cragos1984 Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 That time of year again time for mock exams! Has anyone managed to disable spellcheck for a single exam user yet in Word 2016 please? Our previous system for Word 2010 will no longer work.

3s-gtech Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 As above for us; it's worth going though all of these as it works pretty well, and stops students turning things back on too.
AJWhite1970 Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 Have you considered Exam WritePad that's being developed on here? We are using it for all WP exams with great success http://www.edugeek.net/forums/educational-software/167975-exam-writepad-alternative-wordpad-notepad-use-within-exams-22.html#post1552841 Andrew
Katy Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 Ooh will have to look at those settings, we just force them to use Wordpad which has no spell check and remove shortcuts to everything else and stop the EXEs running with the "Allowed Programs" setting
thimon Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 We did use Wordpad, but our Exam Office prefers Word and TBH so do we. Everyone is familiar with Word and it has auto-save just in case.
3s-gtech Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 We were told that we had to provide the same experience for the students in class and exams, so that they had as little change/disadvantage as possible. As we have Word 2016 across site, that's what they get in exams (obviously minus proofing ) 2
cragos1984 Posted March 21, 2017 Author Posted March 21, 2017 This all worked perfectly thanks guys 1
rama1712 Posted April 28, 2017 Posted April 28, 2017 I have tried the above solution and all seems to work except for F& and Shift shortcuts. It does not spellcheck as they type but if they press F7 it spell checks. I am so close to getting this to work and advice help pointers etc Stuart Purvis
thimon Posted April 28, 2017 Posted April 28, 2017 Hi @rama1712 It's all about disabling the shortcut keys, try and make sure you included them in your GPO, I listed the ones in my first post in this thread. https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc179143.aspx details which shortcut keys relate to which code, so code 118 relates to F7 spellcheck, disable that and you should be good.
rama1712 Posted April 29, 2017 Posted April 29, 2017 i have got the 118 and 118,4 in gpo but when I press the f7 key it still works. We are using office 2016 windows 7 64 Thanks Stuart
KarlGoddard Posted October 5, 2017 Posted October 5, 2017 Hi Just an addition to this thread... Does anyone know the Disable Command Code for the 'Formatting Consistency Check'? This is the wavy blue line when Word decrees that the structure of a sentence or paragraph doesn't reflect a standard format. eg if some typed in garbage such as kjhkjhkjhkh - it would prompt with a blue wavy line. I've found the option in Word 2013 > Options > Advanced > Keep track of formatting / Mark Formatting Inconsistencies . I just cant find the code anywhere!
jpbp200 Posted November 28, 2017 Posted November 28, 2017 Thanks very much for sharing that. Very helpful indeed.
keyboards Posted December 6, 2017 Posted December 6, 2017 We just replace/delete the files that do spell check and so forth, we didn't have enough time last year to setup a GP so quickly done that, we suggested Wordpad but got told no
matt_isda_bomb Posted January 5, 2018 Posted January 5, 2018 Hi all, i wrote an article detailing the steps a few years ago. I have updated the article for 2016. https://chronicbit.blogspot.co.uk/2018/01/disabling-proofing-tools-and-related.html I will also be adapting a batch file for a quick enable disable for stand alone laptops. Thanks 3
ITGURU Posted November 21, 2018 Posted November 21, 2018 sorry to bring up an old thread. i've applied all the settings as above which seem to work (spelling check greyed out) f7 doesnt work , but the users can still right click and be prompted with suggestions. I have enabled 'do not enable additional actions in the right-click menu'
tri_94 Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 sorry to bring up an old thread. i've applied all the settings as above which seem to work (spelling check greyed out) f7 doesnt work , but the users can still right click and be prompted with suggestions. I have enabled 'do not enable additional actions in the right-click menu' I have the same problem it underlines in red and they can right click like you said. Anyone any ideas? Thanks
FishCustard Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 We just used WordPad for exams - gets around the issue entirely.
tri_94 Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 We used too but now like others they would like to use word
MrLudwig Posted February 4, 2019 Posted February 4, 2019 We set Deny permissions on a DLL component of the Office spell checker for our Exam user group. This seems to work pretty well. Disables the manual spell check, the red underlining and suggestions. If they try and run a spell check via the Ribbon or F7, they get the standard "Spelling and grammar check is complete", but no checks are actually performed. The DLL files are: Office 2010 - %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office\Office14\PROOF\MSSP7EN.DLL Office 2016 - %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office\Office16\PROOF\msspell7.dll Haven't tried this in Office 2013 or Office 2019, but I'd imagine it will work the same, although the specific dll may have changed, and the path of course. We set the deny permission on this file via GPO. This doesn't disable the "Replace as you type" autocorrect feature, but the standard MS Office GPO Templates and Disable UI controls mentioned above can mop up these little bits. 1
tri_94 Posted February 11, 2019 Posted February 11, 2019 Does anyone know how to disable Synonyms via either gpo or reg key? Thanks
FishCustard Posted February 11, 2019 Posted February 11, 2019 We used too but now like others they would like to use word Why do they want to use Word? What features do they need? It's all very well saying "we want X program", but then asking to lobotomise it and take out half its features doesn't seem reasonable!

I agree with you mostly because a: students know to use it and b: It’s easier for headers and footers Thanks
