We just happen to have a "spare" server and I suggested the idea of making a local games server.

Before I do this... has anyone tried it before and had any problems with parents or other staff?

What are the rules on licensing? Is it possible to just buy one game (Unreal Tournament GOTY edition for example) and play it on 16 or so machines?

Or if we install it once on this server and then use Terminal Services to access the server and only allow the game to run in the terminal services session? would they be able to set up and LAN game with terminal services?

And just any other views or information on the idea? Would be much appreciated

Thanks, Andy

terminal services won't work. End Of.

Steam license is good, if you can get the ports opened.

Watch out of the PEG rating.

Look out for bulk discounts on old ish games.

Any free games?

So if I wanted Unreal Tournament GOTY Ed. I'd have to buy one, or one license, for every machine its going to run on?

We have an internal and external server for multiplay gaming, the internal server is only ever used for basic development and is only accessible by the appropriate student user groups (and during specific times) for classes where 'online gaming' is covered in the courses modules.

The external server is used for CS:S, DoD and CTF2 Steam games but is only fired up outside of office hours (and is always password protected), we also run a 24 hour TeamSpeak2 server for our clan members to keep in touch :)

All hardware is ex-production server kit, home-made too! The internal box is a Dual AMD MP 1.7 Ghz with 3 GB RAM and the external box is a Intel P4 HT 2.2 Ghz with 4GB RAM running Win2k8.

Best bet is to look for all the free games, anything that is open source if Okay - We do have a number of copies of Unreal Tourny but to be honest the students are usually more interested in making their own maps then testing them out!

You may end up with parents being concerned about the use of 'violent games'...

You would also need a licence for each copy - I'd be amazed if you got this running with a single copy of terminal services.

Try Paintball 2.0. It's free and no-one dies :)

I run NetPanzer on a bunch of dual booting boxes (WinXp/Edubuntu local login)

Good fun isometric tank battle game, no resources just attack and conquer, if you lose all your units.. you get 9 new ones to start again. The kids love it.

It's available through Apt and there's a Windows version too. Usually get one of the workstations hosting and the rest to join. I've avoided putting it on Windows so then they can only access it with my permission.

Just put restrictive NTFS permissions on the game exe then use a special games account and change the password after every session.

also look at trackmania united nations (or something from that series) as they did a free full game version.

Also consider just using game demos, as the kids will most likely get bored of the game in about a month anyway.

Heres a few games which may be free (they are free to you and me but possibly not schools);

Track Mania Nations - my current fav game

Quake 2 engine - iirc you need to find the textures

Enemy Territory - another one of my fav games

Or maybe they get bored because all they get to play is demo's?! ;)

we are starting this after half term (ish) have a look at americas army.

its free and you can run the server stuff in school as well

might be slightly contentious being a US army rectuitment tool but chances are the kids wont be able to tell the difference between that and Call of Duty.

Multiplayer games aren't really limited much in demo terms as you can always download the user created maps to extend the map lists....

Quake Arena is what we're planning on trying.

Had to edit;

  • Taunts - No Swearing
  • Skins - No Semi Naked Spider Ladies
  • Blood - No Blood
  • Flags - To Our School Logo :D

We are as yet to try it out yet - but we have up to a possible of 60 machines to use for an after school LAN Event. Should be really good fun - especially since me and my fellow technician have some great even battles when it's 1v1 :)

I remember a couple of years ago when I was a ICT Technician at another school...........we had a spare Toshiba Desktop computer laying around, I chucked some extra RAM in it and turned it into a Unreal Tournament 99 Server :D

I had about 4 or 5 UT Servers running off it, Capture the Flag, Death Match etc it was wicked, used to get about 30 kids on there after school and kick there bums :D

sadly......it did come to an end.......:hand:
