It’s Feb Half Term ....what does that mean for you?

So it’s February Half Term, is it a case of turning off that alarm or panicking you won’t get all those jobs done in a week?

 

For me, the alarm is off...but I’ve got a long list of jobs to do at home. Currently it’s removing wallpaper from the hall way.

Not too bad for me, but we haven’t had any holiday time for work since October so server updates are due, got some Hyper-V work on, and an office tidy up is well due!

Switch and wireless controller firmware updates, two new offices to kit out with pc's, someone is coming in to fix the automated gates for the thirty eighth time and I need to make a decent iron farm in minecraft..

For me it's in to work at the normal time, leaving at the normal time also.

 

The hope of an uninterrupted day when I can complete the work I have planned is a distant and forlorn one.

 

It seems that students and staff are 'destined' to interfere with my work one way or another, even though they are not expected to be on site.

Get to finish early throughout the week, not a lot to do (for once!) - WEEE collection, some minor cabling work, might even have time to tidy the office...no doubt something will happen along the way to scupper my plans though.

Got a switch replacement project in one of our schools over Easter so I’m going to spend at last a couple of days unpatching in the region of 2200 network ports that haven’t passed any data in the ten years that they’ve been installed.

 

 

I’m all for flood-wiring a place but making every port active? That’s just madness. Won’t be doing that with the new kit.

I had a forced 2-weeks off over Xmas, so Feb is a great time for me to get some work done.

 

Computer upgrades and rebuilds, loads of outstanding stuff from the summer and other various jobs.

New PC roll out to our Post 16 block (160 pcs) which is well overdue as the current kit it 10+ years old and creaking, even with SSD and ram upgrades. That should certainly reduce our fire fighting in that building.

 

SIMS migration planned as the current VM has lots of peculiar issues (was built in 2014 so could do with a rebuild anyway) which gives us the chance to move that to Server 2016 and SQL2016.

 

Ideally would like to move one if not both of out DCs to 2019 too but doubt that I’ll have the time to fit that in this week!

Intended to do freepbx server migration tomorrow (upgrading from FreePBX 13 to 15) did it this evening remotely instead, so that makes tomorrow a little easier.

 

Tuesday, planned shutdown of everything in the main server room, replacing every cable in the server racks with nice new cat6a cables which will be colour coded to purpose/vlan and documented. In the same process I'm reorganising the racks to a pre-planned layout which will also make the cabling easier and make adding and removing things easier in the future. Intended to do this for years, finally getting round to it.

 

Wednesday-Friday annual leave. (Wednesday is a maybe, depending on how successful/problem free Tuesday is)

The work I had planned/expected to be doing this week has been sidelined and I have been told that I am now concentrating on something entirely different.

 

I have to have this (unplanned for) work completed before students return (can't supply any more detail, but I am sure it's going to take longer than the time allowed, especially as I am out of Friday)

Work as usual. I'm doing server updates today, more of the same tomorrow and then we're hybridising our Exchange 2016 server ready for migrating mailboxes to the cloud starting later this week.

Replacing 12 copiers across 4 schools and 1 nursery. Migrating all remaining copiers over to the SmartSDK Papercut client so they match the new ones.

Installing 2 55" TVs in one of our classrooms at a school, as the room is a weird shape so there's no 1 spot where children can all see the screen without moving.

Organising the 6 monthly WEEE collection

Writing more documentation
