Is Christmas the best time of year to be working in IT?

Hello all,

 

A genuine question for you all, is it everyone elses favourite time of the year being at IT technician too when it's christmas time? I think listening to christmas songs in the office, and making your office a tad christmassy, steph from HR giving you home made brownies or buns because you turned her computer off and on, or the way that you can wear an IT christmas jumper that the odd IT teacher may understand.

 

All jokes aside, and i'm a very festive person, but I think working in IT especially at christmas time is the best of the best, and because it's getting close to christmas, all the staff won't report much! I hope it snows this year though, love standing at the office window watching it fall waiting for my outlook to ping a notification of an early finish!

 

What's your thoughts?

Very hectic time of year for me.

 

Since Covid, we now film all our Christmas performances so that basically means running around everywhere making sure all year groups are filmed, edited, and uploaded so it can go out before Christmas. And then making sure no one that can't be filmed isnt in the middle of the shots!

 

Last day Christmas party is when I truly can relax. I don't do any work over Christmas as we are closed and the break is short anyway so once we hit the last day of term, bring on the Christmas holidays!

Christmas usually consists of me running around the classrooms and ripping down the tinsel that's touching the interactive displays when the emails come through saying 'HELP my mouse isn't working!' Either that or browsing the staff profiles to see what torrent site Mrs Bloggs has used to download the latest kids xmas film

I still have PTSD from too many years in retail compounded by too many years having to look after aged parents who refused to move closer to us. Had a break last year, but I think Mme LeMarchand and I will have to go and look after her mother this year. She's another refusenik who hasn't really got anything wrong apart from a serious case of attention seeking.

I think everyone loves that day before the christmas holidays! I think it's the only time all staff but site team don't work! What a great day, I truly cannot wait.

This really has made me chuckle we have all ours on discs still, just waiting for multiple staff needing the same film at once, or walking past a class watching a christmas film on YouTube at 360p and blurry

Work's okay at that time, but I'm usually run into the ground by that point as my last full week off will have been in May.

 

I don't think I've been to a staff Christmas do for 10 years - they always clash with training, and as coach and athlete first that comes above drinking overpriced beer with colleagues!

Echoing what other have said here but work tends to stay at the same level however, my regular duties do get superseded by more festive jobs. Accompanying our choir to sing carols, organising Santa & reindeer visit etc....

 

I do enjoy updating our school wallpaper and putting a Santa hat on our logo, trying to add something new each year. Even better this year with our MDM for our iPads means they don't miss out on the festive background. Oh...it's the little things

No, I hate Christmas (issues from years ago) and I'm not a bah humbug about it. I let people enjoy it and I spend time with family and friends. They just know not to get me presents or be over the top about it.

 

Best time of year for me is around June/July time. Planning the summer projects etc.

 

Although now I've moved out of a school. Not sure when will be best time!

For me, I'm REALLY looking forward to Christmas, and seeing how it works in my office. I'm fresh out of retail, and this is my first Christmas outside of that hell-hole in about 15 years. Aside from anything else, I get a week off while the school is closed!! Beats finishing at 5:30pm on Christmas Eve and back into store at 8am on Boxing day!!! I can actually spend time with family this year and relax.

It's not retail induced pain and it's not an enjoyable time (apart from family). It might be enjoyable this year. [emoji846] but experience is it's not.

It's just another day for me, it's no longer Christmas for me, the only thing that is worth it for me is spending time with my friends and their family, eating and drinking loads.

 

As for work, I'd rather work through the night, less people around!

I do miss some aspects of Christmas in a Primary School now I am no longer at one.

 

I used to love the nativity play and the random variations from the script… Mary bringing baby Jesus on stage dangling by the leg… the Shepherds walloping each other with their crooks… you never knew what was going to happen

 

I also love a school carol service.

 

In a Primary School there is absolutely no doubt that Father Christmas exists and watching the Year 6 kids making absolutely sure that nobody spoiled things for the younger children was heartwarming.

 

My workload didn’t change and at times it got more difficult trying to do things round what happened in school, but it was always a good time of year as far as I was concerned.

Christmas at work is not really that much different to any other time of year for me to be honest. I shall enjoy the week off. We're toying with the idea of taking our caravan and going away this year to get away from it all.

 

I used to have a timeshare many moons ago and looked forward to Christmas Day and Boxing day on the beach in the Canaries.

For me, the best thing about Christmas is that EVERYBODY IS OFF - Meaning I don't have to worry about supporting anyone on site, dealing with contractors wanting to decorate/make changes & no one is bothering to work remotely either.

So for me (I'm full time) it's the one actual holiday I can put my feetup entirely if I want to. Usually I find it difficult to entirely switch off otherwise.

The frenzied ramp down towards the last day of term is generally evil for us.

 

However, the first day of the Christmas break is excellent and we can get on with installations and projects right up to when the school closes just before Christmas Eve. Dress down, no interruptions, bit of mince pie. Bliss!

Christmas was an awful time of year for me in a previous role. Filming 5 different productions, editing the videos, making DVDs, taking the orders, counting the orders out, mass producing the discs, taking complaint from a parent about the order they never made never arriving so making a new copy and basically giving it away free... arguing with the senior leadership that i didn't need to film the same production with the same cast twice...

 

Then doing all the other jobs you're supposed to as well as creating a Christmas themed display for the front of school screen, and being a cinema technician for the films in class whilst arguing with teachers as to why the streaming site they wanted to use was blocked...

 

Awful time back then. None of that in the current role though!
