Student ID badges

Any schools give all of their students ID badges for ID, contactless payment, copiers, door access? How does it work out? Come across any GDPR issues? Do they lose/forget them much?

We give our 1800 kids them. Mifare cards for ID, Paxton, Copiers and Cashless Catering.

 

We reprint maybe 10 a day.

We give them to sixth form only, used for door access and signing in/out. GDPR - no seen any issues. We had to include, name, date of expiry and the photo only. They don't seem to lose them that often, but it does happen and the old card is soon cancelled.

Yes we do here, doors, cashless catering, library and printing. We charge £5 for a whole ID card (Card, holder & Lanyard). SLT didn't like it to start with but it's working really well. We don't put students photo's on the ID cards, just name and year of entry.

We issue mag stripe cards, we use them for photocopiers and about to start using them for cashless catering. Also students can pay a term in advance for the school bus, they get issued with a version which says bus pass, the term it applies to and the bus they catch, this one has to be reprinted each term though :/ . We charge £1 for lost cards, we don`t issue card holders. The cards have student name, school name and bus pass status. They used to have the student photo on them but it was removed after a GDPR review.

I reprint a few a day , my only issues is that lost cards don't get reported. I thought our move to Papercut would've fixed it but no.

Nothing identifiable on the cards as it's just their login name (which consists of initials and roll number)

We use Mifare cards for Door, Photocopying and cashless catering for 1500 pupils and replace about 10 a week at a cost of £5.

 

We issue a lanyard at the beginning of year 7 which is colour coded for the year of entry but as no one uses them we don't replace them unless specifically asked for them. We always issue a holder because the pupils used to have a tendency to decide they did not like the picture and scrub it off but with a holder they can turn it round instead, this has reduced the new card requests by about 2 or 3 a week.

Similarly, we issue lanyards and holders up front but never re-issue them, so it's only the cost of the card that we would be allowed to recoop if we did charge.

We issue RFID fobs out to students instead of ID badges, we find they are easier than badges and lanyards. Costing wise, I'm unsure exactly what we pay as our Kitchen team order them through where we get our Tills from each year for the new intakes. We are just lucky that they have these as we use them to link with PaperCut, saved sorting something else. The price was set before I arrived but the cost of the materials is not the full cost of replacing the card.

We issue ID Cards to our Sixth Formers. Enrolment day we take their photos, and then mass print a whole load of cards ready for their first day. ID Cards and a Network Username / Password letter is given which they have to then set a password at first logon. Once this is done, they then register the cards themselves against their AD account using one of the MFD Devices in the school; just tap the badge against the reader, enter their username and freshly set password and that card is ready to go. The card number gets stored in PaperCut which gets transferred into a AD Attribute by a script that runs every hour. After this, the cards then work on the doors in the school using Paxton Net2 which is running the Net2ADSync add on. Using this, allows us to automatically block the card for access if we disable their AD account (usually if they leave).

 

We charge the Sixth Form £1 for each reprint which covers the card and ink, but the Sixth Form charges the students £2.50 for replacements.

 

My daughter at University when she was in Halls had ID Cards which gained access to the site, their building and their individual rooms, etc - they were charged £20 if they lost the cards and needed a new one. I guess it's to ensure they look after them.

Factor in your time producing it, cost effective of software to print it. Cost of printer. It all adds up.

We issue SALTO MiFare ID Cards to everyone.

 

Used for SALTO Access Control, Cashless Catering, Follow Me Printing, InVentry Visitor Sign In (which students use to scan in if they are leaving early or arriving late) and also our library system.

 

We also charge £5 for a replacement. We have custom printed lanyards.

 

The cost of parts, dye film, lanyard, etc is around £4.25 so our time is paid at 75p per replacement.

 

We print around 6 replacements a day in a school with 1750 students and 200 staff.
