Adobe Reader vs Edge

Are people still deploying Adobe Reader for PDFs, or just using Edge?

 

Just trying to cut out another bit of software that needs updating.

Reader all the way, we keep having problems with Edge printing PDFs on and off and Reader has worked flawlessly

Edge doesn't give access to the system print dialogue, so we haven't been able to use it - users cant enter the copier code into the driver. Otherwise we probably wouldn't bother with adobe.

Adobe Reader because if people print PDFs from Edge it seems to 'crash' the copiers here it doesn't bring up the user code box. I have to restart the print spooler. Also happens when printing photos so must be a Windows 10 apps issue. Hoping its resolved in 1903.

Edge doesn't read PDFs at all, just gives an error page.

its as far as i can tell a modern apps thing. They dont use the full windows print engine (for want of a better term) they use some cut down pos that as others have stated if you have a copier with codes is a nightmare as it just kills the print queue for everyone. Im assuming at this point ms dont intent to change this functionality as its been present in every version of windows 10 i assume its just the way modern apps work and not a bug

I was using the one in Edge for a while, then stopped and went back to foxit, I cant remember why

Some forms that our exams officer gets sent don't load in all of the content if opened in Chrome or Edge.

Edge is our default but we push out Adobe Reader which people can switch to. Mainly due to printing dialog box. Why Microsoft can't just provide a link to the system one like Chrome I don't know.

Adobe reader (or sometimes chrome) for us. Although windows 10 keeps switching the default back to edge.

Reader, as we use electronic signatures in PDF forms for HR stuff.

if its still a modern app it wont fix the printing issue though anyway

Plan C - Foxit Reader. Haven't used Adobe Reader for 10 years.

Edge borks PDFs in particular and printing (all file types) in general. It gets hidden on my installs.

 

Chrome is less bad, but separate PDF reader still seems necessary.

Unless you live in a magical land without XFA-based forms, you need Reader. Nothing else works.

 

And if you didn't already know, you can deploy Reader with all the cloud services disabled.

Reader also has a dark mode, so it must be cool!

Printing from modern apps has been broken since Windows 8 so yeah very much doubt Microsoft intend to do anything about it. I pushed out a default file associations XML but people still manage to print from Edge somehow so both Edge and Photos are blocked using Applocker now. Havent had any issues since.

We deploy Reader DC on the PCs. I have the full Adobe suite on mine (apparently this is a perk for being in IT ) but I use Evince - it's the second fastest pdf reader I know off. xpdf is faster but it's a pain to get running on Windows.

We fell foul of this, past papers for mocks were printed and they looked perfect if you skimmed the paper but when you looked closer formulas were missing on maths papers. That was fun because obviously we got called to take a look and worked out if you print in Chrome it doesn't print properly but using Acrobat everything prints fine. This got noticed after hundreds of papers were printed and the kids were sitting doing their mocks with missing maths formulas and equations ! ha!

Ouch! It was a lot more obvious for us because the page was empty in IE apart from an error message. Opened it in Reader DC and suddenly a complex form appeared.

 

Staff get confused easily when it comes to handling PDFs, since Chrome, Edge, IE and Acrobat Reader will variously appear as the handler depending on how the PDF gets opened, browser preferences, etc.

Edge is default although Reader also deployed. Some problems with Reader which are fixed by switching to Edge.

Well, it looks like I'm going to have to install Reader still, then .

 

Time to refamiliarise myself with the customization tool...
