The coronavirus pandemic has brought chaos to lives and economies around the world. But efforts to curb the spread of the virus might mean that the planet itself is moving a little less. Researchers who study Earth’s movement are reporting a drop in seismic noise — the hum of vibrations in the planet’s crust — that could be the result of transport networks and other human activities being shut down. They say this could allow detectors to spot smaller earthquakes and boost efforts to monitor volcanic activity and other seismic events.

 

A noise reduction of this magnitude is usually only experienced briefly around Christmas, says Thomas Lecocq, a seismologist the Royal Observatory of Belgium in Brussels, where the drop has been observed.

 

Just as natural events such as earthquakes cause Earth’s crust to move, so do vibrations caused by moving vehicles and industrial machinery. And although the effects from individual sources might be small, together they produce background noise, which reduces seismologists’ ability to detect other signals occurring at the same frequency...

There is a detector near where I grew up - the top of Bidston hill on the Wirral (the detector - I grew up in a house several miles away - because it was warmer etc)

 

apparently the earthquake detector was so sensitive that if there was no-one nearby (it is a nature reserve) and someone walked toward the building then you could see their footsteps registering

 

apparently it was very sensitive because the Wirral is sort of not properly connected to the rest of the UK - so the whole peninsular moves up and down by up to 6 inches between high and low tides

hence the vibrations in the Earth's Crust tend to be magnified

Well I've had an answer from Tesco regarding my mistaken "priority booking" status:

 

The explanation as to why you have received an email could be for one of a couple of reasons. The Government provided all retailers with a list of individuals who are considered ‘at serious risk’ of COVID-19. The list consisted of email addresses and customer’s personal details used by the Government, which was already held on the NHS system OR individuals had self-registered on the Government website. For the purpose of identifying priority customers at Tesco, email was the quickest way to contact customers, wherever possible. Your email address for this purpose is not linked to your home address, which means you are not the identified ‘priority’ individual. This could be because someone has self-registered or is registered at their GP with your email address, maybe a close relative OR someone has registered on the Government portal and has made a typing error when entering their details. This information is beyond our control and has been provided by the Government and has no bearing on the data we hold about you.

 

So it may be from when I was hospitalised with appendicitis six years ago (before I moved house, hence the disconnect between email and postal addresses) - no-one else would be using my email on NHS, at least I hope not!

next door had visitors AGAIN today

 

it's pretty much every day - normally their son and his family

 

 

 

 

to make it worse - we took in a parcel for them a while ago - I took it round and put it on the doorstep, rang the bell and stepped back beyond the 2m

we had a little chat - she said that her immune system is compromised and he has asthma (but doesn't use his inhalers??)

 

but it seems to be OK to have visitors - and NO they are NOT delivering food as their main car and the other sons car come and go all day anyway

 

 

 

dunno what to do if a parcel is delivered for them as the drivers all know we are likely to be in!!

who would be tempted to 'seed' the bookcase with some 'interesting' books

maybe not real ones - but you could fake a coved from a4 enough to fake it

 

then see how long ti takes a journalist to spot it

You don’t have to accept a delivery for a neighbour. You simply refuse due to the current circumstances and fears for your own health.

 

Just refuse. I know someone whose neighbour is so obnoxious that no-one in the road will accept parcels for them.

You kind of have to just in case it’s for someone in your household. Although you can put a note on your front door saying that due to isolation you cannot accept parcels for neighbours
