ltough06 Posted March 2, 2020 Posted March 2, 2020 Hello, I was wondering if I could have a CC4 network at home somehow? Thanks, Lewis
Zammo Posted March 2, 2020 Posted March 2, 2020 I presume you mean for learning how it works as opposed to actually wanting it to manage your machines? Either way I doubt it is possible as RM have to install it IIRC?
Boredguy Posted March 2, 2020 Posted March 2, 2020 Well the only place you can get CC4 from is via RM, but there is a cost implication plus server licencing etc so it would not be cheap.
LukeRowberry Posted March 2, 2020 Posted March 2, 2020 Why don't you ask the IT guy in school to show you how it works? 1
DalekSec Posted March 2, 2020 Posted March 2, 2020 Worth noting that you can get student or teacher discounts for the Adobe suite, quite a good discount!
Zammo Posted March 2, 2020 Posted March 2, 2020 Worth noting that you can get student or teacher discounts for the Adobe suite, quite a good discount! I think they meant RM CC4
DJ-1701 Posted March 2, 2020 Posted March 2, 2020 (edited) If anyone wants a copy of SIMS they can find it here... Edited March 2, 2020 by DJ-1701 4
DalekSec Posted March 2, 2020 Posted March 2, 2020 I think they meant RM CC4 Yepp, but if they can't get it working at home (which will be the case) this is the alternative
Davit2005 Posted March 2, 2020 Posted March 2, 2020 (edited) Confused dot.com Why would anyone want to have RM CC network at home, INMO You are going to do far better by learning Vanilla windows in your own time. If you need to learn RM CC4 for work you really should look to get this training from your employer. Edited March 2, 2020 by Davit2005
elsiegee40 Posted March 2, 2020 Posted March 2, 2020 Unfortunately, CC4 is a licensed product that you must pay for. There is no way of getting it unless you pay for it. I assume you are relatively young as anyone working in IT would be aware of this. If you are interested in networks and how they work, why not have a chat with your school/college network team and find out how they got started.
DrBeaker Posted March 2, 2020 Posted March 2, 2020 We use CC4 but it's a licenced package from RM that has multiple benefits. I've worked with Vanilla and CC4 networks and found for some things, CC4 is a lot easier to deal with.
ltough06 Posted March 2, 2020 Author Posted March 2, 2020 I guess I’ll just use Active Directory then
rad Posted March 3, 2020 Posted March 3, 2020 Having worked with CC4 and Vanilla I’d say that a Vanilla is more technical. The joy of CC4 is ease for Allocating printers, software, allowing teachers to reset passwords, changing permissions, creating accounts etc. 1
DrBeaker Posted March 3, 2020 Posted March 3, 2020 Having worked with CC4 and Vanilla I’d say that a Vanilla is more technical. The joy of CC4 is ease for Allocating printers, software, allowing teachers to reset passwords, changing permissions, creating accounts etc. I went the opposite way to most techs. Went from Vanilla AD to CC4 AD due to job changes. I can see the pros and cons of each method. CC4 does take some burden off the day-to-day stuff so I can focus on solutions instead of admin work. However the other side of that coin is it's sometimes limiting in function compared to Vanilla AD. Don't know how it was in the late 90's/early 00's days but there's definitely more integrated solutions nowadays to rival CC4 but I guess it was quite ahead of it's day at the time. E.g. Impero was ace at one time, but it went downhill. 1

We replaced with vanilla AD. Was a good learning experience as I'd never dealt with Group Policies or AD before that.
Quinnc1 Posted August 12, 2021 Posted August 12, 2021 (edited) Hello, I was wondering if I could have a CC4 network at home somehow? Thanks, Lewis Hey there, I have been working at RM for a while now, I can tell you that it would be impossible to get CC4 at home Edited August 13, 2021 by elsiegee40
Norphy Posted August 12, 2021 Posted August 12, 2021 Hey there, I have been working at RM for a while now, I can tell you that it would be impossible to get CC4 at home, if you ever need more information on CC4 then please PM me Out of curiosity, is CC still being actively developed outside of bug fixes etc? I seem to recall hearing somewhere that RM were sun setting the product and moving more towards support of vanilla based networks.
ITGURU Posted August 12, 2021 Posted August 12, 2021 RM is a simple way for non experienced IT people to manage the network because its all in one place! Its just an alternative way to use ADUC, GPO, Print Management, etc so doesnt teach you the real world IT if you went elsewhere I've just decommissioned RM in a school that joined our trust to make it vanilla because they were still on server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 on CC4 and never paid for the upgrade, plus it was so locked down, so just added vanilla servers and workstations and everyone prefers it!
Deanuk Posted August 13, 2021 Posted August 13, 2021 My biggest piece of advice is to stay clear of CC4. Go down the vanilla route, jobs are not forever and you want skills that are transferrable to other roles. Do not box yourself into a niche market.

If you can work out stuff in the RM Management Console if you go down the Windows Server route (like I did!) then you can transfer the knowledge/skillset across. The concepts are mostly the same but just in a different packaging. I work on a CC4 network at one site and a Vanilla one at another. I'd say the CC4 network is just a dumbed down version of Windows Server. I'd also add - you also need to make sure you're bringing in the right solution for your school rather than for your career. Apologies if that seems a bit abrupt - genuinely not trying to start an argument!

CC4 isnt a 'dumbed down version of windows server' - your still running window server - its just a different GUI running on the top as all the services, consoles etc are still running on the server, you are just using a different interface. When I inherited a CC4 network i did everything through AD, GPO etc as thats what I was used to, hated the RMMC! So slow just to load users and change a password!

Well the idea of the management console is to simplify the management side of things, hence the dumbed down comment. The RMMC works pretty well in my experience, which is the current CC4.5 version. I'd agree it used to be fairly poor, I know my first exposure to CC4 wasn't a great experience, but as a mature product it's not bad - although I appreciate there's a price point to that. I dont personally have a preference with or without. I'd also add that RM wouldn't normally recommend to do stuff through AD/Group Policy as that would break aspects of what the RM system does.

Apologies if that seems a bit abrupt - genuinely not trying to start an argument! That’s very true. You can’t pick a solution for your employer based on how much it rounds out your own CV. Having said that, @Norphy and I did save our then employer nearly 90k by refusing to go to CC4, so probably fair to say it was also in my employer’s interest to go vanilla at the time. 1
