speckytecky Posted January 15, 2018 Posted January 15, 2018 I'm a treasurer for three separate organisations. The constitutions of each are very restrictive in that for payments out two signatures are required - one being the treasurer unless unavoidable. I think that's going to need to change as we move forward. I also receive a lot of payments from the membership as cheques. Our problem going forward is the fact that so many bank branches are closing. A friend who is a treasurer of a cricket club told me recently that in his pretty busy and bustling Garrison town both HSBC and Nat west have recently closed their branches. As his club banks with HSBC he now needs to arrange for the bar takings etc to be deposited by someone visiting one of the two towns circa 20 miles away.
DalekSec Posted January 15, 2018 Posted January 15, 2018 Never had a cheque book, never written a cheque!
matt40k Posted January 15, 2018 Posted January 15, 2018 I never know what numbers to collect to do that securely. Get a Monzo account - ideal for splitting bills. You can split it from within the app then send out friendly PAY ME messages - https://monzo.com/blog/2017/02/22/1-9-3-update/

Similar experience here - I've recently stepped down as secretary of one organisation which needed two signatures (ironically I had only just been added to the list!) and I am on another committee which needs two signatories. A lot of payments will have to be done online in the future but how can this be easily authenticated so (for example) our treasurer doesn't empty the account? Last received a cheque at Christmas, then again my (generous) grandmother gave other grandkids £50 notes instead!

I believe money for HSBC accounts can be paid in at the Post Office. That's what I was told by First Direct when I rang and moaned my local branch had been closed. Might be worth a check to save the drive. 1

I can pay in to my personal HSBC accounts at the post office, not sure if the same applies to business accounts though.
psydii Posted January 15, 2018 Posted January 15, 2018 Clearing out just before Christmas I found my cheque book. It was at the bottom of a waste paper basket in the back of a cupboard, under the stairs behind a sign reading "Beware of the Leopard". Last cheque stub dated 2004, and the one before that 1999. (it really was in a bin at the back of a a cupboard!)

Years ago, I used to be able to pay cheques into the account for my Girl Guide unit at the post office. We banked at Lloyds. I can also do this for our Barclays current account.

Same as for business... you have a two login payment release system. Treasurer/bursar sets up the payments from their account and has no permission to release payment. Chairman/Headteacher/Other authorised official logs in to their account, which cannot setup payment, and reviews payments before releasing them. Edited January 15, 2018 by elsiegee40

simonw Posted January 15, 2018 Posted January 15, 2018 I happen to have written a cheque today, entry for an archery tournament.
HTCPCP Posted January 15, 2018 Posted January 15, 2018 for it me it's Written - well Nationwide insisted I send them back my cheque book after writing 1 cheque in 7 years and that was 4 years ago Recieved - I get paid for part time work at a charity in cheque form, as they currently only have BACS payment for the 4 full time members of staff, but that is set to change very soon! Can't wait for that one to happen.

Can't wait for that one to happen. We used to have fun with BACS payment here, when we'd expanded a bit and added a few more staff we went over the daily BACS payment limit on our account so had to split the wages into two days. Unfortunately it was random which day you got.
mavhc Posted January 15, 2018 Posted January 15, 2018 I received 3 cheques last year, Barclaycard, DVLA, and from someone's estate/will. As the last one was worth >£10 I signed up for Barclays' deposit cheque with photo on phone thing.
DJ-1701 Posted January 15, 2018 Posted January 15, 2018 Last time I wrote a cheque, was 3 and a half years ago. It was to change the ownership information for my dog which all had to be done via the post and required a cheque. I then also shredded it as I found out they did take card payments. I believe I have only used my cheque book 5 times in total... I know in error one of my parents tried to use it once as well, thinking it was theirs... luckily they realised their mistake when writing it... glad they did, as banks don't seem to be very good at checking signatures...
john Posted January 15, 2018 Posted January 15, 2018 I write a cheque at least every 6 months as my dentist is cash or cheque only. Receiving, I've had a few from HMRC in the past they don't like BACS for giving money away....
Engeloid Posted January 15, 2018 Posted January 15, 2018 Both my Dad and my in-laws use cheques as a way of giving money as a gift, so I get a cheque every Christmas. I think I've lost my cheque book though - I've not written one in years!
tg12 Posted January 15, 2018 Posted January 15, 2018 Last received a cheque a couple of months ago from a friend paying me back for various things. Last written one was probably many years ago when I paid for driving lessons with them. Believe it or not, but I actually have a left handed cheque book!
Syman_a Posted January 15, 2018 Posted January 15, 2018 i dont think i have written a cheque for over 10 years. Still get them from school for repayment of expenses on occasion.
p858snake Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 I submitted a form in our SAP system last week, so I will be getting a cheque in about ~week to cash for petty cash recoup.
MatthewL Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Receive cheques at Christmas without fail, have written about 16 in last 11 years, mainly subs which have only just moved to bank transfer. Received probably 50 in that time for various things.
mavhc Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Problem is consumers don't get charged for cheque or cash banking, so they don't realise how expensive it is. I just bank transfer everything
