New Government Laptop, ok but will trip users up...

Got some of the new laptops Windows Toshiba Portige (dynabook) Celeron

 

looks ok but has a gotya in it. The first use is great goes to desktop and is ready to roll....BUT powerdown and power up again and it presents the pupil with a .\localadmin and wants a password. You are expected to cancel and type .\localuser no password.

 

How many pupils will read the instructions!

And look at the speed of those celerons. They barely hold a candle to the last AMD X2 processors we have a few of floating around still!

nope @hardtailstarr , I don't want the headache of managing these laptops. All our set external work is done via websites. These laptops are locked down and internet filtered already, (something I can't offer easily)

 

I also never want to take these into stock as they're going to be unsuitable. So they go out the door... bye.

You wouldn't, the BIOS is password proected and you can't boot from USB I believe.

We changed the registry settings on ours however it seems the DFE have something in place to automatically change the default username and password back to their settings, breaking the auto login for .\localuser, and reverting back to this mess. They aren't too slow when running very few programs/tabs at once.

We could have asked for chrome books and that may have been the better option. Even though we are a full o365 school. no gsuite here.

Anyone got any details about who to contact about getting admin/bios details? The laptops were delivered by our local Fire Brigade and our Technical contact has had no info at all. We can't install any remote management software or any required apps so we are just sitting on them!

The named Technical Contact can request for the admin passwords. (email request to [email protected])

 

For half the laptops we have, that is myself - but the other laptops were supplied via the LEA so I have asked them (along with all of the other schools in the borough from the looks of the round-robin emails) too for their named Technical Contact to request the admin password on our behalf.

 

As @chazzy2501 I just want to just get them out and change little / nothing as I wouldn't be able to do MDM control or remote internet filtering either if I rebuilt them.

If the schools are expected to provide their own MDM after this then I really wish thy were all chromebooks as its a one off cost to have them managed! No school has budgeted to have extra devices

Hi Folks.

 

Ok, so one of my schools has sent out the laptops and we’ve not got a copy of the instructions (although we briefly saw them) and now we’re getting hassle from a teacher as the students can’t login.

 

I don’t suppose anyone has a copy of the instructions sent with these laptops that you would be willing to scan and share so you?

 

This way I can translate what are already fairly idiot proof directions (if they read them) into something ours can understand. Lol.

Yup, tried that first funnily enough.. plenty of information about getting the laptops and how you should distribute, but not the actual instruction sheet that they put in with them..

Anyone else found the paper that says they need to be checked within 3 days of delivery otherwise it cant be exchanged!

Received several DFE laptops , unfortunately there are all locked. School would like to install softwares for students on those laptops, however it has not been possible as the laptops once powered on go straight onto localuser profile/desktop. Is it possible to install anything on these laptops or a way to log in as localadmin. Thanks
