elsiegee40 Posted July 15, 2022 Posted July 15, 2022 Keep the windows and blinds closed on the sunny side, open up once the sun is off the windows (or ground just outside). I've put solar blinds on the bedrooms facing west - made a big difference. That’s what we do. The front of our house gets a beating from the sun. Great for the solar panels not so great for the house. I close all the windows, curtains and blinds on that side of the house. If it very hot I have found it better to keep all windows and external doors closed as well 1

School remains a professional environment however, and staff are asked to continue to respect this, Smart shorts, lightweight trousers and tops (rather than suiting) may be worn. Beachwear, flipflops etc should be avoided." Thank goodness! 3

My kids Surrey school has announced closed all day Monday and Tuesday and will 'attempt' to run online learning. Parents broadly not happy and no doubt all those home PC's and laptops generating more heat! Wednesday is last day of term so open for half a day! Also, starting September, both kids told to start 2 days late as they are focussing on other years groups. I can't see how they are meeting statutory education days/hours?

My school always starts the year 7's, 11's and 6th form the week before 8's, 9s, 10s mainly on the fact to get the year 7s in and adjusted to the school whilst its quiet and the year 11s/6th form always leave around July after their exams. So I assume they have worked it out etc.

I suspect your kids are getting the statutory days and the other kids are getting more than required by law. 1
FN-GM Posted July 16, 2022 Posted July 16, 2022 I see people say online that Australia gets hotter weather without drama. It’s not true! It did reach 47c in Adelaide for a week or so. However, it feels much hotter in the UK due to the humidity. Plus it did present problems. Anyone working outdoors didn’t work.

That's an interesting thought and hands-up, the cynic of me is to blame, not something I considered. If I get time time and the inclination, maybe I'll check. Overall it's a very good school and has a new head that is starting to show some positive impact, but previously it had a reputation beyond 'very good' and I set personal demanding standards and expect the same of schools - perhaps a little too much so!

My room air con is broken, have found a mobile unit, but the servers are not happy. The head has delayed getting the air con fixed. Had a text last night saying that the servers will be turned off to stop ict use in the classrooms to prevent heat build up.

One has the servers in a stuffy IT room and the other has the servers in a cubby hole behind the photocopier in an attic space that’s stuffy at the best of times, horrible when the weather is in the high 20s… and we are forecast 39C today… Fortunately the latter is a private school and has already broken up. The only kids in are the preschoolers. Hopefully whoever is in charge of IT there now can shut them down for a couple of days.

It took me too many years for me to get air conditioning into the server room, then it was a new battle to get them to agree to maintain it! At no stage was I allowed to shut the servers down, the only times they could be restarted was out of hours (while I was on site or connected remotely) or when they crashed, for whatever reason.
Koldov Posted July 18, 2022 Posted July 18, 2022 (edited) Luckily there's always been air-con for our servers since before I started. There was even a separate room (large cupboard) built for them and air-con installed, however last year I decided to move them into the plant/electricity/core switch room. This also has air-con, but this is a more industrial unit paid for and maintained by the LEA as it's a main school thing. This has the advantages of being able to plug directly into the 1Gbps core (instead of the 100Mbps switch it used to be on) and save on maintenance and running costs of the old server room air-con as well. Our ICT suite will be in use today as it has air-con too and over the last couple of weeks have seen the evening cleaners in there on their break and even a couple of meetings! I sent the email last week to all the teachers about things that usually run hot (projectors etc.) being even hotter, but that will probably be ignored as usual... Edited July 18, 2022 by Koldov

LeMarchand Posted July 18, 2022 Posted July 18, 2022 None of my schools has cooling for the server rooms . Doubly so in two of them as it's also where I work from! Approach to school very quiet today; it seems people are keeping kids home.
