Just had a HP 250 G7 returned to us, as it kept falling off the home wifi

Now in school for a look and the wireless driver is completely gone - and its locked down so i can't re-install it-- anyone else have this?

@meadowgirl We reimage ours when they come back in. We had to let them go out as is but we have now created the image.

You can get into the BIOS using this website below. You need to enter the BIOS password incorrectly on laptop 3 times in a row. It then gives you a code that you can enter in the website and it gives you a BIOS password that gives you access and you can set all the settings as required (including a new BIOS password!). Free to reinstall OS from whatever method you choose and of course obliterating the Windows admin password.

How can HP still knowingly sell such insecure laptops?

It is quite something isn't it! It's up there with flipping a jumper on Dell motherboards to remove the BIOS - do they still allow what? Still, has proved useful on more than one occasion.

On a desktop machine you have it locked, or in a locked room, laptops are easily stolen though. Bitlocker them, they have TPM, so all they can do is wipe the machine, not retrieve password hashes.

We are having the same issue. Nightmare!

Anyone had a look for the latest batch? We have a load of Satellite Pros that aren't even listed.

What's the spec on them? I thought Toshiba had stopped making laptops.

Sharp (who also own SmartBoard and make iPhone components) bought them and revived the DynaBook brand. Really impressed how they also made the driver and support docs back catalogue available.

The Dynabooks we've recieved as part of the scheme are suitably basic - but I have much more confidence in them than the post financial scandle/Fukashima Toshibas.

Still not as quick at the W10 machines at another site, which we left "as is" - so nothing for me to do.

This is how we've done it on our 200+ machines.

The school I'm a Governor for decided to have blank, unimaged machines sent, thinking they'd get them sooner. They actually got them two weeks later than we did, and now they have to image each one.

Anyone know if the data sims have YouTube blocked?

Can anyone think of a reason why someone on Virgin can't access YT via a DfE laptop, but it works fine on other household devices and if I hotspot it to my (Virgin) phone?

Outside of "The dog ate my homework" v 2021.1.

We have had some HP 255 G7's secured by the DfE and have found ExpressVPN installed. Any idea to why this would be installed? Not had any Wi-Fi issues reported though.

No idea but that's not good, they'll probably be able to walk right past onprem filters.

Can you replicate the problem when you hop on to the student computer with Quick Assist?

Hadn't thought of trying that, TBH. Can see that adding even more work to an incredibly high load if it got around that could be done.

As it happens, all has gone quiet now. The class teacher was having genuine problems accessing YT (our Smoothwall had them flagged as a student - now sorted) and I'm wondering if this was seen as something that could be used as an excuse by someone who didn't know the reasons and that the filtering on the laptops isn't the same as the school's.

We have been given a stack of 32 iPads that I need to setup and as it's been years since I worked on IOS I'm more than a bit rusty.

In another thread it was mentioned I needed a DEP code to add the iPads to an MDM. Is this still the case and if so where would I get the DEP code from?

We just have a steady stream of them being returned to us several a week, where most actually just need to be charged (really?!?) but most either the backlight has gone, OS corrupted or in a few cases the charger actually doesn't work.

We've deployed 175 devices now. One returned with a non-springy space bar. Not bad tbh.

One faulty charger in the first batch (Dynabook), and that's it.

One of the school laptops was returned with a faulty screen (the fault being it didn't work as well after the laptop had been dropped), and we also had one of our school laptops returned by a family because it had been used already.
