Yeah, I mean I had a quick flick through some info on the internet (disclaimer - I have not fully researched these figures):

"Government statistics show that during the energy crisis with gas price hikes overwhelming dozens of energy suppliers, the UK exported unusually large amounts of gas."

https://www.energylivenews.com/2022/01/31/how-did-the-uk-manage-to-double-gas-exports-amid-energy-crisis/

I wonder if they paid more for it than we did...?

I've often wondered about things like this and the general 'world economy', a bit like how countries that produce and export certain products, then also import the same products...

Countries are large, and one side of a country is often closer to another country than it is to the other side of itself. Plus it's probably easier to build a pipeline across the sea than the land.

And gas usage during the year varies by about 25-50%, so you'd either need to store a lot, sell it cheaply, or stop making it for half the year, if you don't export it.

I don't want to go all amphibian

but isn;t that exactly what the thingy that we mustn;t mention was supposed to fix

I really cannot see why companies cannot pay for gas/energy at an independent rate rather than using the overall rate

the same as Tesco are allowed to buy up the whole of a farms's output at a negotiated price (not saying that is fair - but..) rather than paying the current rate - never mind if it comes from cheaper wind or more expensive gas

or whatever

seems rather like it has not been privatised fully - but then I don't want to go all amphibian

It's far worse than that.

BP and Shell have 0 corporation tax or production tax on oil from the UKs North Sea fields in 3 years. We are giving them our oil and paying them to run their companies.

They do this by claiming tax relief on cleaning up their old fields, the UK is losing around £300 per household in UK tax revenue per year, even without windfalls on profits. The UK oil fields should be nationalised.

Why, as a gas producer, would I sell at less than the current market rate though?

The reason the farm would sell at that lower rate is a) there's loads of other farms to compete with, b) there's 4 massive companies who buy 90% of the stuff, c) stability, someone's buying everything I made, for a known price? excellent, now I can plan properly. Also save loads of time finding other buyers.

We're not giving them our oil, and we're not paying them, they're just not paying us as much. Oil fields are nationalised, they belong to the nation.

We're paying them, because of tax reduction to 10% and off setting this against the fees they are claiming to cleanup their own mess.

Weird how they belong to the nation, but we get nothing from it.

Oh the irony… storm Dudley followed by Eunice and we’re having solar panels fitted.

The panels went up in the gap between storms yesterday. The electricians arrived very early this morning. They don’t have much to do outside, but they want to get it done before Eunice really gets going in Kent.

Look it the minus numbers for petrol revenue tax, we are paying them.

We should be pulling 20bn a year, but that is being kept by oil as profit.

It's surprising how much energy is being generated as it still pulling 300-600 watts in this weather!

Welcome to the solar panel club! It makes quite a difference to the electricity bill.

Looking at https://rippleenergy.com (community owned windfarm). Slightly more per kW from what I can see, but my electricity usage is ⅓ electric car (nighttime, so I'd need to factor in a home battery to get the maximum benefit from solar panels) and ⅓ heating (winter, so less solar available). I know you can sell your solar back to the grid, but from what I've read, to get best value you need to use what you generate.

Ironically, I suspect on a day like today they might have to turn them off because of too much wind!

Why would you remove the money they're paying the government when calculating how much they pay the government?

There's a reason they reduced the amount they pay, but if you want to compare that reason to what happened in the same time frame with Norway, that would be useful

You would want your drying to start when you had excess solar, or the grid was overloaded and they were offering cheap power.

Problem isn't the LAN, it's the cloud control, run your own server

If I had excess solar, I'd just hang it up outside!

Actually today, I used excess solar for tumble drying. It wasn’t warm enough or windy enough outside for drying.

Energy prices...

The estimated price difference for the next year is almost £600 more for us. The standing charge has also gone up.

Very similar here. I get that the wholesale price has risen, but wth is going on with the standing charge? The wires are still there, they still aren't reading my meter, other fixed costs haven't changed... Oh, making an obscene profit, clearly.

Funny thing - I checked my bank account yesterday and noticed £40 paid IN from EDF

checked my EDF account and it is a refund due to overpayment!!!

weird

Everyday I kick myself just a little harder for not signing up for a new fixed rate a couple of months ago when it was £80 per month, because I thought that was too expensive....

I've got to just forget about it as it's doing my head in and just resign myself to the fact that all my hard earned savings will be gone in the next year or so...

I guess I'd got too relaxed and forgot that I should be living like there's going to be a war/famine/flood/pandemic around every corner...

Still could be worse... First World problems.... Eh? Oh, yeah, those are becoming First World problems now too aren't they...

EDIT: Just checked and the latest offer for a fixed rate is £180 per month... :(

Don't worry. They'll soon grab it back!

Not until September 2024 as that is when my nice cheap (but looked damn expensive when I accidentally agreed to it) fixed rate ends

best mistake I have made for many years

I suspect EDF are regretting that offer

Having fully committed to electricity (electric car, air source heat pump) my usage has tripled so with the price rises my bill is over five times what it used to be.

I made myself feel better by looking at heating oil prices:
