Dos_Box Posted March 14, 2018 Posted March 14, 2018 Very sad news indeed There are very few academics who could be considered iconic.
Popular Post 3s-gtech Posted March 14, 2018 Popular Post Posted March 14, 2018 What an amazing man. To live so long with MND, and to achieve so much, while still keeping a sense of humour, is inspirational. The world just got several percentage points dumber with his passing. 9
elsiegee40 Posted March 14, 2018 Posted March 14, 2018 An extraordinary man for both his science and his perseverance and determination through his disability. A sad, sad loss.
River Posted March 14, 2018 Posted March 14, 2018 Sad news, such a great mind. Made me resolve to read (not just attempt to!) my copy of Brief History of Time
Davit2005 Posted March 14, 2018 Posted March 14, 2018 (edited) Such an inner strength and personality, will be sorely missed :-( . Edited March 14, 2018 by Davit2005
Popular Post elsiegee40 Posted March 14, 2018 Popular Post Posted March 14, 2018 (edited) This quote of his is doing the rounds on social media Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious. And however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. It matters that you don't just give up. Edited March 14, 2018 by elsiegee40 6
jdoyle Posted March 14, 2018 Posted March 14, 2018 I was going to raise a glass in honour of his life but perhaps raising Ein Stein would be more fitting. RIP
HarryMonkey Posted March 14, 2018 Posted March 14, 2018 I find myself with this enormous sense of personal loss even though I never new him. A huge mind and an indomitable spirit. RIP Professor
witch Posted March 14, 2018 Posted March 14, 2018 Yes, me too. He did a lot for science, and was such a light-hearted man. I love the fact that he was on so many TV programs from The Simpsons to Big Bang and he really seemed to enjoy himself. A real ambassador for science, and indeed the UK as well
ICTDirect_Dave Posted March 14, 2018 Posted March 14, 2018 Oddly enough, for once at the passing of someone important (Terry Pratchett for example), I'm not sad. Every day since his diagnosis has been a gift and he lived the fullest life possible. His influence, inspiration (and humour) will remain for many years to come. The most influential scientist since Einstein? I doubt he would have accepted such an accolade, and that typifies the man. Good innings sir! 4

I suppose so, considering he was given 2 years to live in 1963, to make it anywhere near 2018 is incredible. Still a very sad day for science.
RichCowell Posted March 14, 2018 Posted March 14, 2018 Very sad news, and a huge loss to the world... Also sad, but unsurprising, that most obituaries overlook his huge contribution as a campaigner for progressive causes. Hopefully this is allowed here - apologies if not: If you want to commemorate his departure, please consider giving to his campaign to seek a judicial review against the UK government's planned privatisation of healthcare. https://www.crowdjustice.com/case/jr4nhs-round3
speckytecky Posted March 14, 2018 Posted March 14, 2018 What a wonderful man. Such an inspiration. A few years ago I asked my local MP why he had never received a Knighthood or Peerage - her reply wasn't worth the ink on the letter she sent me back. Something along the lines of the CH CBE FRS FRSA he had been awarded or appointed to during his lifetime were much higher recognition.

I'd read that he had been offered a knighthood a few years ago, but turned it down over the government's poor funding for science. 1
Arthur Posted April 3, 2018 Posted April 3, 2018 What a lovely gesture. Stephen Hawking arranged free three-course meal for 50 homeless people on the day of his funeral Professor Stephen Hawking arranged for 50 homeless people to enjoy a three-course Easter meal in Cambridge on the day of his funeral. The world-famous physicist’s parting gift was handed out at a church on the day of his funeral as a touching note told the guests the three-course meal was a “gift from Stephen”. https://twitter.com/AlexCollisCam/status/980093263054036992 1
6Foot2 Posted March 12, 2019 Author Posted March 12, 2019 Link: Prof Stephen Hawking commemorated on new 50p coin [bBC News] Prof Stephen Hawking has been honoured on a new 50p coin inspired by his pioneering work on black holes. The physicist died last year at the age of 76, having become one of the most renowned leaders in his field. He joins an elite group of scientists to have appeared on coins, including Sir Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin. Designer Edwina Ellis said: "I wanted to fit a big black hole on the tiny coin and wish he was still here chortling at the thought."... 2
