Myself (the NM) and 1 full time tech I find i rarely have time to do anything other than techie repair tasks instead of managing the network. We have just had some consultancy work (network penetration testing, information risk assessments etc) done by a company working for the LEA and they were shocked at the lack of IT support staff for the size of the system and amount of users. They recommended in their report that we should have a an absolute minimum, 4 full time technicians (no chance ) They also stated that we should be looking at similar technical support staff levels as those in the admin department.... 15+ Makes you think.

TBH I personally think as i said just now, if you have a well run network you don't need to many people anyway. Tamarside Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 We're a community college with around 1 250 students and 180 staff. We support three primaries at present, with another one joining us soon. In total we support about 1000 computers (desktop/laptop mix), 16 servers, 85 interactive whiteboards and around 95 projectors, with 80-ish printers thrown in for good measure. We have a site-wide WiFi network (some 50 WAP's) on a DMZ that is set to prioritise VoIP traffic over normal data and we support the VoIP setup, including the WinMo handsets. Additionally we have several WAP's that are on the "proper" network dotted around. The department consists of me and four technicians. We have a lot of automation, but in some respects we're still very primitive. Sadly documentation is nowhere near as detailed and accurate as I'd like it to be, but we've made good progress.
edcirh Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 NOR 816 pupils, 70 staff, 194 PCs/25 laptops running M$ XP Pro/W2K, 3 servers (W2K3), Curr & Admin networks, 8 switches, 3 WAPs, all the usual s/w, c45 IWBs, a myriad of different printers, and all of the other peripherals you'd expect. Just me, on a 0.6 term-time+3 weeks...
glennda Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 yr 7 -yr 12 (soon to be yr13) 1400 pupils, 130 staff 400+ computers, bout 100 laptops on curriculum network, 20 computers on admin. 18 non networked in music. 60 printers, IWB in everyclassroom (approx 100) along with ceiling mounted projectors. pretty much support most things with a plug! 2 techs

sahmeepee Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 Somebody produce graphs! I wonder which is a more significant drain on resources: the number of users or the number of PCs. I usually assume a laptop costs about twice as much time as a desktop unless it's living in a cupboard 364 days a year.

Here: 1250 students 150 teaching staff 90 Iwb's & projectors 2 mobile projectors 500+ workstations 200 laptops/netbooks Lots & lots & lots of kit for podcasting/green screen movie making/funky stuff Moodle, Exchange, Terminal servers, etc etc We have: 1 x FT NM (me) 1 x FT Tech 1 x FT Web dev (totally focussed on Moodle, website & other web based initiatives)
mrbios Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 Secondary School with a 6th form - estimate of about 1200 users around 200 staff almost one laptop per staff member (give or take the odd few) i think last tally on computers was around 650-700 desktops (we're getting close to 1000 inc laptops) virtual servers and 8 lans totalling about 25 servers but only about 8 or 9 are physical boxes Projector and IWB in every teaching room 1 network manager and 2 technicians - we do have a 6th former that helps us out though

CraigM Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 In my current job, we have: 1130 students give or take a few, high school so Grades 8-12, or Forms 2-6 in UK style. 75 staff, some part time About 170 computers 40 odd Smartboards and projectors Floating laptop and projector My colleague and I as full time network admins 1 teacher above us who is in general charge of IT We are getting towards the point where we can be proactive instead of reactive, though not quite there yet. The network we inherited was in a shocking state, unmanaged switches, no diagrams, no documentation etc... We did a major overhaul in December which is helping us to move forward now. Sometime I feel that things are moving so fast that we need a 3rd team member to help out with things until we have managed to automate more processeses.
Fuzzz Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Our students are between 12 and 18 y/o. We have 820 students, about 80 staff. We have 130 workstations, 10 servers (W2k3, Exchange, IIS, etc. etc.) I'm the only technical person in the school, so I also 'do everything with a plug'.

Projectors in all rooms but not IWB's 22 physical servers including 4 exchange 6 file servers sims securus linux web hosts, 2 x linux KVM servers hosting 20+ VM's (some are just xp boxes for staff to use VPN) We have about 1550 kids plus 150+ staff theres 3 techs and a network manager who does all sorts including managing the builders!

(5+ Years) It helps a lot if the staff have a basic understanding of IT. Most staff here are scared of IT and come running even if a simple error message appears on their computer. Some staff are patient with IT fixes, other staff want it done ASAP! So in my experience it depends on the staff at the School. Parminder

Wils86 Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 Our stats, secondary school with growing 6th form Around 780 students 120 staff 750 PC's & Laptops 6 Servers (all physical, 1x exchange etc) IP CCTV on 5 dvrs (rough guess 54 cameras) projectors in every classroom 50 smart boards For loan 3 projectors, 8 laptops, 3 digital ca,eras, 4 video cameras and probably more junk lying down the back of the cabinet
