Arguably a computing post in this section is off-topic.

If you were asking specifically about programming languages maybe you should have put it in the Coding section or made your question more explicit?

The BOFH makes use of this -

DUMMY MODE - The mode that users change into when confronted with technical detail which they can't process. DUMMY MODE ON = BRAIN OFF, FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS WITHOUT QUESTION.

And it is a great way of thoroughly confusing users :D.

Same here - I'm not exactly sure what "dam-eh" means, but Sensei seemed to say it to me an awful lot... I'm disgracefully bad at spoken languages, managing to scrape an E at GCSE French after 7 years of study and have completly forgotten the little Japanese I squeezed in to my head via a course at a college a few years ago. I was rather proud of my ability to read the descriptive plaques on the tourist trail around Paris, mind.

Listing the computer languages you "know" is not the same as most languages will be Turing-complete and therefore equivilent and therefore very similar in concept to each other, and experience with libraries and APIs is what counts when people ask for someone who "knows", say, Java or Visual Basic. You should pick a computer language because of its suitibility to a given problem, and you should be able to switch between them as needed. I have, at various times in the past, programmed in BASIC, Pascal, 6502 / 6800 / 80x86 Assembly, C, C++, Scheme, Prolog, Modula-2, Postscript, VBA, VB, Perl, Python, PHP, JavaScript and ActionScript. I've also been required to create my own 6800 virtual machine, an adventure game writing language (written in Scheme) and for my undergraduate thesis I wrote a language optimised for multi-threaded programming, POOPL (but, rather unfortunatly, implemented it in Java, so it didn't run very fast...).

if i had to pick one, then probably perl. Although i don't know enough of other defacto programming languages they teach you at uni like c, c++ and java to have a 'favourite'. I kind of gave up on them after graduating.

i must admit i did like the look of that white space programming language that someone posted a link to, in the top 10 most bizarre languages thread. Especially if it means not having to do any programming. ;)
