JordanT91 Posted March 1, 2021 Posted March 1, 2021 I have just heard that my niece (who is diabetic) has been offered the vaccination, but she has declined because she has heard that it "causes infertility" That rumour was doing the rounds among our younger female TAs. We politely but firmly told them to stop talking bollocks and to go and get their vaccine. They all did, mind. 1
6Foot2 Posted March 1, 2021 Posted March 1, 2021 That rumour was doing the rounds among our younger female TAs. We politely but firmly told them to stop talking nonsense and to go and get their vaccine. They all did, mind. I don't have any traction with this relative: She has never listened to what I have to say. I just hope that she will see sense, and that when she does she is still able to opt in favour of taking the vaccination.
mikeprice Posted March 1, 2021 Posted March 1, 2021 I have just heard that my niece (who is diabetic) has been offered the vaccination, but she has declined because she has heard that it "causes infertility" We get that sort of thing from my wife's family either - 'a bloke in my cab said' or "I heard $thing and it's all over facebook so it must be true" they seem to be avoiding the dumb virus conspiracy theories so far - but we are waiting!
paulkerton Posted March 1, 2021 Posted March 1, 2021 I have just heard that my niece (who is diabetic) has been offered the vaccination, but she has declined because she has heard that it "causes infertility" Diabetes reduces fertility (Type 1 and 2). No evidence this jab does.
mavhc Posted March 1, 2021 Posted March 1, 2021 Well, I guess in some that's true, but even including the so called variants. Couple of issues; borders could only have been fully closed after it had already got out as it wasn't spotted in time - and it's unlikely to ever to have been. Second, shutting down borders 100% globally is not realistic, they are other factors to consider and some of those would include consequences of death. That's the trouble with reality, it really gets in the way at times. Shut them while you work out what's going on, then implement testing and isolation for all travellers, not that hard, many countries did it, and look they don't have the highest death rates in the world.

6Foot2 Posted March 1, 2021 Posted March 1, 2021 Not sure whether to put this here or in the Amusing Headlines thread but whatever... https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/feb/19/florida-women-wear-granny-disguise-covid-vaccine I wonder how prevalent this sort of thing is going to be? Link: 2
jmak Posted March 2, 2021 Posted March 2, 2021 Dolly Parton (@DollyParton) Tweeted: Dolly gets a dose of her own medicine. @VUMChealth https://t.co/38kJrDzLqC Worth it to hear her sing... Vaccine, vaccine, vaccine, vacciiiiiinnnne I'm begging of you please don't hesitate Vaccine, vaccine, vaccine, vacciiiiiinnnne Cos when you're dead.... It's too late!

Perhaps either help or hinder depending on whether any windows were open or not.
mavhc Posted March 3, 2021 Posted March 3, 2021 Got my 7 LFD tests in a box to do home LFD testing, seems a bit like a placebo if the people doing them at home haven't even had the 30 mins of training.

Isn't there a training guide in the box? (I'm getting mine tomorrow apparently) I was kind of expecting a QR code or something that linked to the training video the testers had to watch.

(I'm getting mine tomorrow apparently) I was kind of expecting a QR code or something that linked to the training video the testers had to watch. Haven't looked at mine properly yet (been able to get LAMP tests) but IIRC there is a revision doc saying not to use the other included guidance.
mavhc Posted March 3, 2021 Posted March 3, 2021 (edited) There's a glossy booklet, it does have a link to https://www.gov.uk/covid19-self-test-help printed on it which links to Edited March 3, 2021 by mavhc
Ditto Posted March 3, 2021 Posted March 3, 2021 https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/02/26/science/reopen-schools-safety-ventilation.html Looks to me from the simulation the teacher is almost certain to catch YKW whether window is open or the fan used.
Ditto Posted March 3, 2021 Posted March 3, 2021 There's a glossy booklet, it does have a link to https://www.gov.uk/covie19-self-test-help printed on it which links to Covie19 - arrghhh is that a new variant? [Decoded - typo in the link needs an edit] It looks straight forward in spite of the data about training and accuracy. I would hope anyone that can make I.T. work should be able to cope with this.
LeMarchand Posted March 3, 2021 Posted March 3, 2021 I would hope anyone that can make I.T. work should be able to cope with this. So a maximum of a handful of people in each school?
Ditto Posted March 3, 2021 Posted March 3, 2021 The videos are well worth a viewing. My favourite line so far is "Make sure you use a separate test kit for each person". Just imagine a frugal school trying to use the same swab on 30 kids in a classroom - that wouldn't help the R rate!
superatticman Posted March 3, 2021 Posted March 3, 2021 So the great divide has started taking place at my place of work. Those who are refusing to even consent to LF testing because it 'feels odd' or for various other reasons. Now the prospect of some unwilling to share an area with those refusing to take tests. Doesn't surprise me really when it comes to the self responsibility aspect of our society.
bald_pig Posted March 3, 2021 Posted March 3, 2021 Got my 7 LFD tests in a box to do home LFD testing, seems a bit like a placebo if the people doing them at home haven't even had the 30 mins of training. The point of the on site tests before you are given the home kit is to ensure you know how to take the test.
mavhc Posted March 3, 2021 Posted March 3, 2021 You know how to take it, (well, you don't because the people running the testing didn't learn it properly), but you don't know how to process it.
jmak Posted March 3, 2021 Posted March 3, 2021 OH has been using them since before Christmas (healthcare worker). Not sure how enforceable it is, but they have been told they are expected to use them, no opt out and tracking to see that they submit the results of two tests per week. It'll be interesting to see how long they keep doing it given that they've all been offered* the vaccine. Processing it isn't complicated (each step is simple), but it needs care, patience and accuracy. I can't imagine that being applied consistently by pupils. *I don't have words for what I think of the people who've watched colleagues and patients die from Covid, but choose not to have the vaccine. I struggle to see how personal freedom to choose can trump duty of care in healthcare jobs.
mavhc Posted March 4, 2021 Posted March 4, 2021 Should just fire people who are working with medicine but don't believe in it, "oh, it doesn't matter if we give the patient the wrong amount of drugs, they're all fake anyway"
the_quick Posted March 4, 2021 Posted March 4, 2021 I still believe these test are mostly waste on money and time. I will do it, as probably it is bit better than doing nothing, but: - these are unreliable in hands of not medically trained people - some will see a negative test as a way to relax more I still think schools should have more staggered start.
superatticman Posted March 4, 2021 Posted March 4, 2021 Agreed the rush to get everyone back seems a little Ill thought out. Just another month would have totally flattened the rate whilst only costing a few weeks of school. However it is what it is and I suspect it will spread quite heavily in schools due to a general feeling that we are out of this. Guards are down already and I've seen plenty walking about minus masks. With those who are 95%+ of covid deaths now offered the vaccine or vaccinated, we should now at least feel safer as a society for now.
