It is Windows laptop. WIthout looking hard you can find it for around £200 ex vat. So it made me wonder, if any company going to be involved in a government project for these laptops and if yes, who is going to check the pricing is correct and proper.

A 100e, that isn't going to perform at a blistering speed, but to be fair it seems to get a few decent reviews. Here is another 100e, but this time not a Lenovo. One became a classic, one won't...

Given the previous post, perhaps the Windows laptop is that device. Lenovo also do a Chromebook that's also a 100e so perhaps it's that. As for the tablet, no idea.

They seem very basic for what they are worth especially when you can buy a decent sized refurb laptop for that.

 

These aren't really laptops, they are netbooks, or "Winbooks" as what they are now refered to as. The 64Gb storage space will soon fill up.

 

I think the Chromebook version might be this 81MB0008UK > https://www.technoworld.com/lenovo-chromebook-300e-81mb0008uk-laptop - unless this is the bigger brother to the 100e chromebook.

Yup that's the bigger brother of the 100e Chromebook. It's literally a Windows version of the 100e.

Which will work great if it has ChromeOS on it, but with Windows on it, its a whole other world of difficulties due to the limited processor power, RAM and disk size. Windows just isn't optimised for that kind of machine.

After seeing the specs of the windows one, i think i'd go Chromebook too after having chance to think about it last night. The winbook won't last a year.

ok - Where are we getting that the Lenovo device is the government device from tho?

 

I'm not sure of the process but our MAT have a portal that someone registers and i guess they turn up from somewhere.

I tested some of the 100e models last year with windows and found out that Lenovo do not support PXE booting on this model

I might just be, but I've found this is with a few models latest or the PXE build was just a nightmare enabling it and so forth

Yes that's quite a weak device - 4GB of ram it's going to struggle (I usually pay extra to get a device with 8GB)

64gb of storage isn't going to help either....

I have a few dell laptops that don't support pxe - We dumped our image onto a USB key and use that instead.

The spec I saw said 'Soldered DDR4'. I'm guessing it's not possible to upgrade.

My post wasn't about the new government program, but just example of a different program - we have a student that came from us form a different county, and for some reason that county funded a laptop for him - but we had to get it from their supplier, which was more expensive than I could find just googling it.

The first time this was run was around 2006-ish. The idea was to give disadvantaged pupils a laptop + internet connectivity for the home.

This was, as you can imagine, problematical. The cost of laptops back then was still quite high and the one we finally got that had a usable spec couldn't even have a trackpad fitted within the budget. IIRC we had talked to Lenovo and they had come up with a laptop that had the pointing-device-that-dare-not-speak-its-name but no trackpad.

Also an issue was that home internet connections had to be provided. This too casued issues as ISP's and telco's had blacklisted many of the households either due to lack of payment or other reasons such as agression to the engineers. Given the prevelence of internet access these day I suspect it will be a less of a problem.

For the ones issued out, many were sold on quite rapidly from reports we received, with some being seen is second hand shops and cash converters.

I do hope this time it's better thought out.

We can make do with 2Gb/32GB Z-Series Atoms for some shared devices (the 2016 spiritual successor the original EEE PC). Having optimised a software set for those tiny machines, the Lenovo 100e is a step up and removes all the pain points

 

If you are in the google ecosystem - the Chromebook version is clearly the better choice.

 

 

For us and if I were making these purchasing decisions for my users it would be a toss up between iPad 7 with a Zagg rugged messenger or 100e, due to the current work load.

I must admit, I suspected the Windows laptop would be a low spec build (2GB RAM, Celeron CPU, etc.) so did consider ticking the "Chromebook" box even though we're not fully Google, as the students might get a nicer device. Let's wait and see what comes out, maybe we'll be pleasantly surprised...

^ Not a sausage.

 

We did get a contact from the county council asking who they should talk to regarding the social care laptops. That email indicated lead times of weeks, but it's not clear if that referred to council or the scheme as a whole.
