[ltsb, 1809] What's everyone using to provide remote IT support?

We wanted to sign up with TeamViewer as we've used it in the past but we've tried to contact them about the nonprofit discount and had no response, so we're looking at alternatives.

 

Basically we want something that will allow us to provide remote IT support both to organisation owned and personal computers.

 

Does anyone have any recommendations? It needs to be something that doesn't require admin rights or prior deployment/installation to run (TeamViewer has its QuickSupport that people can just download and use straight away, so something that can work like that would be good).

We are aware of Teams but we haven't got everything properly set up so we can use it at the moment, so we just want something we can use quickly and with no faffing and no need to open firewall ports or install anything on anybody's computer.

AT a museum I used to help out at I started using CloudBerry remote assistance - it is freeware

 

seemed to work - I used it to be able to contact my home desktop from the museum

That Quick Assist thing is neat, not heard of it before, will have to block it for the students though

This looks promising, although it seems like I have to sign up for an account on their site to download it? Do they provide exe files/apps that we can just provide to our users without them needing to sign up, or does everybody have to sign up?

Also, TeamViewer is only free for personal non-commercial use, schools need to purchase a license. Hope you guys aren't using the free version

Luckily I've been here on edugeek for the past 2 weeks. When I saw the swell in Microsoft Teams threads, I saw the writing on the wall. I got SDS setup in 2 days (thanks to edugeek).. using the salamander extract tool but the real work was getting the sims data in correct.

 

Phew, I did an all hands meeting with teachers last night on teams, it was a total mess but the idea got across.

there is msra built into windows. (Windows Remote Assistance)

 

just type msra into the run command.

I believe so, and only for the assister, not the assistee.

Wow, thought I knew most win 10, quick assist was a new one on me.. I have got MSRA working on a non domain joined PC (THAT was a trial-and-a-half) and it's probably better for same-network remote control but quick assist looks good (just tried)

 

DWservice is a similar thing, though is really meant for personal use as there's no user consent at all! I have a plan to package it up to intune to deploy if needed but I'll be all over quick assist.

We are using DirectAccess which allows school devices to automatically create a VPN connection back to the school network. This then allows us to use a range of options - ABTutor, RDP, remote control via SCCM.

Yes, and yes.

The assistant needs to login with an o365 account or an Microsoft free one.

With quick assist be aware of these issues.

 

1. You can't have the UAC prompt in the secure desktop. Correct this GPO setting for your laptops before they leave site.

2. No copy and paste between client and host.

 

Other than that its fine.

Did try to use quick assist yesterday and it wouldn't even get to the main screen, just stuck loading, on my computer and the teacher's computer

Maybe try UltraViewer as an alternative to Teamviewer https://ultraviewer.net/en/

The Zoho assist free tier is pretty good and allows for commercial use for a single technician I believe.
