Steve101 Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 I wouldn't supply anything less than an i5 for a teacher. 1
FN-GM Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 Thats quite a low spec. I would be looking at a minimum of a 10th gen I5 with 16GB Ram. I was ordering devices with 8GB RAM back in 2014. 1
synaesthesia Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 Although Dynabook's support/after sales has been good to my infant school, out of 6 devices supplied last year, we're on our 4th failure. Same model as above. 1
Primus Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 That CPU is really weak, it's going to struggle when brand new. 1
Aprice Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 That CPU is really weak, it's going to struggle when brand new. Yeah, I'd also be looking at i5 8GB RAM 256GB SSD or better 1
jthompson Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 Ditto on i5 rather than i3. RAM you can always double later on. 1
FN-GM Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 Ditto on i5 rather than i3. RAM you can always double later on. Be carefully. It’s more and more common for RAM to be soldered onto the bird. 2

jmak Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 The generation of chips appears to make quite a difference. The 12th gen i5s seen to outperform the 11th gen i7 in mine. 10th gen is there years old now - given how long we generally keep laptops in education, I always try and go for the most recent spec I can.
JATSO Posted July 13, 2022 Author Posted July 13, 2022 Points taken Thanks all, currently looking at @ICTDirect now for a refurb unit.
ICTDirect_Dave Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 Points taken Thanks all, currently looking at @ICTDirect now for a refurb unit. That's the spirit! I'm working from an 8th gen i5, 16gb ram, 256gb ssd and things are flawless. I can't imagine teachers will put their devices through the kind of punishment I do on a daily basis 1
PigClub Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 Hello, I work for a large organisation. Support is almost as important as specification. We have had bad experiences with suppliers that can't achieve a next day fix and this soon becomes days and weeks before a resolution. So do take this into consideration and absolutely avoid 'return to supplier' warranties.
LeMarchand Posted July 13, 2022 Posted July 13, 2022 I can't imagine teachers will put their devices through the kind of punishment I do on a daily basis You haven't met some of my teachers! 1
FN-GM Posted July 16, 2022 Posted July 16, 2022 @elsiegee40 would be horrified! This gave me a good laugh!!
nicholab Posted July 16, 2022 Posted July 16, 2022 That's the spirit! I'm working from an 8th gen i5, 16gb ram, 256gb ssd and things are flawless. I can't imagine teachers will put their devices through the kind of punishment I do on a daily basis I am using an HP Elitebook x360 G8 i7 32GB of ram and it seems sweet. 1
ianh21 Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 (edited) also consider Ryzen, the new gens are really good. i3 is poor for a teacher, i'd supply a i5 minimum/ryzen 5/7. the dynabooks i've had in to repair are poor. i would also go business grade machines, elite/pro books, latitudes/thinkpads. built to last.
