FragglePete Posted November 5, 2018 Posted November 5, 2018 Afternoon, Just been handed a rather fancy looking pack from our History teachers which is a copy of the new Peter Jackson's - They Shall Not Grow Old - which has been given to all schools in the UK in preparation of marking the 100th Anniversary this week. USB stick included has a whole load of Powerpoint, worksheets, etc - really nice stuff. Included is the DVD copy - but it just won't work on any of our PCs. We're running VLC for DVD playback but this just crashes. I've tried a few other software players and the same results occur. I just dusted off an ancient DVD/VHS player and it works ok in that! Anybody else got this and got it running ? They want to use this for assemblies starting tomorrow and right now I'm stumped. Pete
hardtailstar Posted November 5, 2018 Posted November 5, 2018 Not sure if we have had one of those but it sounds like they made the dvd just for dvd players if it works on the dvd player but not computers.
strawberry Posted November 5, 2018 Posted November 5, 2018 Had similar, opened the DVD and could get the certificate screen but that was it.
FragglePete Posted November 5, 2018 Author Posted November 5, 2018 Ok - pleased it not just me, and I applaud the need to get this into schools but what complete c**k up this is going to be then! How many schools have DVD Players left onsite - we've thrown out pretty much all of ours. Teachers want to pick out a 15 minute clip to show to each year group in assembly. Going to be a bit 'old skool' cue-ing up a particular section on the DVD player, swapping over the video input on the projector and pressing play! Arrrrggggg! Pete
FragglePete Posted November 5, 2018 Author Posted November 5, 2018 Hmmm.... just hooked up an old USB DVD Player to a iMac - and the built in DVD Player works! So, that's something I guess - it's a start. Pete
theeggmaster Posted November 5, 2018 Posted November 5, 2018 Our copy has failed to play on two computers, but managed to play on the one in the Auditorium. Our teachers want to make copies, which it doesn't look like we can do.
FragglePete Posted November 5, 2018 Author Posted November 5, 2018 Well, it worked on the iMac with an old USB DVD player...... so....... nope, I'll stop there. Pete
Arthur Posted November 5, 2018 Posted November 5, 2018 Sounds like a missing CODEC. VLC (and MPC-HC/BE) has all of the CODECs built in though?
mullet_man Posted November 5, 2018 Posted November 5, 2018 We got a copy of it too and I couldn't get it working on the two PCs I tried. It recognised it was a DVD but just wouldn't play it.
round2it Posted November 5, 2018 Posted November 5, 2018 not the same but i had to update vlc to the latedt to play a new copy protected dvd the other day.
ROB Posted November 6, 2018 Posted November 6, 2018 Same issue here, updated vlc and still no success. does not work with ms media player either.
crdacosta Posted November 6, 2018 Posted November 6, 2018 This will be broadcast on BBC 2 on Sunday 11-11-2018 https://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/proginfo/2018/46/they-shall-not-grow-old 2

G00G00MUCK Posted November 6, 2018 Posted November 6, 2018 (edited) In cinemas from 16th October, broadcast on BBC2 this coming remembrance Sunday. https://www.iwm.org.uk/events/peter-jackson-they-shall-not-grow-old We are having major problems playing the DVD as well. W10 with VLC and others will not play it. Browsing the DVD is difficult and apparently the DVD contains 400GB of data? Plays fine on W7 Windows Media Player. Edited November 6, 2018 by G00G00MUCK
bigal06 Posted November 6, 2018 Posted November 6, 2018 Been messing with this for a couple of days now. Tried various DVD players and it just wont work on Windows 10. Works on Windows 7 Media Player but of course that is not available in Windows 10. Works in PotPlayer on Windows 7 but not in Windows 10. Wont work on VLC on Windows 7 or 10.
LeMarchand Posted November 6, 2018 Posted November 6, 2018 Has anyone tried one of the codec packs like Shark007 or CCCP on W10? Not got the DVD to check.
G00G00MUCK Posted November 6, 2018 Posted November 6, 2018 When you browse the DVD you will see about 400 VOB files each 1GB in size (apparently). Either someone screwed up the image when burning these DVDs, or the copyright protection on them is way too aggressive.
Arthur Posted November 6, 2018 Posted November 6, 2018 This will be broadcast on BBC 2 on Sunday 11-11-2018 It seems like it's going to be far less hassle recording the programme from the TV than getting the DVD to play.

Either someone screwed up the image when burning these DVDs, or the copyright protection on them is way too aggressive. Thinking about it, I have a vague memory of a primitive form of copyright protection misreporting file sizes so that the disk would appear "too big" to copy. Anyone with lots of spare space tried ripping the disk to ISO and then playing the ISO?

AnyDVD or DVDFab Passkey Lite will tell you which type of copy protection the DVD uses. It's probably Sony's ARccOS (or similar). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARccOS_protection ARccOS (Advanced Regional Copy Control Operating Solution) is a copy-protection system made by Sony that is used on some DVDs. Designed as an additional layer to be used in conjunction with Content Scramble System (CSS), the system deliberately creates corrupted sectors on the DVD, which cause copying software to produce errors. The corrupted sectors are in areas of the disk that most DVD players do not access, but most copying software does. Despite being promoted as "fully compatible with available DVD players and drives," some DVDs with ARccOS cannot be played on some DVD players
ROB Posted November 7, 2018 Posted November 7, 2018 I have contacted 14-18Now via email and will let you know their response when it arrives. 2
ROB Posted November 7, 2018 Posted November 7, 2018 They have forwarded my email to the learning team in the meantime they say "Registered teachers on Tes.com will be able to view the film online until Christmas 2018 via the following link: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resources/first-world-war/" 2
