We just have a steady stream of them being returned to us several a week, where most actually just need to be charged (really?!?) but most either the backlight has gone, OS corrupted or in a few cases the charger actually doesn't work.

The charging thing will likely be because the charging point is the same size as the headphone jack, so a lot of people are plugging into the headphone jack instead.

We had this with 1 parent, I couldn't believe it! But easy to do I suppose.

That's such an easy problem to avoid, why did they make them like that?! We have some Lenovo laptops where the charger is quite similar to a USB, but they are at least different enough that you can't put one in the other.

Which is being fixed by Dell engineer onsite tomorrow.

Yep. Going to Dell direct was less than 24hrs from report to fix.

Still not heard back from DfE.

We've got some of the Tactus GeoBook 1e model and one has come back from a student with a faulty backlight. I've requested a replacement but haven't received it yet - does anyone have a contact number for the support as I couldn't see one in the portal?

We've had some odd stuff, one of the Chromebooks was stolen and replaced pretty quick,

Was it stolen prior to delivery? because this has happened to me and the DFE are trying to blame it on the school but I 100% known I counted 43 boxes into the reception and 1 was missing.

my bid for two dongles took four weeks, I was hardly applying for loads

Go with the data uplift on their/parents' personal mobiles. Much easier, and it only took a few days for the one I requested. They are generally unlimited too, but the DfE dongles are 20GB (one of our students used their 20GB in 3 days!)

We had a ticket left unanswered for a month until yesterday. I got the HT to speak with somebody in the LEA and then magically I had a response within a couple of hours saying a replacement will be delivered next week.May be worth getting in touch with somebody in your LEA.

Next problem - is there a way to easily reset any saved data in the .\localuser profile on these things so they can given to another student?

We've had 5-6 returned already for various reasons, would like them to go back out asap.

Obvs I've cleared Credential Manager and Google and IE cache. If I had admin rights I'd just do a new profile for them, of course.

Something like Wise Disk Cleaner? It's similar to CCleaner but AFAICT OK to use in EDU.

I posted earlier, but this is my method (not that we've had many come back in)

I might have missed something but I'm happy to add to it if anybody thinks of anything else :)

Intriguing email from the DfE.

Anyone else had this yet?

It looks like they are throwing more laptops (chromebooks please) at us.....

Dear colleague,

You may be aware that DfE has purchased 300,000 more laptops and tablets for the Get help with technology programme. This means we’ve been able to allocate extra devices to most schools.

(Hogwarts) Academy will get an allocation increase soon.

[h=2]How many extra devices you’ll get, and when you’ll be able to order them[/h]From 5 February onwards, we’ll contact all schools (or trusts and local authorities ordering for schools) that have been allocated more devices.

This will be your invitation to order, and at that point you’ll be able to sign in to the Get help with technology service to see how many extra laptops and tablets are available for you.

Anyone know if the data sims have YouTube blocked?

Can anyone think of a reason why someone on Virgin can't access YT via a DfE laptop, but it works fine on other household devices and if I hotspot it to my (Virgin) phone?

Outside of "The dog ate my homework" v 2021.1.

@LeMarchand - Youtube is blocked on the DfE devices.

Thanks, but it definitely wasn't on this machine as it worked when hotspotted to my phone. Not heard any more on the matter, so assuming it was a "dog ate my homework" scenario.
