elsiegee40 Posted September 23, 2022 Posted September 23, 2022 What technique did you use to measure? Our solar panels app monitors usage. I turned the appliance on and off at the wall several times and looked to see how much it went up/down on each occasion. Not 100% accurate but good enough 1
6Foot2 Posted September 23, 2022 Posted September 23, 2022 Link: Mansfield Town kick off early to save on floodlight bill [The Telegraph] Mansfield Town are the first Football League club to bring forward kick off times to reduce their floodlight usage in the cost-of-living crisis. The club's League Two encounter at home to Walsall on Oct 15 will begin at 1pm rather than the scheduled 3pm. "The club is endeavouring to mitigate the forthcoming, considerable increase in energy bills," a statement from the club says. "As part of these efforts, the earlier kick-off time will enable the club to discern whether significant savings can be made on floodlight usage and other energy costs." Telegraph Sport disclosed earlier this week how floodlight usage had been raised by the EFL's board and will be discussed again by all clubs next week. Mansfield are understood to have made a special application to the league, with advice from safety advisory groups. Research from the Fair Game claims that almost two thirds of lower league clubs would consider earlier kick-offs as winter bills surge. The group, which is campaigning for improved governance of the game, said its research is based on "one club in the Championship, five in League One, six in League Two, nine in the National League, seven in National League North, six in National League South, and five further down the pyramid". "Nearly all the clubs surveyed were either concerned or very concerned about the cost-of-living crisis," the campaign group said. "On average, out of 10, the clubs’ level of concern was a massive 7.15 – a figure that peaked amongst clubs in League Two (8.20)." There is hope that caps on energy bills will help clubs get through the winter, but the situation adds to pressure on the Premier League to finalise its so-called "New Deal for Football". The league has been reviewing its distribution models for at least two years, having come under pressure amid the furores sparked by Project Big Picture and the European Super League. A key part of the new system of redistribution will be based on ensuring some of the cheques handed out to clubs will be spent on infrastructure, such as training grounds, rather than wages. There will also be a renewed focus on merit in a bid to contain wage overspending at Championship level, with payments on a sliding scale based on position throughout the pyramid. Other competitions in non-league have already approved plans to bring forward kick-off times. Club insiders told Telegraph Sport the move was an experiment to see how much costs could be saved. The Football Association has given permission for several non-League competitions to move kick-off times earlier. In response to the survey, a spokesperson for the FA said: "The FA and County FAs are not-for-profit organisations that reinvest all of the money made back into football. Our priority over the past few seasons, including through the worst of the pandemic, is evidence of this approach as we worked to support grassroots clubs and the volunteers running them to survive the period and get back on their feet." 1
mikeprice Posted September 24, 2022 Posted September 24, 2022 Tested my microwave and ovens this morning. The microwave uses 2W when not in use. My ovens use 5W between the two when not in use. I suppose I'll have to measure ours now - just out of curiosity!
mikeprice Posted September 24, 2022 Posted September 24, 2022 I suppose I'll have to measure ours now - just out of curiosity! Microwave - which doesn't have a clock or anything - 0.5W so I thought I would try the wonderful energy saving device known as the Smart Meter In Home Display Unit - commonly referred to as 'the smart meter' 1W constant once connected so that is 24W per day 365 days per year (lets ignore leap years) = 8.760Kwh per year working on the current (sorry) price cap - and ignoring the standing charge - of 28.34 means the display unit costs 248p per year to run AKA £2.84 unless my maths is as bad as my grammar 1

ITGuyNW Posted September 26, 2022 Posted September 26, 2022 Has anyone got a heat pump tumble dryer? Have you made any cost savings on the electric?
BOOT Posted September 26, 2022 Posted September 26, 2022 I use a normal tumble-dryer on a cool cycle. 40 mins costs me 15p. Cost of a new model would far exceed any savings on electric.
ITGuyNW Posted September 26, 2022 Posted September 26, 2022 Our condenser dryer is only an on/off. Its a bog standard Indesit thing which is not economical at all. I understand heat pump dryers arent the greatest. A lot of people complain that clothes feel slightly damp still. However I have the money to spend upto £450 on a dryer and I'm wondering if its worth it. Hmm...

They emailed us to say they are still not receiving data, that's because I have unplugged it because it displays nothing and is a pointless waste of 24w per day.
Davit2005 Posted September 26, 2022 Posted September 26, 2022 (edited) British Gas smart meter remote display has not worked for 3 years. Given up trying apparently meters still reporting back to them, got the read out unplugged. I have a number of TP Smart plugs that monitor consumption, most of my stuff that is on (or plugged in) 24/7 is using smart plugs, some get turned off if I go to bed, leave home or work from home. No tumble dryer or dishwasher apart from me. All LED bulbs. Edited September 26, 2022 by Davit2005

Worth it to quickly check if you've left anything on before you leave for work. What do you have it showing, for me it's always real time electricity usage. How many watts do your smart plugs use? I've always air dried my clothes, total cost: 0
sigma Posted September 27, 2022 Posted September 27, 2022 (edited) I have a couple of these. https://www.theowl.com/index.php/energy-monitors/standalone-monitors/owl-usb/ The one that measures consumption for around 15 or so years, the one that measures generation from the panels for around 12 years. I am resisting a smart meter since they can't tell me anything I don't already know. Edited September 27, 2022 by sigma

They can tell your energy company things they don't know though, and then you can get cheaper power/get more for exporting solar
LeMarchand Posted September 27, 2022 Author Posted September 27, 2022 They can tell your energy company things they don't know though, and then you can get cheaper power/get more for exporting solar I don't think that's the way Capitalism works.
Koldov Posted September 27, 2022 Posted September 27, 2022 Unfortunately I have a Gen1 'smart' meter (SMETS1) and it doesn't report to my supplier as we changed to a new supplier at the end of our fixed rate a few years ago (but they're 'working on it' apparently)... I still have the remote display though and it works. It can also run on batteries for those that are worried that the pennies it costs to run won't outweigh the savings made by measuring what each appliance uses (or those that have another means of doing so). So I used it a while ago to run around and turn things off, but honestly there wasn't much... I also pointed out to the OH how my microwave made coffee was more cost efficient than her kettle boiled cup of tea, which was received well...

I thought I had a SMETS1 smart meter as well I was rather surprised when EDF managed to get it to work properly and send them all the data SO I got the make and model and looked it up - mostly because I wanted to find out how to get an export reading turns out some of the SMETS1 meters are really SMETS1 OR 2 meters and just need to be told to change to SMETS2 why it took several suppliers and a lot of 'registering' and 'requesting' to get this done is a good point! so it might be worth having a look at the meter (the real one - not the in home display) and checking it out online
Koldov Posted September 27, 2022 Posted September 27, 2022 it might be worth having a look at the meter (the real one - not the in home display) and checking it out online Thanks, I did check online here with the meter number and postcode: https://smartmetercheck.citizensadvice.org.uk/
sigma Posted September 27, 2022 Posted September 27, 2022 They can tell your energy company things they don't know though, and then you can get cheaper power/get more for exporting solar I am on the FIT tarriff that currently pays 62.3p per Kw for what we generate and 2.15p for what we export which is calculated on the basis of 50% of what we generate, so I don't think we would get more.
mavhc Posted September 27, 2022 Posted September 27, 2022 https://www.energy-stats.uk/octopus-agile-outgoing-export/ 27-53p, yeah, if you have FIT that's probably more. 62p?, how long until your FIT ends?

Took years, because hardware people can't write software. "all SMETS1 meters need to be upgraded and connected to the DCC by September 2022" 3 months ago 3.8 million were still to be upgraded, https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/smart-meters-statistics should update soon with the latest numbers

We had the panels in 2010/11 and the FIT guarenteed for we think for us 25 years. It stays with the house if we ever move. The new rate is set every April and goes up every year.
Ditto Posted September 28, 2022 Posted September 28, 2022 (edited) EDF notified me 5 days ago that it's estimated my gas/electricity bill will increase by about £1200 per annum. Today they have said they are increasing my DD by £368 per month. Currently I am about £400 in credit. Perhaps it related to being on a deal by EDF due to the takeover of a collapse provider and therefore not having had previous increases, (@mikeprice, I think your circumstances are they same), but look as though I'd going to have to do some serious number checking. How easy is it for them to bill me (variable direct debit?) for the exact usage per month. They are set up to receive readings every 30 seconds so can I just ask for that? Ditto Posted September 28, 2022 Posted September 28, 2022 (edited) £368pm is considerably more than £1200pa! That hadn't passed me by . Their documentation says they take weather predictions in to account when estimating usage - perhaps I missed the news story about the start of the next ice age! Edited September 28, 2022 by Ditto 4
Koldov Posted September 28, 2022 Posted September 28, 2022 Today they have said they are increasing my DD by £368 per month Not sure what your current DD is (or your usage history), but even if you meant "increasing my DD to £368", that would mean a yearly spend of £4416 (£368*12). I'm dreading that email.... I'm with Scottish Power and may well be looking at a 'pay as you go' scenario... I am £300+ in credit and there is already a note on my account that I should increase my DD!!! Luckily it seems they do offer it: https://www.scottishpower.co.uk/small-business/customer-services/payments-pricing#:~:text=Monthly%20Variable%20Direct%20Debit Couldn't find anything for EDF on a quick search... 1
