Hi all, One of the students in my school created a Google Presentation using the 'Wave' theme. All of the slides show the theme background when editing, but only the first slide shows the theme background when presenting. This happens using both Chrome and Firefox. In IE, the slides show the theme background(!) but the transitions/animations don't work. I have downloaded the presentation as a .pptx and run the slideshow, and the theme background displays on every slide. I then re-uploaded the .pptx to Drive, converted it back to a Google presentation and am having the same problem, only the first slide shows the theme background! I have applied a different theme, with the same result. Re-applying the 'Wave' theme gets the same result. I have made sure to click the 'apply to all slides' button frequently, but nothing changes. I've posted this on Google's product forums last week but haven't received any response as yet, so any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks. Ian

Hi. We have recently had a new windows server 2008 server in the school which we are using as a WDS server. While experimenting with unattended installation using a sysprep.inf file I encountered a problem. The file works but it will not accept our volume license key. The error I receive is "The product ID you entered is not valid". Before I captured the image I run sysprep using the "Use minisetup" and "reseal" options. I'm thinking that the installation is somehow become an OEM install and is asking for an OEM key. Any ideas? Thanks

nope, our kids couldn't spell telnet, let alone use it! The admin passwords were set by County when the switches were installed, there aren't any shortcuts to the admin web interface anywhere, & we've not got any pupils that are that up with IT that they'd realise there was a web interface to some networking devices... That's Plan A for tomorrow morning...

The cabinet is right above a teacher's desk - one of our stricter/most respected teachers - so I've no worries about pupils getting to it. The switches are "limited managed", whatever that means (my guess is cheap!)... I've tried different patch cables as well...

Hmm, that's a thought - I'll try bouncing the switch before anyone gets in tomorrow just in case the auto-sense/auto-negotiate have got their knickers in a twist - I'd not really given much thought to the switch, working on the basis that it was new in in February and every other port was working fine. Not convinced that the reboot will fix things, though, because I've patched the room into the other switch in that cabinet & still get no connection. Still, stranger things have happened... Sorry, I should have said Yep I have, & I'm still getting no connection...

Nope. There's been a fair bit of work in there just recently, but a) nothing electrical/electronic & b) nothing before the network connection initally went down & we had the wall box replaced. Yep, no connection at all. I've even checked that the NICs haven't randomly become disabled (which has happened to me before!) but they're quite happy, just sat there, smugly displaying "network cable unplugged". I wonder if the County Network team have performed their ritual sacrifices to the Networking Gods this month...

From the PC to the wall socket c.14m (I know, I know, but teachers will insist on moving things around!), and from the Wall socket to the switch c.34m...

The network connection in one of my classrooms dropped several weeks back. As the classroom was barely used, it wasn't a high priority. Anyway, doing the diagnostics pointed to the wall socket being faulty. That's now been resolved but I've still got no network connection in the room. I've bunged a LAN tester on (nothing fancy, just continuity/wire order) and it shows that the cabling is fine from the plug going into the back of the PC all the way up to the plug going into the switch (i.e. all wires in the cabling connected & in the correct order). The network is Cat5e (& I use 568B wiring order everywhere if that makes a difference). I've tried 4 different ports on 2 different switches, 2 different PCs, & new cables on either side of the run from classroom to switch, but still get no joy. No life on the NIC LEDs or the switch LEDs. Nothing. Nada. Nix. Zilch. Not a sausage. Any ideas? Ian

Hi webman, I've tried putting the / at the start of option 67, tried the paths to the 3 pxelinux.0 files I've got on the server, and also tried prefixing the root path with the server name, but still no joy. Hi David, I don't have a spare switch I could use, or second NICs for the servers, I haven't been given my budget yet so can't buy the kit, and the Head wants this working last week!

and I'm getting really frustrated now. We run a Windows network in the school, with one 2K3 Server serving all our PCs. I want to build a Linux thin-client solution for the new library we've just had (for many reasons). I've built 2 servers (1 root server, 1 application server) as per instructions here, here, and here. The client would pick up the Linux server, but then (after much tweaking with network settings/dhcp configs/nbd-server configs/etc, it got to the point where it would ignore the static IP addresses I'd allocated & pick one from my Win dhcp server. So I then uninstalled dhcp3-server on my Linux server, and tweaked dhcp on my Windows server (instructions here, dhcp settings attached). Now, I'm stuck with the client requesting an IP address & just being ignored by the dhcp server. I know that it's going to be me missing a tiny config setting somewhere, but I'm out of ideas (&so's Google!). Any help you could give me would be great. Many thanks Ian

After replying to sted I had another mooch around & the sub-directory (of the main share) I store my MSIs in was set up as a share in it's own right, with full control for 'Everyone'. However, I've added read access for 'Everyone' to the main share permissions & it works!!!!! WoooooHooooooooo!!! Many thanks for your help chaps...

Sorry - was juggling several dozen things yesterday & having brain-f4rts all over the place... Full control for school admin/staff/pupil security groups.

No, the Source is definitely a UNC path. Not sure what you mean by share permissions?

(Thanks pete, I'd forgotten about remotely viewing!) I've checked a couple of PCs & the Event Viewer Application Log shows: "Event ID: 102 The install of application Compatibility Pack for the 2007 Office system from policy DJC - MS Office 2007 Compatibility Pack Install failed. The error was : The installation source for this product is not available. Verify that the source exists and that you can access it." A quick search of the Interwebs & the MS Support Knowledgebase gave me this article. I then tried the following: Changed the Security Filtering on the GPO to 'Domain Computers' (instead of 'Authenticated Users'); Explicitly added read/execute permissions for 'Domain Computers' to the share/subdirectories/files (read/execute was already given to 'All Users'). Rebooted the machine, and still got the above error. Then tried a "gpupdate /force /boot" but got the same result.

Not yet - the rooms I've tried to roll it out to have been fully booked so far this morning, so I'll have a look at lunchtime - is there anything specific I should be looking out for?

Hi guys/gals/etc, I'm trying to deploy this beast across the network using GP & it's not working for me! I've d/loaded the software & extracted the files to a shared directory (the same one I use for all of my software deployment). I've created a GPO to run the install as Assigned software (exactly the same as the other software I've deployed). I've checked the permissions on the MSI directory/files & they're exactly the same as everything else in that folder. However, when I reboot the machines the "installing managed software" messages appear but skip straight over the OCP installation (exactly as it does if the software is already installed). I can log on to a machine and enter \\servername\share\subdir\O12Conv.msi in the Run box & the OCP installs with no problem. I've even tried following the suggestions at the bottom of this page but it just doesn't seem to want to install when the machine boots up!! Aaaaaarrrrrrgggggggghhhhhhh!!!!!!!! Any suggestions as to where else I can look?? Cheers, Ian

NOR 816 pupils, 70 staff, 194 PCs/25 laptops running M$ XP Pro/W2K, 3 servers (W2K3), Curr & Admin networks, 8 switches, 3 WAPs, all the usual s/w, c45 IWBs, a myriad of different printers, and all of the other peripherals you'd expect. Just me, on a 0.6 term-time+3 weeks...

I've a sneaking suspicion that the answers I get for this will include lots of :rofl:s but here goes... Is there a way I can set each machine's BIOS to enable wake-on-lan via some sort of batch-file/script/whatever, so that I don't have to visit each of 180+ machines in 80+ different rooms individually? We've not had our budget set for this year yet, so I'd prefer freeware if possible. Many thanks.

We're using AB Tutor Control here - it allows you to control almost as much as Impero lets you control but at a % of the cost. I've created groups (password protected, of course!) in each of our 5 IT suites so the teachers in there can only see the machines in that particular room. The client is installed silently via GP (the same .msi is used for both teacher & student machines but if you push it out via GP it defaults to silently installing the client). Setting up system monitoring is a doddle using their Policy facility & you can set it up so that it either takes a screenshot of what the student is doing at the time of the keyword infringement (which you provide as a 'blacklist' of words to look out for) or for it to record nn mins of video after the keyword is detected . One possible downside is that it works via keystroke monitoring, so I've had a couple of screenshots taken when someone has typed "...t wat..." quite legitimately (eg "hot water") . It also has the ability to share screens around classrooms, let teacher take control of PCs/monitor thumbnails of the whole class, etc. & they do a free trial download... PM me if you need more information.

I was taken on as an ICT Tech, just moved on to SCP16-21 (£16,230-£18,882) but on 0.6 term-time + 3wks, so roughly £9700 pro rata. Just me in the school looking after NOR 816 pupils, 70 staff, 170 PCs/25 laptops running M$ XP Pro/W2K, 3 servers (W2K3), 5 switches, 3 WAPs, all the usual s/w, c15 IWBs, a myriad of different printers, and all of the other peripherals. I'm currently going through an exercise to try to get my school to recognise that a) they need someone full-time, and b) that I'm an actual NM, not a Tech - on this one I'm not worried about pay-scales, just having the recognition of the job I actually do. Not sure how successful I'll be - county announced at the end of last week that they're "looking at the option of" a phased closure of our school starting 2011...

Sorry for being tardy everyone, but things have been a bit busy at work recently. During my look-see, I did check out several of your suggestions, but I also had my goal-posts moved (surprisingly enough!). My HoICT came to me with a requirement for a tool which would allow him to do things he'd been asking the previous incumbent for for over six years apparently. With this new criteria in mind, we've plumped for AB Tutor Control - it satisfies both my HoICT's and my requirements (although I am going to make a couple of suggestions to AB Consulting re their inventory functionality). I must admit that I do like AB Tutor Control (& since installing it my ICT teachers have gone a little power-mad! ), and that I liked the transparency on their web-site regards to purchasing (you only pay for the "teacher" install) as well as their pricing structure (GBP140 per "teacher" install if buying less than 10!). From a support perspective, the product comes as a .msi and if you use GPO to push it out, it only installs the client module silently . Until the inventory module gives me *exactly* what I want (& yes, I know I'm picky) I'm also using Spiceworks (& love the helpdesk ticket bit) & the M$ software inventory plug-in thingy as well...
