Thought you should all be aware of the above website that you might like to filter. Explanation below:

 

"1Cup1Coffee.com is a website designed for playing games in school or at work. Once you choose a screen resolution cup, you will be taken to what looks like a Windows XP folder. In the folder, there are word documents and powerpoint files which are games in disguise. When you click on one of the files, that game will load and you will be able to play once it is done loading. If a teacher/co-worker/boss walks by, simply press backspace and the game will exit back to the "Work Folder."

Very clever, our kids haven't found this yet as I have just done an audit of websites visited and it doesn't show up.

 

Backspace doesn't work but the back button on the browser does. So I guess it is fairly quick to get back to the "my documents folder".

Honestly what is wrong with you people. It bothers me to see how you guys can get pleasure from blocking harmless sites. If you guys made your classes interesting and less dull maybe students wouldn't be going around looking for sites to pass time. Even if you do block this site there are hundreds and thousands that are accessible and unknown to teachers and such.

Welcome Davenator. Please note we are (for the majority) NOT teachers, but network managers, technicians and (some) ICT teaching staff plus an assorment of govt, LEA and corporate types. We do not block sites for pleasure, but as a LEGAL reuirement to keeping content available from the internet to schools relevent to teaching and learning. A school is not a place for playing games on computers, indeed if you tried that in teh 'real' working world you would soon find out what the word 'fired' is for.

Whilst there are 'thousands of sites' like that one (mostly with duplicate content) we do keep blocking them on either a local (we find them, we block them) level or at LEA level where more throurough RBC filtering systems block them out due to their catagory type. We don't do this becasue we find it fun, but be becasue it is a legal requirment of our job, set by the govt and the various education depts.

I don't worry about the actual games so much, but more about the websites they are on and what code nasties could be hidden in the webpages, most of them are riddled with advertising and popups and are not the sort of sites we want to be letting through our system.

ya know i agree with some things and not with others i feel that these games that kids are playing (especially the ones that are completely harmless) are ok. what are kids going to do when all of their work is finished and they have nothing else to do? huh? well i tell you, the most probable thing would be for them to talk and jib jab untill class is over, raise a ruckuss, and annoy everyone until they can simply go to the next class and do the exact same thing. what im saying is to all of you "corporate types" is get a life beyond shutting down games and work on shutting down more probable things such as porn sites which is what we have trouble with today!!!

of course, im not saying all games are okay. games like strategy games or the ever popular

"tower defense" games which actually stimulate kids' minds into thinking harder on a solution to a specific problem, while yet they are still having fun. although the games where you must kill the zombie or kick a ball many many feet which are stupid and mind melting. so in turn, playing these games would keep children quiet while classwork is over and also stimulate the brain.

The sites that these games reside on are usually the type that have inappropriate advertising or worse.

 

Children go to school to learn, the computers are a learning tool, if it gets compromised by malware then it cant be used for learning.

We don't have trouble with Porn here either; Porn and very inapropriate stuff rarely makes it past the LEA filters. If any's likely to, I usually hear about it here first, block it locally, then inform the LEA - hence the value of a thread like this.

well im surprised to hear a reply from all of you and i appreciate your constructiveness. well if any of you do not have trouble with porn why are you worried about it? im not trying to be rude and im not trying to complain all i want is to understand why you cant do a thourough check on gamesites that offer a challenge to the brains of young minds and set them out so they can be played on. of course there are advertisements but they can be blocked all pop-ups can be blocked its not that hard. thank you for reading and the feed back i appreciate it i just dont understand where you gentlemen and ladies are coming from.

Usually because it's an ever-moving target, and we have to keep on top of it or it catches us by surprise - this goes for pron, games sites, proxy tunnels, etc, etc.

 

im not trying to be rude and im not trying to complain all i want is to understand why you cant do a thourough check on gamesites that offer a challenge to the brains of young minds and set them out so they can be played on. of course there are advertisements but they can be blocked all pop-ups can be blocked its not that hard. thank you for reading and the feed back i appreciate it i just dont understand where you gentlemen and ladies are coming from.

I think that's probably true for everybody here, we are all on the go all day just keeping things working, and don't have time for luxuries like this. Which is a shame, I would love to spend more time with students and less with metal, it just isn't feasible.

We are looking at doing this for our VLE, so that during "free time" the kids will be allowed to play on an "approved" list of games, i may also have some form of student forum which will decide whether certain games should be allowed or not as per our pupil engagement commitment.

thank you also, and that is a great idea. as long as the games are sorts of challenging. and games approved by kids their own age would definately help as long as those kids have no trouble in school.
