Ugh - Not comfortable with how much info teachers can access on the teacher app (On non school devices) - Not something want to push them towards (Not should we be asking them to use their personal devices to take registers on...) 5tu Posted May 5 Posted May 5 Have today discovered that Bromcom delete posts they don't like from community.bromcom.com. Seems their moderation team might be larger than the MIS development team!! 2
Synkrox Posted May 5 Posted May 5 Probably would have been fine if it weren't for a customer that dared to refresh the page.
TheRobins Posted May 5 Posted May 5 We are writing to let you know that we are currently experiencing a platform performance issue that is affecting all areas of the system including morning registration for our customers. The only current known workaround is for teachers to use the Teacher app to record registration. We appreciate this is may not be viable for schools to implement at short notice. We understand how critical this is to the start of your school day and we want to assure you that we have already identified the cause and our technical team is actively working to resolve it as quickly as possible. We will provide a further update shortly, and we will keep you informed throughout. We sincerely apologise for the disruption this is causing. Kind regards, Osman Erener Chief Operating Officer, Bromcom 1

That's one of the reason's I'm a little uncomfy with it too - that and it being on personal devices, being used in class by teachers at a time when mobile phone usage is questionable! When everything is back I was going to see if it's possible to limit teacher app usage to the school's public IP to help counter the first part a little.
psynegy Posted May 5 Posted May 5 If you haven't already - I would highly recommend setting up scheduled reports to run in the early hours of each morning that land in a shared mailbox with the blank registers for the day. I have found the best way to do this was have a scheduled report per period (so you can easily print period X) and then also have a report that lists each class by period with the location of the class as that is not included on the blank register report. We then have staff write the location onto the registers by hand before they go out by student runner. Big PITA obviously - but with Bromcom as it stands at the moment - perhaps a necessary evil. Can share more details later(?!) if anyone would like. I think the class/period/location report was a custom one. 3

If you could share more deets on this mate it would be good, not only in case of any Bromcom nonsense, but in general if all else fails we have up to date essentials without people needing to think about it. This happens every day for us but it's a manual job at the moment (SIMS) so if we could automate the sending and printing of these reports that would be super cool
Synkrox Posted May 5 Posted May 5 I use power automate to automate the data of students and classes into a single excel spreadsheet every night. This has filters for classes, drop down options for registration marks and dinner choices all ready to go. On those alarmingly regular days when Bromcom is down we send the spreadsheet link out to all staff to complete electronically so it's all in one place and easy for attendance and kitchen to get the info. Clear it down at the end of the day then it good to go again. Got this set up during the recent chaos and it's made everything as slick as I think it can be.

I might look to do something similar...!
machy Posted May 5 Posted May 5 Based on our current progress, our engineering team are hoping to be able to release a fix this afternoon. We recognise this means the system will be affected for a significant duration of the school day and we are deeply sorry for that. **We want to assure you that the cause has been fully identified and our team is fully focused on restoring service as quickly as possible. ** In the meantime, the Teacher App can be used to record registration where this is feasible for your school. We will notify you as soon as we have a confirmed deployment window and again once service has been fully restored. We are very sorry for the continued disruption.

Can confirm. Not exactly an ideal work around. Most of our users are fine, only a few have reported it. I added cover permission, it started working for an affected user. We will never know the cause - there will be a vague statement, lessons learned, never happen again etc.

I think all you can do is the global IP setting. Which for us would mean it would break school laptops off site, unless we found a way to route all Bromcom traffic back over the VPN If it had the ability to interrogate the device, like M365 Office apps do (To check for rooted devices, ensure a device PIN is set & force an app pin if not) - Or lock down to just school owned devices then maybe it would be ok, but right now it's just a GDPR nightmare IMO. When we've banned phones for students, it then feels a bit wrong asking staff to use their personal devices & logon to the school WiFi It's not a solution. 2

simpsonj Posted May 5 Posted May 5 Bromcom update: (MONITORING FIX) Major Incident: Issues withs some aspects of the MIS not loading. 05/05 13:15 Our team has deployed a fix for the performance issues experienced today and we are actively monitoring its impact. Initial results indicate that the issue is fully resolved, however we will continue to monitor the system closely throughout the afternoon and provide a further update later on system stability. In the meantime, if you notice any ongoing problems, a cache refresh should help — simply press Ctrl + F5 in your browser to clear it and reload the page. We will keep you updated as soon as we have more to share.

Even with patch after patch. 9 hours ago, TheRobins said: I can never ever remember any issues, or having to keep a copy of paper registers "just in case" .... Me neither, only when it was a 3rd party issue with the provider / CAPITA / ESS themselves. This is 'the cloud' after all though - we were promised near 100% uptime with few issues as as other 'cloud' systems.
Jaan Posted May 6 Posted May 6 i suspect we're going to have to move away in the future. Our SLT team isn't happy with performance and reliability.

KSCSIT Posted May 6 Posted May 6 Has anyone looked at https://www.wonde.com/products/data-recovery/ at all? (Or already have it) - Looking at it as a potential option to mantain some access to data in the event of another outage.
