Do you issue devices to your teachers?

One of the budget pressures we constantly face is teacher devices - do we issue them laptops, do we put PCs in classrooms, do we issue iPads? etc...

 

So, I thought I'd do a straw poll and see what you all do these days.

We issue a laptop for every teacher as standard. We also have computers in about 50% of the classroom.

 

We buy them iPads if required for teaching, but not for all.

 

Basically we buy them whatever they need to do their job.

Primary - Laptops.

Secondary - Desktops.

 

The Secondary used to have laptops as well, but costs too much for, half of them just get left at home gathering dust, technology has moved on can use OneDrive or Google Drive to work on files if need be. SIMS can be accessed by Remote Desktop Gateway if really needs be.

We have PCs in every classroom (FoC) and a bank in the staffroom, and issue laptops to teachers for working from home. However, this is a legacy policy that I am pushing to change now that we have robust web-based RDS.

 

The prevailing opinion is "if we ask people to work from home, we must provide them with a laptop", which IMO doesn't stand up very well to scrutiny. I'm looking to replace it with a small bank of loan laptops as politics allows!

Desktops in each classroom with some more in the staff room. PE staff have laptops & iPads (Which they funded). Some other staff also have laptops (Mainly as they already had them and SLT don't want to force them to hand them back) but we also have some pool laptops which staff can borrow.

 

The direction we're taking is this:

- All rooms should have Desktops

- Laptop Pool for staff to book (Short term books, not 'I'll have it this term')

- Move MIS to allow PE staff to solely use iPads during lessons and desktops during PPA time

 

All the above is linked with our move to Office 365 for storage allowing any device, anywhere to access files. Allowing staff to work how they want, in school, at home. On the beach, up to them! (With MFA protection of course)

100% laptops here,

 

Admin staff have PCs, but everyone else, from the headteacher to TAs have laptops.

 

Microsoft wireless display adapters solved loads of issues with broken cables.

 

We also do not have a staff room, so none there.

From conversations in the past it seems it's a combination of:

 

Work as a team not alone (As in use department offices etc) and/or staff room = social time and work doesn't get done (Or a free room if you need to expand etc)

 

Personally, ours changed their mind and kept it in the end which to me makes more sense

Us, too. I can see our RemoteApp server reducing to being there for SIMS (main school) and Sesame (summer school) only. SIMS will (hopefully) go to the cloud soon, if Capita pull their finger out. Our 'everything everywhere' concept is beginning to take shape with Office 365, Teams, SharePoint available for use with their own Windows 10 and MacOS machines at home and their phones if they wish.

No staff rooms here either. Been re-assigned as a classroom. The main faculties (Maths, English, Science & Humanities) have 'Workrooms', each with 6 Desktops in. Most teaching staff stay in their main teaching rooms (when available) or are on-duty, when not actually teaching. Heads-of-Sheds (Year/Faculty leader, etc) have their own office, that they can go to when not teaching/on-duty.

 

All rooms have desktops in. No laptops for staff, but we do have several faculty 'pools' of laptops for the students.

Hmm, having departmental offices or workrooms makes sense. My concern with that sort of route is what about teaching support staff who don't "belong" to a particular department - they may well need out-of-class PC time too, to say nothing of a place to have a cup of tea!

 

Anyway, shutting up before I spend my remaining days as something you'd find in a pond...

We were a complete rebuild BSF, so you had a formula that set the amount of space you had for each thing.

 

There is no big staff room, there are staff hubs in zones, which are for all staff in that community (house) to use.

Most Teacher Offices/Workrooms have a sink and brew making equipment. Supply staff go where ever they want for a cuppa. Some meet up in an empty classroom, between lessons.

It depends on the school.

 

All teachers are issued an iPad, all ta's and iPod, across all schools. Some schools issue all teachers a laptop as well. All classrooms have a teaching pc, either standalone or an OPS unit in the IWB. All SMT and mobile staff have a desktop and laptop, most have a school issued phone and/or iPad as well.

In my ideal world, I'd just have desktops everywhere, would imagine we'd get a million tickets for laptops not connecting to the TV/Projector, sound not playing, the wireless not quick and that's without people forgetting chargers, damaging the devices

This is the way I intend to drag things - the "PCs as furniture" bit is already done, as is issuing classroom cameras.

We bought 50 of them from Argos of all places when they had them on offer for £85! They've been bullet proof and there is an official update to 8.0 and a semi official rom available to bring them up to android 9.

 

We use an app that requires a Qualcomm processor.
