Homer3334 Posted March 18, 2017 Author Posted March 18, 2017 Some of these are brilliant, and made me extend my list to at least 15. Apple and flash being pretty high up now.
synaesthesia Posted March 18, 2017 Posted March 18, 2017 Oh, I'd like to add to my list. People that create a new server. For. Every. Single. Role. The IT equivalent of having a separate house for each member of your family regardless of age.
3s-gtech Posted March 18, 2017 Posted March 18, 2017 Oh, I'd like to add to my list. People that create a new server. For. Every. Single. Role. The IT equivalent of having a separate house for each member of your family regardless of age. That's me! I have an absurd number of VMs for the size of our school. I like it as I find it easier to maintain and manage, but it's probably not the most effective method. I do try to create slightly more general servers now (I once had one purely to host SecureAssess, but that was a foothold for building out VM infrastructure so no regrets! 1) Vandalism 2) Wilful ignorance from staff (I email out a notice and announce it in briefing, still gets ignored) 3) Pointless phone calls ("is the server down?" "No") 4) Wasted money ("I want a tablet!" - used once a year) 5) Secret IT issues that never get reported, but interfere with T&L. 2
FN-GM Posted March 18, 2017 Posted March 18, 2017 Might have to remove one of mine and change it to When users get kick off with you because the laptop tree stops producing devices
mukz Posted March 19, 2017 Posted March 19, 2017 1) All of the above! 2) staff who report something and then escalate to SLT that they reported it 2 weeks ago! ***** please! You never reported it until today! 3) being a kitchen till operator 4) expected to sort out staff and student personal mobiles/laptops/tablets 5) explaining the reason not to buy something, yet they buy it and expect one to manage it after.
Guest MD5T Posted March 19, 2017 Posted March 19, 2017 1. Printers / photocopiers 2. Apple related products, mostly iPads and iMacs 3. Rude staff. 4. Staff that moan to colleagues that something isn't working but they never report it to you. 5. Helping out teachers lastminute.com because they didn't plan properly.

This one really frustrates me! I'll ask them, was the request logged on our helpdesk? Did they email us? The answer is always 'No'. Thankfully we are lucky as our SLT are really supportive of us. They are probably the only ones in school who believe we actually do work, and not just sit in a office all day :S Can I borrow your Number 4 pls and replace my 2 and 3 with it Can we pretty please??
witch Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 1. People moaning but not telling me about any IT issues 2. Flash 3. Willful ignorance - watching them just waiting for you to do it for them 4. Getting no thanks when something that has obviously taken a lot of energy and commitment is finally sorted 5. Genee Boards
keyboards Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 1.People not asking for stuff in a reasonable time frame, ie two minute before assembly starts, can you setup the hall etc 2.Rude or unappreciative students/staff especially if you've got out your way for someone 3.I'm not a genius sometimes I won't be able to fix things in five minutes 4.People who assume as your IT you know everything IT, no I don't know how to something specific in some program I've never used 5.People who assume outside work or etc that I want to talk about IT etc, I'm not even really that much of a geek, or people who look amazed when I say I play sports at the weekend, go gym and enjoy the odds few beers and a curry, as though I should be sitting indoors playing runescape with all my free time
mikeprice Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 1) Things that go wrong and then just start working again even though I know I have done nothing to fix it - I just know it will happen again 2) People who say - Oh I just have all the rubbish computer stuff in here - no you haven't - it is the same as everyone else (often a bit better) - but you haven't told me about any of the problems so I haven't fixed them the same as everyone else!! 3) People complaining that none of the laptops work - well no they don't - but that's because when you used them this morning none of your kids put them on charge so their charge level is very low now!!!! 4) wifi complains - based on experience 2 years ago when it didn't work - it does now but will they try it again!!!!! 5) salespeople who assume that ringing the office every day for 4 weeks will be a good idea - if fact - just most salesmen in general (gender specific used deliberately!) - including those who think volume of words is the main thing that matters - hence ringing
AJWhite1970 Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 1. Teaching staff who view support staff as a lower life form 2. Staff who don't even say thank you when you bail them out of a massive hole on a Saturday evening 3. Staff who book laptop trolleys/ICT rooms and then don't use them 4. Site team staff who still think it's funny after all these years to turn off the lifts when I'm in one 5. Football players/coaches who should know better
BKGarry Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 1. Teaching staff who view support staff as a lower life form But if that doesn't happen we can't compare ourselves to these lovable guys
Lonix Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 1. Teaching staff who view support staff as a lower life form This doesn't happen though, I mean we're all treated as equals in education? Support staff are never treated poorly (as some teachers will have you think).....
Homer3334 Posted March 20, 2017 Author Posted March 20, 2017 Anyone ever had to get something set up for an assembly in 10 mins, which the whole assembly relies on, but it's going wrong and there are hundreds of children coming in.. Then the staff are saying to the kids "Hopefully IT man can get it working in time!". Then it goes quiet and everyone just waiting for you to sort it out so they can start. Woke up middle of night cold sweat with that one a few times
clockend25 Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 Plenty of times. Normally when it's an external presenter who needs all sort of access that can't be sorted quickly.
hardtailstar Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 1. Staff not reporting issues and complaining to SLT 2. Staff who demand we fix laptops but can never be bothered to bring their laptops because they are "too busy". 3. Office phrases like "touch base", "Drill down", "It’s on my radar", "Bring to the table", "Ping me" and so much more! 4. Staff that lie to make you look bad when its their fault 5. Staff not listening when something is not physically possible to do in 10 minutes even when you have tried to explain that it will take longer than 10 minutes and give then a time it will be done by. I could go on!!
caffrey Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 Just had something similar, Teacher decides to do a live vote Google Form in Assembly using iPads and wanted me there for support. Which led to me running around during trying to get devices onto wifi (certificate / 802.1x / accept and continue) Luckily there wasn't that many and the Unifi access point in there worked like a champ. so yeah 1) iPads / any wifi enabled device 2) Wifi 3) Printers 4) Constant knocking on the door due to 1-3 when I'm trying to concentrate on something 5) Lack of input for ICT projects (Am I supposed to read minds?)

Here we request that all assemblies and content to be shown is emailed before 11am on the day (assemblies are at 12:25 and 1pm), so far since bringing this in I havent had any of the last minute setups.
Joanne Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 1) My touch screen won't touch - go and plug in USB cable which is clearly labelled 'TOUCH'. 2) My screen won't come on - either plug in HDMI which is clearly labelled 'video and sound', or change channel on screen. 3) Please can you support my lesson? Yes, when is it? In 5 minutes. 4) When people continuously apologise for bothering me. Dude. This is my job. It's fine. 5) Printer needs toner. OK what colour? *shrug*
