vitalstatistix Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 Agree with Krudler. Excellent work my friend. The fact that you have come up with a fix for the save issue before our exams start (Monday) is fantastic. as a side note, I did get a crash earlier when testing, that you might want to know about. When opening the software, clicking previous versions, and selecting a previous version to load (I was testing what would happen if we had a power cut), loading a doc from the previous version then seemed to cause the software to crash when I hit the print button, as if it was confused that I didn't have a proper document open... not sure if you can replicate that issue your end? THANKS! Jake
ass17 Posted May 12, 2016 Author Posted May 12, 2016 My friend, you are a legend. I never post on forums and things (as you will most likely tell from my info) but you sir deserve my gratitude. This is the first year we're doing exams at my place and picking apart Office is more trouble than it's worth so you've saved me a lot of messing about. FYI: If I change the font colour value in the config file it doesn't appear to apply. I don't need to do it but I just like poking around with the values in configs and things! The character map also appears behind the app now it is forced above all other windows and the print dialog is stuck behind too. What colour reference did you use in the config for the font? Just want to check that you used an RGB reference only.
krudler Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 What colour reference did you use in the config for the font? Just want to check that you used an RGB reference only. I used 0,0,0 for the background and 255,255,255 for the font (invert the b&w essentially). I also tried a bunch of other random values between 0 and 255 for each but still the font stayed black.

I have kind of fixed the top most that when the charmap window appears the topmost is false and when the form is activated again it sets it back top most. But the print dialog always stays on top so not sure what is happening there....
ass17 Posted May 12, 2016 Author Posted May 12, 2016 version 1.9.7 is now below ExamWritePad197.zip 1

When clicking print from the main window, the candidate info window appears and details can be entered but when clicking print from there, the standard print dialog then appears behind the main window. I can move it out by alt+tabbing to it and alt+space to move it with the keys on a multi-monitor setup but if I have no other monitor... no dice! I am using Win 8.1 x64 if that makes any difference. Cheers for the quick work btw. I shall certainly push ExamWritePad to my various associates in other schools. [EDIT] Print dialog seems to appear fine on top in Windows 10, just my Windows 8.1. Have tried on multiple comps. Edited May 12, 2016 by krudler

Have tried on multiple comps. The natural occurance of a ShowDialog() is "supposed" to be topmost of its owner form, so I'm not sure I can do anything about it. It work ok for me also on Windows 7 64bit and Windows 10 64bit. I dont intend testing it on 8.1 because I feel that most people in schools will be either 7 or 10, and I don't have access to 8 or 8.1 either, so my hands are tied really, sorry. :-(

With 0 it is fine. This happens on Windows 10 and 8.1
vitalstatistix Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 Ahh but we need the double line spacing option for Monday!
angrycomputingteacher Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 I ran it for a minute or two but it opens Windows SmartGlass or whatever it's called. Note sure if it's just me

With 0 it is fine. This happens on Windows 10 and 8.1 Ok I see, I should have asked which method you were using. I'll take a look tomorrow. Please remember that double line spacing is not enforced, optional but not required, by boards within JCQ. I'll see what I can do as it uses a different print method for double line spacing using the web browser control with CSS styling.
ass17 Posted May 13, 2016 Author Posted May 13, 2016 Here you go folks, version 1.9.8 and I have sorted out the printing issues with double line spacing, the dialog box appears!! I had also found an issue that when you open either Candidate info, Screen Options or Previous Version Windows, the textbox is still active and can be typed on, so now the whole main form is disabled until the either window is closed. This also help to keep focus on the window and stops it from dropping behind the main window. Enjoy!! ExamWritePad198.zip
ass17 Posted May 13, 2016 Author Posted May 13, 2016 I'm hoping that by version 2 it will be perfect for everyone, version 2 is not yet in development and I can only foresee from version 1.9.8 to 2 would be only bug fixes. But I'm all up for new features!! 1

MkII Posted May 13, 2016 Posted May 13, 2016 Great work ass17 Suggestion: on the Screen Options callout... I think the confirmation button should read "ok" rather than Exit? Also... you should say in the OP that the latest version is in your last post

I agree that this topic will become so big that I agree to get the latest version what I will do edit the first post and always attached the latest version if possible [emoji106]🏻 1
pslater Posted May 13, 2016 Posted May 13, 2016 Hi, Good little programme this, thanks for sharing. Is there any chance you could add Bold/Italics/Underline options? Possibly text colour options too so that the text can have multiple colours throughout the document? Our school often asks students who have extra time to change the colour of the text when their extra time begins. You should also consider creating a website to document changes and have a features guide.

As it was the easiest way to share something with fellow school techies... I will certainly look into it once the product has reached a stable version, which is probably this current one. Realistically I only want to create something that sits in between Notepad and Wordpad that follows the guidence from JCQ and/or other Exam Boards/Groups. BUT, here is the but, I could create a config option to turn on additional formatting options as you suggest in future. With doing this means I would have to move away from the TextBox control to a RichEdit control, so im not sure how the rest of the code would handle this change but I will investigate. :-)

A config option might be the best way anyway so you can customise the programme for different uses. Thanks again and I look forward to your future updates

If its winforms take a look at this https://github.com/jacobslusser/ScintillaNET it might be an easier option for giving more control to the word editing side of things.

Win forms, not done anything with WPF as yet. Will take a look at your suggestion, thanks
