chazzy2501 Posted October 31, 2018 Posted October 31, 2018 I need a budget server that can accommodate 6+ hard drives to run a windows share. I already have the drives. CPU and RAM don't matter (as long as it can run server 2016) This is only going to be a share target for another server. I'll use the server tools to create a software raid. I'll probably run an £30 SSD or 2 for the OS. the old ml150s could do this but the new ones are too small and don't have the sata/power connections. otherwise I might look at a sinology box but I don't like proprietary systems (when things go wrong, a windows box can be troubleshooted).

They have some pretty good value bits for simple setups, I used them once, quite a few year ago, for a quick HyperV sertup i needed to do. You can usually get tower servers for around £700 if you already have the other bits

We bought a DL380 Gen 8 from @ICTDirect_Dave this year, filled it up with some 2TB SATA drives and a pair of Samsung SSDs for the OS and are using it as a CCTV NVR without any issues. 1
chazzy2501 Posted November 1, 2018 Author Posted November 1, 2018 I already have a old ML350 G6 with 8 2.5bays but when I put my drives in it would constantly tell me that they were overheating (they were not) and would take them offline or slow them down. I learned on forums that this "bug" was HPs way of making you buy their drives. Can you put off the shelf non-hp drives into an hp server now?

Can I just buy a load of SATA SSDs and plug them in? You certainly can. However the P410i on HP G7 machines will only run SATA devices at SATA 2 Speeds - SAS drives run at 6G however. You need a Gen 8 to take advantage of the P420 with SATA speeds at 6G.

If you have the 3.5" version, you'll need a caddy to go inside the server caddy, but that's easy enough, and cheap enough (about £4) to sort. Gen 8 Machines like a whine if you use non HP memory and drives, but everything works okay. They're very particular about the HDD Caddies however, they have to be the correct HP ones, but we buy those by the thousand so it's all good. Can vouch for the quality of the kit Dave provides - and prices too! He's even not too bad to deal with! Glowing Words!
