LeMarchand Posted July 21, 2017 Posted July 21, 2017 Apparently suicide . Chester Bennington: Linkin Park vocalist 'took his own life' - BBC News
Dos_Box Posted July 21, 2017 Posted July 21, 2017 Very sad, I get the impression it's very lonely at the top.
foofighterjim Posted July 21, 2017 Posted July 21, 2017 Very sad indeed; you would be hard pushed to find many people my age that don't or hasn't owned a copy of Hybrid Theory. He had been in the news recently criticising some fans for being stuck in the past regarding Linkin Parks sound. Looking at this he was obviously having a difficult time and I don't think you can underestimate the loss of Chris Cornell to him, they were apparently very good friends.
abillybob Posted July 21, 2017 Posted July 21, 2017 Had 6 young children and a wife. The only people suffering now are them he took the easy, selfish and cowardly way out, I used to like him. My respect has diminished for him.

Please read in to what depression is and what it does, as someone who's had to deal with it and the thoughts that go with it. It's a mental illness, you see yourself as a burden on everyone and you going would make it easier for everyone else. So he would be thinking his 6 kids want him gone and he's a burden on them. Or he's not a good father. Depression isn't a joke and suicide isnt cowardly, it is the complete opposite, it took me years to snap out of mine, and every so often the thoughts come back and people saying stuff like this doesn't help it does the complete opposite Edited July 21, 2017 by DalekSec 15

But maybe his frequent drug abuse had something to do with this...

bennz Posted July 21, 2017 Posted July 21, 2017 unless you have had to deal with mental illness you should keep comments like that to yourself, very sad news.

DJ-1701 Posted July 21, 2017 Posted July 21, 2017 Understood. But maybe his frequent drug abuse had something to do with this... It could easierly be that the drug abuse was due to his depression, trying to self medicate, to get that high... either way it's no use any one armchair analysing the chicken and the egg or assigning blame, a life has been lost and has devistated others. The thing to learn from this is if we ever feel like this, we must talk to others, for we are all loved and would all be missed.
DeGrimmy Posted July 21, 2017 Posted July 21, 2017 I was never a fan of Linkin Park but it's very sad to see the news. Like Chris Cornell earlier this year, gone way too young. 1
localzuk Posted July 21, 2017 Posted July 21, 2017 Understood. But maybe his frequent drug abuse had something to do with this... Drug use is common among the depressed as it is used as a coping method, same with alcohol abuse. Both give a temporary reprieve, an escape from the pain. But they cause their own issues and longer term make things worse. You should see the drug abuse as a symptom of the depression rather than a cause. 2
abillybob Posted July 21, 2017 Posted July 21, 2017 Both give a temporary reprieve, an escape from the pain. But they cause their own issues and longer term make things worse. This is the issue. Even if it's true that he was using it to relieve the pain it's common knowledge to understand it would just make it worse. Speaking to people as much as possible and getting help is what you should focus on, doing everything in your power to get better and improve your own life style, changing your perspective on things and sorting yourself out is what you should do. I love how you all assume I and nobody close to me has ever gone through depression, I've been closer than you think and I understand the things you must do to help yourself, if you don't want to help yourself and see drugs as a way out then I have no sympathy for you. That's my stance.
Popular Post Garacesh Posted July 21, 2017 Popular Post Posted July 21, 2017 (edited) Had 6 young children and a wife. The only people suffering now are them he took the easy, selfish and cowardly way out, I used to like him. My respect has diminished for him. You don't see the suffering he endured, nor know for how long he endured it. You say suicide is the selfish option because it hurts other people. Would you expect somebody else to live a lifetime of pain so that you wouldn't feel any? Is that not selfish? The truth it depression is a terrible beast. It's ever-present and malicious and no matter how good things are, it will find a way to bring you down. Oftentimes nobody expects the people at the top to suffer. They have it all, what do they have to be depressed about? But consider the amount of high-profile suicides. Chester Bennington is the latest addition to a growing list. Chris Cornell. Robin Williams. Tony Scott. Bob Welch. Jeret Peterson. Depression fuels its own fire by often resulting in isolation, it's often exacerbated by (legal or otherwise) substance use as the depressed desperately scramble for some kind of escape. I know. I've been there. The scariest thing about depression though? Is that it's right. Depressive thoughts, to a depressed person, make absolute perfect sense. Chester Bennington was a terrible father and a terrible husband because he spent too much time on his music instead of his wife and kids. Chester Bennington was a failure because he resorted to substance use to escape his demons. Chester Bennington was talentless hack, and was simply riding on the coat-tails of his bandmates. Everybody whose life Chester Bennington had an impact on would be better off if he wasn't around. From my own experiences with depression, I would say these are things he would likely have thought repeatedly and often And to him, they would have made sense. They were right. It was all true. It's not selfishness that drives people to suicide. Suicidal people kill themselves because it's the right thing to do. We as outsiders can all look in and say that it's not true, it isn't the right thing to do, and his depression was clouding his judgement. We all know that to be true. But the depressed person doesn't see that, and it takes a lot more than an outside perspective to change how a depressed person thinks. I love how you all assume I and nobody close to me has ever gone through depression, I've been closer than you think and I understand the things you must do to help yourself, if you don't want to help yourself and see drugs as a way out then I have no sympathy for you. That's my stance. If you had any kind of serious experience with depression, your response to somebody killing themselves wouldn't be so callous and insensitive. Edited July 21, 2017 by Garacesh 12

Speaking to people as much as possible and getting help is what you should focus on, doing everything in your power to get better and improve your own life style, changing your perspective on things and sorting yourself out is what you should do. The problem is, you are missing the key part of all this. You are not of sound mind when you are depressed. Logical thought is not something that comes naturally. Its fine saying all that, but a depressed person isn't thinking any of that. They are just under a cloud, unable to escape. @Garacesh is absolutely correct. The things running through your head when depressed are things like "I'm a failure, a fraud. I am a waste of everyone's time, it'd be better if I just wasn't in their way" etc... I know this because those are the thoughts I had when I was deep in depression. I still struggle with it now, and likely will do for quite some time to come. Every person has their own coping mechanism, and we can't judge them for it - we can't as we don't know what's going on in their head. Sometimes those coping mechanisms fail, and you end up with a suicide. Its awful, but its another symptom of depression. One thing to take away from this is that suicide in men is considerably higher than that of women. We still don't have a society which encourages men to be open about their problems. Pressure is placed on them to act and be a certain way, and if you don't, it can drag a man down. Edited July 21, 2017 by localzuk 2

Agreed, when i had it i didn't seek help as i just thought it they couldn't help me or they would think i'm making it up. It's a very lonely place to be in and you don't know what's going on in your own head. 1

Popular Post elsiegee40 Posted July 21, 2017 Popular Post Posted July 21, 2017 (edited) I too have been that total failure. The 'logic' telling me that nothing I did was right. Fortunately I was able to see in the end that I needed help... and got it. Sadly, for some depressed people they don't ever see that. "I'm just a failure. Seeing someone about it won't help". It's a cruel twist that you have to want to be helped to seek help, but this horrible illness won't let you want to be helped. And for anyone currently suffering from depression, I will draw their attention to free, self-referred NHS Online Mental Health Services which was stickied BTRD awhile ago. I doubt the guy wanted to do it when he was not in an episode, it's a real illness. Of course if the guy took drugs, it's going to make it worse, BUT, he was likely not thinking straight when he decided to take them, it's a circle of hell. edit: it's already been said but I will say it again.
