Because we are making sure that while we have the money now, we will be set for a good few years. Make hay while the sun shines and all that. Luckily my school has combated falling budgets by a steadily increasing roll number. We understand that not everyone is as lucky as us, but if OP has the budget, then why not buy the best?

 

If I had money and wanted to invest for the future, I'd go for more robust i5 models with more RAM rather than i7s. Seems to make more difference to performance. A good warranty is also valuable.

That's a catch22 question. If you buy a high spec laptop that is affordable now, will it be affordable in 3, 5 or however many years time. It's all about expectation.

 

We don't buy laptops, but we say the same thing for ipads to our primaries. Yes you have the money to buy 32 ipads now, but remember in 3 years time you will need the money to replace them. A lot of schools forget this scenario.

We buy i3's with SSD's and 8GB RAM and they are more than adequate for the vast majority of purposes - e.g. running SIMS, Office and so on. We have 5 and 6 year old i3s with 4GB ram and that have been updated with SSD's and they work fine.

 

We tend to buy HP Probooks (the model numbers change quite a bit ) and come it around £500. Having said all that we are trying to move away from laptops for staff!

I'm in the fortunate position where if I need something, I get it. The headteacher always insists I spend more money than I probably would by myself, because the money is there and we want it to last a good few years. Sometimes there's a substantial sum of money that needs to disappear by the end of March, though if that happens next year I think I'll struggle to use it as there's nothing we need!

We've just got some pricing on i5, ssd, 8gb Dells at 620 (single)

 

Trial units just arrived (3480 and 3580) Battery is under bottom screwed on panel, that's even if it's removable!

I've got loads of lovely laptops. :)

 

Staff laptop favourites currently seem to be Dell Latitude E6430 or HP Elitebook 8470p - Prices from £225 each!

I got Dell Vostro 14 5468, i3, 4GB ram, 128gb ssd, for £346.50 from Dell's education department, seem pretty robust, no cd drive, uses the new dell psu connector.

With big budget cuts, how can any school justify spending over £600 on a laptop!

 

High spec machine with 5 year warranty > cheap laptop worthless in 2 years

The Dell owners manual shows the battery is removable once the bottom cover has been removed.

Windows 7 Pro or Windows 10 Pro COA (Depending on if it has a license already or not)

 

£25 to double the RAM to 8GB

£45 for a new 120GB SSD

 

And the warranty?

2 Years Advance Replace (you tell me there's a problem, I'll ship parts / replacement to you and worry about getting the faulty stuff back when you're up and running again)

You can take it to 3 years for an additional £20

Was thinking i7 for future proofing as these would need to last some time... but happy to be corrected on this..

You're not going to see a noticeable improvement between the i5 and i7 for slt and the majority of users would use it for. Just speced an i3 256gb ssd and 8gb ram hp 250 laptop for 295 each but I know now they have since sold out and priced back on for 345

The i5 in the Surface Pro 4 is good enough for even heavy work (I use one). Get the SLT a 22" monitor if they need a big screen. All our SLT with Surfaces are very pleased with them. Otherwise, they can have a 14" Lenovo Thinkpad.

The thing with most teachers they praise things that they can see. You upgrade their switching to 10g switching across the whole network they still complain "network is shit and so slow" blah blah blah.

You buy them a shiny new 24 inch £150 monitor and suddenly the machine is far quicker and great. They claim they are being more productive and it is no longer holding them back. (Yes I have had that feedback from installing a new monitor)

My response: I'm glad we have achieved the level of service to suit your needs 👀 👍
