First day back, what has, or is, going to break?

For many of you, today is either an inset day or the first day of term, and all of the hard work you have put in over the summer is about to meet reality.

So, what has broken against the tidal wave of keyboard destroyers for you? Or has everythign held fast and worked exactly as planned?

My last place of work has an inset on the 2nd of September, Year 7 and sixth form in on the 3rd September, and all students in on the 4th of September, having broken up on the 19th of July.

 

Whoever has my old job now, I wish them well.

I was gonna' say, I thought most schools round 'ere went back next week. Wishing away the holidays! :)

 

Bah! I really did get my dates wrong! Apologies to anyone who now feels the pressure of the clock ticking with last minute work.

Inset tomorrow (28th) students back Thursday 29th. One day later than the usual Tuesday after bank holiday rush so it’s been nice today to get some last minute jobs fixed.

 

Inset day is the worst day of the year. The amount of requests you get that have been sat on for 6-10 weeks is ridiculous.

My checklist for this:

 

netsh winhttp show proxy

 

The bypass list is critical!

 

No web access, with 503 errors? Make sure that the current email cert is bound to the Default and site in IIS. The Microsoft Exchange default cert can be bound to the Exchange Back End.

 

Mail delivery not working through the server after a restart? Some of the services required for Exchange don't restart with the server - try manually restarting anything that's not running but should be (Automatic).

 

Check if the certs are valid. Renew them if not, then restart the server (often, just restarting Exchange isn't enough).

Not back till Monday and everything working fine so far. Just done a classroom sweep to make sure PCs power up and interactive boards have the latest firmware. I swear the people of Chernobyl left their homes tidier at evacuation than some of the teachers have left their workstations.

The hypervisor at one site bricked itself over the weekend following (I think) some spectacularly failed Windows Updates, taking down literally that entire site. Took most of yesterday to resolve, and involved fiddling with the system maintenance switch to reset BIOS, and then again to reset BIOS password (as apparently that was never handed over)... fun Monday!

 

Luckily, no students until next week!

My Mystic Meg prediction..

1) Desks will have been randomly moved to a completely different place, breaking any leads/ports nearby. Extra points for leads either a) laid across the floor as a trip hazard or b) so tight you can play a tune on them.

2) Remote controls will have been "stolen" (by the classroom next door), or are "broken" (batteries have been removed - bonus points if they are inserted. but the wrong way round).

3) The hall AV will have had everything randomly unplugged/plugged, with some bits never to be seen again, although an ancient broken radio mike missing for 10 years will materialise.

We had a summer let to an organisation (that shall remain nameless) two years in a row. They made endless demands on our time, this despite saying that they will not need our support when booking the let.

 

After both lets (both years) kit had been moved from room to room without our kmowledge, there was a lot of damage, and a lot on missing kit (mouses, remotes etc)

 

I guess most of the tampering was down to rgwe students on the couses, but I'm sure that some of it was "well intentioned" guest staff making changes to suit their own needs without restoring the kit when they had finished.

Aah, I remember those days! Summer lets, each week a different group. Equipment would get moved be group 1, then again by group 2, and so on...fun and games trying to find where everything ended up :rolleyes:

I'm sure that AV glitch in the main hall that we've been unable to replicate all summer will come back just as the head's giving her inset presentation.

OneDrive client not logging in automatically as it would appear some members of staff have setup a live.com account using their school e-mail address! So, it doesn't know which one to use so they manually have to select the 'Work or School' account.

 

Work round is to get the live.com account deleted, or somehow change the e-mail address associated with it! Grrrr.... Why is it ok to use your school work account to setup an account so your son can use their X-Box !!!
